Andre Ward speaks out on...
GGG
GGG not wanting to face him right now....
Wants to see GGG v Kid Chocolate
Martinez still number 1 in middleweight division....
Wants to return 28 September.....
Contract squabbles with Dan Goosman....
Facing Chavez jnr makes sense....

Re: Interesting words from Mr Ward.
Martinez is number 1..........Has a wealth of victories behind him.....
Macklin too............
GGG gets owned by Ward who is too everything for him..........Big mistake to take Andre on.......
Macklin was ordinary...Ward shows angles, footwork and moves GGG has only read about..
Looks good GGG but Macklin doesn't prove anything..

Eh? What has Macklin got to do with anything, have I missed something?
Ward is in a tricky position atm, just too good for anyone it seems and, unlike similarly position Floyd, he's just not a draw so people won't even go in with him just for the payday.

Re: Interesting words from Mr Ward.
Think you're on to something onetwo. Andre ward is interesting. He needs to ditch the son of god thing and reinvent himself as 'Andre interesting ward'. Spitting image did wonders for Steve Davis' profile back in the 80's.
He could take one step further and be Andre ward 'interesting.... Very interesting'. Buffer could read that out in the manner of Barry Davis. Though for fans of 70's football it would work better for Andy lee.
Just trying to do my bit for Andre's profile.
I'd add a boxing related comment but I fell asleep watching the clip. Did he say anything interesting?

Re: Interesting words from Mr Ward.
Why should the number 2 p4p fighter...who holds the ring and other titles struggle to make fights......??
Not his fault..........It's other cowardly muppets who know they are going to get trashed...
Where is the ambition ????? They should want Andre..
Carry on Wardy and just pick up sizeable paydays for fighting ordinary opponents....Forget froch he'll always be remembered as a paper champ..during your reign.

Has someone, or Martinez, used GGG's job on Macklin as some kind of yardstick or justification?

Re: Interesting words from Mr Ward.
Because he's still not 'the man' at the weight, and lost (pretty convincingly) to the guy that is.
'Paper-champ' is (deliberately) over-egging it, but with Ward around nobody esle can be considered THE divisional champ.

Haha thanks Truss was about to comment myself.
i would like to see ward in the UK though on a separate note. Just to see how he copes in unfamiliar territory in front of a very hostile crowd.

Martinez is saying he wants to fight Cotto.
Both are ring worn but I think after the entertainment they have given the fans over the years they deserve a big winnable fight involving a a nice pay day.

Fair point Truss, but to dispose of Macklin in that manner, without breaking a sweat was shocking. It wasnt like he just landed a big shot early, he bossed Macklin about in a manner I haven't seen Macklin treated before.

Think Martinez has started to decline following the JCCJr bout. Could be ripe for the taking (for GGG) in a year or so's time.

Re: Interesting words from Mr Ward.
A paper champ is someone who is gifted a belt out of the ring. Froch won his by beating on a guy whod held the title for years. Not the man in his division, but not a paper champ either.
Agree with Alex on Cotto v Martinez.
I think Ward decisions GGG, but style wise GGG poses problems. Swarmer v boxer, both the best at their respective styles right now. The reason I give it to Ward is that he looks like a light heavyweight in super middleweight clothing. GGG looks like an average size middleweight right now. He'd still be the puncher by a mile, but Ward's size would negate GGG's most potent weapon somewhat. There's no reason not to make GGG v Martinez other than sympathy for Sergio, which I kind of get. I want their to be a valid reason not to make it but there isn't. The best should fight the best.

Re: Interesting words from Mr Ward.
This why there should onlybe ONE champ per division. Otherwise everyone can "pick a favourite".
Back to topic, Truss you said "Why should the number 2 p4p fighter...who holds the ring and other titles struggle to make fights......?"
The answer is simple. He's boring to watch. He can't draw flies to a corpse. He is indeed streets ahead of the rest but he's as exciting as beige paint. He doesn't have the silky skills of Floyd, nor the exciting KO stats of GGG or Matthysse. His charisma just isn't there. I have no doubts about his ability but people just don't want to watch him. Shame really.

Boxing is business, as Az liked to say, so there's glory and there's feeding your family. Lose against Ward or beat someone else for a not dissimilar payday? Can see why some pick the latter.

Don't think it's that clear cut though.
Have no doubt Groves will get paid better for Froch than he would as a Ward mandatory, for example.

you can't be a bonafide champ when you've lost to another champ at the same weight....No one took Mike weaver seriously..
Barker is a paper champion..also..

Re: Interesting words from Mr Ward.
He's been inactive since this time last year. I know he's had injury/surgery issues, but it doesn't instill confidence if the "main man" hasn't fought in over a year.
He doesn't even appear to have a fight lined up at the moment. It's worrying when someone has that much talent yet goes away for a year and hardly anybody notices.
He seems to have taken the approach (rightly in my book) that the contenders should come to him. There are only 2 reasons why they don't. They're either scared of him, or know it's not worth their while. We all know that he won't fight outside of the USA (Ok he's had 2/26 in the Caribbean) so even if the contenders think they've got a chance they don't want to fight him for fear of a homeland decision.
We watch boxing for the excitement it brings. I like a bit of skill, a toe-to-toe encounter and a good KO. A bit of lip at the press conferences is always a good indication of what may transpire. However, Andre Ward for all his ability comes across as someone who is great at defence, holds, butts and has zero charisma. He's doubtless a nice guy but as you've alluded in the past, Truss, nice doesn't sell. There's NO excitement. Certainly I wouldn't pay to watch him. If it were free, then yes, fine. But he isn't fun to view, and also he doesn't have the perceived arrogance of a Hamed or a Floyd that make you want to see him beaten.
I'd rate him as the best fighter the general public haven't heard of.

Groves won't be paper champ as he will have won it in the ring, despite "your definition".
Which contenders are ducking Ward for easier options anyway? He's faced all the best guys already. Apart from arguably Bute who could have remained a top super middle if his confidence hadn't been shattered quite so brutally.

For example, fighting a marketable domestic fighter in a big 'battle of Britian' clash, esp if it gets UK PPV, will spin more money (and be more winnable) than fighting in front of a small US crowd away from home.
