Re: Happy 32nd Birthday to Roger Federer!
I'd just like to point out that Federer isn't the only player who has birthdays, in fact I think all the top players have at least one a year. As the BBC documentary on Andy Murray showed, Andy has had one every year of his life according to Judy.
Well done to Roger but a bit of balance was needed on this thread.

Re: Happy 32nd Birthday to Roger Federer!
I can see your point bb, and I think the wording of the title could be seen as a bit of a controversial issue. Too narrow perhaps, and as such leaving little room for open debate.
The thread might have been better called something like "Congratulations to all those celebrating their 32nd birthday today, including multi-slam winning tennis players from Switzerland, and indeed any other touring pros who will be celebrating a birthday at some point within the next 12 months ...... "

I bet he is celebrating it too, the arrogant swine.
Probably wearing a jacket embroidered with '32' and telling noisy party guests to "be quiet".
Maybe telling the other competitors in Musical Statues that they "f***ing stopped" and shouting "don't tell me the f***ing rules" when explained that this is in fact the point of the game.
Perhaps claiming that the youngster who pinned the tail on the donkey just hit a lucky shot.
Awful man.

Re: Happy 32nd Birthday to Roger Federer!
I was going to complain about why only Federer gets a "fangirl" birthday thread. But then I remembered that it is a special privilege only granted to holders of at least 17 slams who are still playing at the grand old age of 32.
In celebration here is my favorite recent picture of Roger

It was Marinko Matosevic's birthday yesterday too. His present is another chance to knock over Rafa's water bottles.

Re: Happy 32nd Birthday to Roger Federer!
Im very concerned about the ops clear bias on this thread. Two of Rogers well earned birthdays have been asterisked off for being part of a weak era for birthdays. Noone else during that period was good enough to have birthdays apparently...

Re: Happy 32nd Birthday to Roger Federer!
Ah yes ........ Roger Federer.......
I can just about remember when - on his 22nd birthday, twelve years ago, way back in 2003 - he had climbed to a heady World No. 2 in the rankings. Those were the days !
But Father Time can be very cruel, especially where sport is concerned. The new boys push the old guys out, just like younger lions taking over the pride.
So suddenly he is 34, and ready for the seniors tour. Sad really.
I hate to think where he sits in the rankings today (can't quite bring myself to check ........ )

The seniors tour players need to pray he stays interested in the main tour for a long time.

I imagine they're praying already bb.
Meanwhile ......I did eventually get round to checking Federer's current ranking. Seems like they haven't fixed that dreadful new-look ATP site. What a mess it continues to be ..... never gets updated as quickly as the old site .....still showing Fed as World No.2, like in 2003 .......

Remember how we all laughed when Fed said he wanted to play the 2016 Olympics ? At this rate he may be around for the 2020 Games.

Sfp - yes, most of us did laugh very dismissively - I was certainly one of them.
Back then, I think I all but used the word 'delusional' in response to all his own comments about Rio 2016 being a target. And yet ...... here we are, less than 12 months away, and barring any major downturn in form he will be in decent shape to give it a go.
If the field is at full strength, I wouldn't rate his chances of taking Gold very highly; but there seems every reason to expect a perfectly respectable showing.

Not brag or anything, but seeing as the recent Ashes series had me embarrassingly on the wrong side of history, I think it pertinent to take this moment and gloat, unendingly, about the fact that I called his retirement situation spot on.

Could you expand re 'spot on ' when calling his 'retirement situation' .......??
Did you say something like ......"I think he will play on to the Rio Olympics ....." ? - in which case, I don't think it can be classed as the prediction of the decade, but was more about simply agreeing with Fed's own commentary in media interviews ; a minority view sure, though by no means a unique one
OR did you call a specific date on which he will retire ? - in which case, you might have to hold fire on the unending gloating & bragging until such time as an official announcement ....... !!

Let's not go counting chickens like country folk. 12 months is still a long time and he would be nearly 35. Form can go quickly and the body at his age even quicker

More that he will in fact still be competing (Ie at an elite level) come Rio 2016. Unfortunately can't Find the exact thread anymore. And I can't really be bothered to. But safe to see I was in the "put your pitchforks down" side of the 2013 retirement witch hunt.

Re: Happy 32nd Birthday to Roger Federer!
Here is a list of open era grand slam winners by age.
http://www.tennis28.com/slams/agerecords_winners.html#oldest
Ken Rosewall is in the top three slots.
Federer sits a mere 11th, with Agassi, Sampras, Connors, Laver, Ashe, Andres Gimeno also above him having won a slam at an older age. (this list does not include 2014 and 2015).
However any further grand slams for Federer would put him ahead of all players except Ken Rosewall, in the open era unless it's one of the next 3-4 slams in which case he would be behind Andres Gimeno.
If he wants to beat Ken Rosewall's record, he'll need to win a slam at least as late as 2019.
That's just open era. Wimbledon. The oldest singles champion of all time was Arthur Gore (Great Britain) at 41 yr 182 days in 1909. According to source: http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/index.php?threads/oldest-grandslam-winner.237439/ That's going to be a challenging record to beat.

So that was posted by HB back in 2015.
Fast forward to today, and Federer is indeed now the oldest Open era Slam winner bar Rosewall.
The two wins which keep Rosewall ahead of Federer both came at the Aussie Open. All credit to him ; but fair to say I think, that back in the early 70's (and indeed for a good few years beyond) the AO field was never as comprehensive, relative to the other Slams, as it subsequently became.
I think Rosewall's record is pretty safe. (But then again, I also thought, for a long time, that Fed had won his very last Slam at Wimbledon 2012 ........ )
