Saw an update on Total Rugby -
sounds like an entertaining concept - cant see how the footballers will play without proper condition and some specialist training - there must be some reduced rules or something!

It's got to be touch rugby, there's no way a football club would allow their valuable assets to risk injury playing full contact!

Pats right. The potential for serious injury is huge, unless Toulon field their u14s

That's what I was thinking Pat. It will probably be 2nd string for both teams.
But its an unfair comparison if both sides don't play the correct rules.
The only time I have seen 2 different sports played together is the old League vs Union (Bath v Wigan) combo matches. They were cracking to watch but at least the 2 games had the same physicality.
The Rugby half of the match would have to be tag rules, uncontested scrums etc.
The Wendyball half would probably just be normal rules.

Perhaps this a 7's format rugby match.
No specialist front row required then. Tackles are hard but there isn't much big rucking or mauling as in 15's. Think that a few of the more robust footballers could cope with that.

It works with similar sports like that propdavid, I know it's also done regularly with shinty/hurling and gaelic football/aussie rules. Rugby and football are obviously much more different. The football half will probably be backs only for Toulon.
Just a thought though, is the 12th of July France's equivalent of the 1st of April or something?

I don't know, I reckon any lock should be likely to start in goal.

I'd imagine Wilkinson would be quite handy when it came to taking free kicks. Especially going by that old advert of him & Beckham.

As long as the rugby was in the first half. Soften up those wendyballers, make the second half a much easier prospect.

Those inter-sports-games are always fun to watch. I've always wanted to see a half NFL-half rugby match. Lions or All blacks or Boks (might be physical enough) vs a franchise

Some rugby players will have been excellent footballers as kids like Danny Care. Same will apply to some footballers who will have played rugby as kids

Care, Cips, Wilkinson all had very promising starts in football.

Re: Toulon will play soccer giants Olympique Marseille in a friendly match next Wednesday. Half rugby, half football!
I know we were hardly Toulon and Marseille but we used to have a charity match at school each year where the 1st XV lads played the 1st XI+4 girls at hockey and rugby. I can't remember all the rules but basically the girls could do anything we wanted but the boys were not allowed to run with the ball, they had to scrum and lineout on their knees and they weren't allowed to tackle in the rugby match.
For the record both games ended in honourable draws. We scored a great try and the lads responded by catching one of the girls and carrying her and the ball across the try line.
We were really annoyed that the lads found it so easy to play hockey!!

We used to play the girls at Netball. And win. Did it at Uni this year too in a netball tournament between the sports clubs in which the final saw the rugby team beat he netball firsts

My god, this is dreadful reading. Another sad example of women seeking to humiliate the males of the species and get them down on their knees. And institutionalised in the schools, no less! The end is nigh my friends unless we, as men, stand up for ourselves (especially if we say please and take out the rubbish first).MrsP wrote:they had to scrum and lineout on their knees and they weren't allowed to tackle in the rugby match.
I would have thought everyone would have enjoyed the tackling bit........

That must have caused a bit of consternation CJ.
Truth be told the only reason the lads didn't beat us at hockey was that they didn't understand the rules. This was back in the day when the "obstruction" rule in hockey was pretty complex ie. it was very very easy to penalise someone.

It did a bit especially as the netball team had a pretty successful season! But a 6-10 second row is pretty useful in a gamevin which the defence can't come within 1m!

Also makes it far easier to score when you can almosr just drop the ball in the net. A bloke at work, 6ft5, took part in a charity natch the other week vrs an u18s team and said he basically just hand to stand still, catch the ball and pop it in the net. I guess if in rugby there is no substitute for speed, in netball there is no substitute for height

The concept would be good but the game itself would be aboslutely shoite.

Kiwis bending the rules.
In pro netball match earlier this year one of the kiwi teams lifted the defender to intercept a shoot. Only done once and no other teams has tried it but it is perfectly legal.

I bet there was a fair bit of complaining/back patting about that, depending on which side you back.

What was the outcome?
I've always wanted the Scotland rugby team and football team to play each other in a half of each sport. Overall winner gets all the governement funding of the other!

Cantona taking a conversion at the end and hitting the cross bar dead centre showed skill and a sense of the fun of the occasion.
Looks like a great way to get the fans of both clubs to enjoy a fun day out...
Take note Ospreys and Swansea FC
