Best film released in the decade of your birth.
The Culture Cup round 7
First topic message reminder :
Two rounds of the Culture Cup in one week. I don't usually do anything twice a week so count yourself lucky. Round 7 brings the poll for 'Best film released in the decade of your birth'. Before we move on to that, lets round up the results from round 6 and 'Best song with 3 or more words in the title'.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Galted walked away from this round with full points having gone for the shamelessly populist Joy Division pick. Interestingly, the name Joy Division comes from a sinister background. Nazi officers used the term to describe young Jewish girls imprisoned at Auschwitz who were forced into the camp brothel and told to 'smile' and 'look happy' by the German officers who subsequently christened them the 'Joy Division'. I think if you extrapolate it out in a fair and transparent fashion, Galted is probably a Nazi. Anyway, we digress. Our two fronts runners, compelling & rich and Hero both picked up 10 points, keeping them just clear at the top of the table. Decent points hauls for seanmichaels, Adam, Azzy and TopHat keep them in the running. How TopHat got any points with Bryan Adams, I will never know.
Jeff and superfly keep up their battle for supremacy over each other, with both picking up 7 points and remaining neck and neck in the league. It says a lot about that pair that they are rooted in mid-table whilst battling each other. Some people are just destined for mediocrity. The biggest loser this week was jbeadlesbigrighthand who finished with no votes after the second batch of vote rigging from some lone moron. If beadle had just kept his one vote, he would have had 3 points and be level with Union. As it is, he is rock bottom.

The next round is back to TV and this time I am looking for 'The best ever documentary'. Wide open choice and assuming everyone has seen a documentary, it should be a even field. If you haven't ever seen a documentary, I suggest you just google a few and then lie. As ever, please PM a couple of choices.
After the second installment of 'votegate' I have had to make some changes this round. You will only be able to vote for one film and won't be allowed to cancel it either so choose carefully and get it right first time. It will reduce the volume of votes but will stop them disappearing randomly. You can all thank the feckless little cretin who messed around for the last 2 rounds for the changes. Hopefully his mum will catch him with his sticky little fingers on the family PC and tell him off.
To avoid any confusion (Union) you can vote for any film, it doesn't have to be from your decade, that was only for the participants.
Remember the poll is open for the whole forum to vote!

Re: The Culture Cup round 7
genuinely couldn't decide, as there are some wonderful films on there: any of Jaws, Star Wars, Pulp Fiction, Die Hard or Life of Brian would fully be deserving of a vote. So I basically cheated, had a look at results, and in the interest of equality went with Pulp Fiction: superb film, with Tarentino at his very best.

Worse: Do you know what RUN DMC's biggest selling/highest grossing hit was?
It was the vs Jason Nevins remix. Which they only paid him a standard basic level remix fee of $50k for whilst absolutely raking it in themselves.

From the decade after Casablanca, I'll go for A Place in the Sun. A masterpiece, sadly now largely forgotten along with its star Montgomery Clift who then was at his very best.

Re: The Culture Cup round 7
I think what happened was that someone had picked Rocky when the question was released in its original form (Best film from the year of birth) and then when the question was adjusted, the same poster changed their nomination to something else. I think you and t'other posters PM's came in around the same time and that was enough to confuse me so I told you it was taken when, in fact, it wasn't.Adam D wrote:Can I ask a question - I chose Rocky and told it was already taken - what gives?
I get confused by bright lights, shiny things and trying to do more than one thing at a time so I can only apologise Adam. As a gesture of goodwill, I really should vote for your nomination but seeing as I can't change my vote thanks to the sackless cretin who forced me to take away that option, you will just have to make do with my sincere apology.

Indeed I did, I was late sending in my nominations and assumed that all the decent 80's films would have been taken. It's a cr@p film granted, but it has Peter O'Toole, Peter Cook, Faye Dunaway and Simon Ward in it! Plus its Supergirl! What more could anyone ask for!bhb001 wrote:So you had Supergirl, then. It can't have. Multiple choice and vote canceling has been disabled. The only people who could do it are the admin team and seeing as none of them nominated it, it would be a rather strange thing to do.seanmichaels wrote:Some kind of hokey pokey has been going on behind the scenes to get Die Hard to the top......

As it stands, 606v2 users rate Die Hard as 2.25x the film that Scarface is. And 3x the film that Cool Hand Luke is. If anyone doesn't like that, maybe they should start a new rival site at www.culturedcompanions.com or something

If we had a poll of favourite coins, and 8 people voted for 50p and only two voted for £1, that wouldn't mean that 8 50p's are only worth two quid.

No, it would mean they were 4x£1, ie £4. Same value as the 8x50p. But I get what you mean.
Maybe if I add a to my post, you'll pick up on the sarcasm
If Die Hard is deemed 3x the film CHL is, we're all doomed as a species.

I was in Canada briefly in September and had one of those new polymer notes that are coming out over here. Weird things they are. They feel like they should be in a Monopoly set or something. When I handed it over in a shop, I started to sweat and got all anxious that the lady was going to call it a fake.seanmichaels wrote:I noticed they are very reminiscent of a euro the other day. Scarface with Al Pacino is over rated; style over substance in my opinion. Can't remember that role, but I wouldn't be surprised. Normally there is a real stand out "support" actor in these films ala Steve Buscemi in Reservoir Dogs or Sean Penn in Carlito's Way.Mind the windows Tino. wrote:Yep. Apart from Steven Bauer's portrayal of Manny which is brilliant.bhb001 wrote:
