Headaches
This morning I have come to work with what my wife would describe a migraine but what i would describe as a really bad headache. Now this hasnt been caused by drinking or late nights etc, its just happened as it sometimes does.
My question is this.
Do fighters ever get headaches the day of the fight?
And if they do, are they allowed to take ibruprofen/ aspirin etc?
It might seem like a silly question but I am genuinely curious as to how a fighter would cope with this!!

Re: Headaches
Drink water, the tightening sensation you feel is often caused by the membrane covering the brain being pulled taut. This is due to a lack of fluid (this is what causes the serious injuries when they get punched)
This may or may not be true. Think I read something about headaches and hangovers (can't remember as I had a massive hangover at the time)

Re: Headaches
They train for months to peak on a certain day. Adrenalin is a powerful fuel and the mind is primed psychologically for battle.
Think about the school fights around the back of the bike shed. Nobodies worried about a headache sitting in class knowing they will be facing the school yard bully at 4pm.

Re: Headaches
I offered my wife some ibuprofen last night for her headache. She looked at me with a puzzled expression and said she didn't have one.
I said "right, upstairs now".

Re: Headaches
If you think you have a headache then trust me thats what you have, migrainies are horrible things where your eyesight tends to go all screwy.
If a boxer had a migraine and went into a fight they would get battered as they would be seeing double, when you only see double you can't even 'hit the one in the middle'.

Get someone in the office to punch you in the face. It might not cure your headache but it'll make me feel better.

It's the only time I get it, milky. I guess you're unfortunately fertile. Wear lycra, take up cycling, have lots of hot baths and it might take lots of practice to get number 36.

Re: Headaches
Haha, know the feeling (my wife not yours). What makes my life even more unfortunate is that we only have 2 children. Basically this means that every minute I spend on here is either five minutes before or five minutes after I have watched some porn.Mind the windows Tino. wrote:It's the only time I get it, milky. I guess you will be able to work out which it is depending upon the level of self loathing present in my posts.

Huw, it's one thing loathing yourself for not beating up some coke bottle throwing kids, but porn is every man's God given right.

In November it will be 6 years since I got married. I've tried to convince Mrs Superfly that the 6th anniversary is represented by porn and not iron. I'm not sure she believes me, particularly after the whole "wood" debacle.

Re: Headaches
Worst headache I ever had was one morning in about 2007, woke up & started getting ready for work & lost all control over my right hand, & couldn't see out my right eye. Head pain was unbelievable & it scared the hell out of me, as of that day I was laid up for 3 weeks solid with the worst flu I've ever had, proper flu not man flu. Never been so ill.
Anyway no one wanted to know that but I thought I'd just share with you.
I boxed when I was a kid & my head always used to hurt the day after a bout/sparring, which was one of the reasons I stopped, it never bothered me getting hit at the time but the next day my head would be cracking.
One of the reasons I've got so much respect for anyone who gets in the ring, it hurts not just at the time but after, & I was 15 & wearing head gear, wonder how much Hatton's head hurt the day after the Pac fight, a few mil £ must soften it but pain is pain

Re: Headaches
Echoing DynamiteChris, every night after sparring my head would pound even if I didn't feel it was a tough spar.
Add that to a cracked/broken rib, sleep time wasn't fun. But by about midday the next day I couldn't wait to get back to the boxing gym.
My previous alias was youlikedags, so some of you may remember that you put me in touch with a pro coach in 2011 through this forum and I was taken on, training with pros, at the age of 29 without any previous amateur experience.
Was due to make my debut last year, but had a stroke at the end of the year, which destroyed my boxing dream. Now that's what you call a proper headache!

It is more the sense of shame I have when I've finished my business, you know, when I take off the marigolds and remove the makeup I wore to make myself feel pretty.milkyboy wrote:Huw, it's one thing loathing yourself for not beating up some coke bottle throwing kids, but porn is every man's God given right.

Re: Headaches
You have my sympathies. My dad had his first one when I was about 19, I'm now 42 and he's needed 24 hr nursing care all that time. He's had six major ones including one that required a blood clot removing from his brain and it ultimately robbed him of his speech and ability to walk and feed himself. He's now fed via a stomach peg!Rick James wrote:Echoing DynamiteChris, every night after sparring my head would pound even if I didn't feel it was a tough spar.

... But it's not all good news rick!
Strewth Dave, really sorry to hear about your old boy, but maybe if you don't have any 'my old boy made a full recovery' type stories you should keep them to yourself! Hope you're on the mend rick.

I might have been.
Sorry to hear those stories, lads. I was still laughing about jimdig and superfly's post, this brought me back down. All the best.
