The Culture Cup round 3
First topic message reminder :
Ok folks, here we are with round 3 of the Culture Cup and the poll for Best film released since the turn of the century
Round 2 is now complete and what a turn around. Numbers 1 and 2 from round one are the only posters not to score a single point in round two. Yes, michaels and Galted, that means you pair of miscreants. compelling and rich and The Womble spent most of the round battling each other for first place but it eventually went to c&r who goes flying up the leaderboard. Same as the last round for me, the best nomination ended up in second place but such is life. Adam was his usual consistent self with another third place, reinforcing the image we have of him as a desperately middle of the road sort of chap. Union got some points again which was nice to see. Poor old ChequeredJersey is in last place with a solitary point, bringing up the rear which is something he will have to get used to studying medicine.
Here are the runners and riders;
compelling & rich (Teenage Kicks): (12) 16
Adam (Who wants to live forever): (8) 16
Hero (Everybody Hurts): (7) 14
The Womble (Heroes): (10) 13
seanmichaels (History): (0) 12
Azzy (Should I stay or should I go): (6) 11
Galted (This is England): (0) 10
jbeadlesbigrighthand (Born to Run): (4) 8
Dolphin Ziggler (You Know You're Right): (1) 7

TopHat (Ain't no mountain high enough): (5) 7

Union (Wonderland): (3) 5
The Boss (Tequila Sunrise): (1) 5
bhb001 (Stairway to Heaven): (5) 5
Julius (Little Red Corvette): (2) 4
Rowley(Days): (2) 4
ChequeredJersey (Changes): (1) 1
Round 4 moves on to TV and the question is Who is the greatest comedy character on TV since the turn of the century?. Limiting it to choices since the 1st January 2000 produced some really good shouts for round 3 so we will give it another go. It can be someone from a US series, UK series, a one off show, whatever you want. So long as the programme they appeared in didn't start to be aired before 1.1.2000.
For example: Del Boy is not allowed as Only Fools and Horses was aired before the turn of the century (and the show isn't funny either but that's another story). Hopefully it will get quite a broad spectrum of choices.
Please PM me a couple of choices and can you please let me know the date the programme was aired so I don't have to spend time looking it up.
Here is the poll for round 3 and it is a good'un. Remember that it is open for the whole forum to vote!
Thanks.

Yes I would. Baffling choice, awful film with two awful singers hamming it up. I hate musicals, but even I can see that Moulin Rouge is nothing compared to some of the "greats" in the genre.Adam D wrote:Looking at some of the comments on here, I think people would put Moulin Rouge in there as well Kwini!
Musicals are the worst thing I can think of. I prefer famine.

Disappointed that The Lives of Others hasn't got a single vote. Really good film.
Anyone else like it (apart from the person who nominated, obviously)?

Re: The Culture Cup round 3
Went with Dark Knight, which I maintain is IMO a superb film (and not only because of Ledger's performance, though he undoubtedly helped). Then again, I love Nolan's work, also thought Inception was very good.
Second choice (and first vote) to The Lives of Others, which is a very very fine film (strongly recommend it to those who may not have seen it), probably my favourite foreign language film. Travesty that it hasn't received any other votes yet.
In Bruges the best of the rest for me, though there are other very good films there.

I did. Didn't think it was overly amazing though, seem to recall a few silly coincidences were needed to progress the story (then again, could be thinking of another film entirely). I do have a filthy admiration for Martina Gedeck, she's probably up your street.Mind the windows Tino. wrote:Disappointed that The Lives of Others hasn't got a single vote. Really good film.

DARK KNIGHT NEVER MEANT TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY SAYS NOLAN
Batman film The Dark Knight and its spin-offs, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises, were an elaborate joke says writer and director Christopher Nolan. In an interview with Empire magazine Nolan claimed that the films were carefully re-edited to remove any lines or scenes that may have been intellectually stimulating. "It all started off as a bet between myself, George Lucas (Star Wars) and David Yates (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) to see who could make the worst "successful" film" Nolan said adding, "I won hands down". Nolan said impressive performances by stars such as Christian Bale "overcompensated" for the one-dimensional characters, shallowness of the plot and absence of intelligent dialogue and fooled less discerning moviegoers into over-estimating the cinematic value of the production.
When asked to describe the typical Dark Knight fan Nolan responded, "oh, he's a plank, the kind of gormless cretin who gets confused by everyday objects such as ladders, cutlery or traffic lights". Nolan confirmed that plans for a fourth film in the series were at an advanced stage but added that "it's tempting just to rescreen the original Dark Knight with a different beginning, the brainpower and attention span of most Dark Knight fans would be insufficient to enable them to realise they were watching something they'd seen before. Throw in some more loud noises and a bit of CGI and another blockbuster is on the cards, rivalling such icons of mediocrity as Avatar and Titanic".
Asked if the interview was bogus and nothing more than an attempt to influence the 606 v2 Culture Cup vote Nolan laughed and said, "no, no, of course not".

The weirdest one I've come across, even weirder than Galted, was a friend's dad who wouldn't eat anything that was called the same as its animal name.
I.e. beef and pork were ok, but chicken and lamb weren't.

My favourite thing with the Oscars is when they realise they have totally overlooked either an actor or director and just give them an oscar for any old guff to redress the balance. Did it with Pacino for Scent of a Woman, Newman for the Hustler and Scorsese for the Departed, each and every one of them has done infinitely better work in their time.

Him and Scotty spent the best part of 3 months telling us over and over again that they didn't.
I think they almost convinced themselves in the end.

Went for City of God and Gladiator, both superb films that I could watch over and over again. Did anyone ever watch the follow-up movie City of Men?
Fantastic rounds so far Tino! Had me in stitches yesterday.

One film which I would have quite liked to have seen nominated in this round is A Serious Man (Coen brothers), one of my personal favourites. Then again, it might have nicked the vote from The Lives of Others, so maybe it's a good thing.

Gone for City of God, then Oldboy just edged out In Bruges and Gladiator.
Pretty good list but got to say im shocked Moulin Rouge and Inception are there.

The Coens' standards have probably slipped a bit since the turn of the century but they have had some sublime films in that time - The Man Who Wasn't There, O Brother Where Art Thou?, No Country For Old Men and A Serious Man. Just noticed as I typed them out that there seems to be some sort of male theme in the titles.

I voted In Bruges and nowt else. Apart from that one, I've only seen Warrior, Gladiator, The Dark Knight and Argo from the list and none of them would I say were the best from 2000 on. I dunno what might be better but balls to the movie industry if nothing has been.
Don't get me wrong, they do have their redeeming features. Warrior had Start A War by The National on it. Gladiator had tigers. Argo had beards. The Dark Knight killed Heath Ledger.
But none of that is enough to garner a vote from me. Sorry.

In hindsight, that was harsh.
Given Warrior a vote too now for having that song by The National.
