Five Boxing myths exploded - Hagler, Hearns, Curry, Honey, Farr, Pep + Bowe
First topic message reminder :
1. Hagler won because he took Hearns best shot....... Wrong......Hearns never landed his best shot.......There are people around who say Hearns couldn't stop Hagler........Yep on the night...Tyson/Lewis couldn't stop Tucker........Make no mistake the right hand that Shuler took leaves Hagler tasting canvas.......Nobody takes Hearns best shot at 147-160.........Nobody.
2. Curry quit against Honey..........Heard it so many times.......Fact is the Doctor stopped the fight......and the head shaking as Curry observed later was to do with the fact his timing was out and he had a huge gash on his eye.......
3. Tommy Farr ran Louis close..........No he didn't.
4. Pep won a round without throwing a punch.......
5. Bowe was scared of Lewis........He took on the more respected Holy instead.......For more money.
Cheers.

Well that's my view truss. I've seen a fair few of Leonard's earlier fights and whilst he was often aggressive that's the only one i recall where he does a head on shoulder jc Chavez impression and has the commentators aghast at his tactics.

Easy to forget Duran lost to dejesus and had to get up off the deck in their last fight in 130 degree heat...
Never seen a fighter that gets a free pass on his failings like roberto.......
"Hearns was 6ft 1 and 154".........Barkley was 6ft 1 and 160..........
Get my drift..

Yip, practically the same fighters were Hearns and Barkley.

Truss, I know your entire frame of reference is 1980-89 but you're missing the point if you're trying to pigeon-hole him as a fighter from his exploits post Montreal.
Duran was Duran from around '72 to '80 (arguably '78). After beating Leonard he was 71-1 with the lone defeat avenged. That p****s all over Floyd's record.
He was never the same after Montreal. He was too heavy, the hunger had gone and he was fighting for paydays -- nothing more. That he managed to continue until 2001 is astonishing.

He only permanently retired thanks to a car crash, otherwise him and B Hop might be having a unification fight.
