Re: Boxing namesakes
Not quite what you are asking for, but I did see Danny Williams at Russell Sq station once. It was not long after he had beaten Mark Potter with one arm and I shouted something, most probably idiotic, about how brave he was. He gave me a nervous smile and actually looked stunned that someone know who he was!

Re: Boxing namesakes
My great granddad gave my granddad the name Jack Dempsey (Dempsey being a middle name). If my memory serves me right it was a tribute to some old Heavyweight. Apparently he was quite popular back in the twenties.

I did a football tour in 2005 in south America when I was at uni, the guy who ran our digs in Argentina was called Sergio Martinez (no mention of the Gabriel bit though). Good times.
A friend of mines older brother is called John Murray. He's a graphic designer but has probably fought a better level of opposition than John the boxer (just kidding - having a Shah moment!).

If it counts (in a completely irrelevant and irreverant way), I passed Frank Bruno in Dudley Street in Wolverhampton several years ago. I believe he was in panto at the time.

If it was the French Maid outfit that made you believe that, you might need to reconsider. I believe it was his preferred outfit for a while.

Your Bruno definately trumps my Williams. Although does my actually speaking (harrassing) to big Danny give me some more credit?

A mate once laid a log at school so big he refused to flush and christened it Frank Bruno's leg. He locked the bog and climbed over the top so we could all have a look. It was astonishingly big.

For the record, the best claim to fame posted on the old 606 was someone who had seen Johnny Nelson riding a horse in Chesterfield. He dismounted outside a shop and when he noticed people staring at him said "What? You never seen a black man riding a horse before?"
I remember that. Also I don't think i've ever seen a black man ride a horse.

Who goes out dressed like that to steal a horse? Unless, of course, it was premeditated. Strange.

My wee cousin is called Scott Harrison. It's not the actual Scott Harrison my cousin has never attacked a Spanish barman in his life. Think he might have pummeled a few barwoman though.

Their is people with used Tyson that's what I meant but like I said on the thread when he was World Champion he was a young man so has to take responsibility for his actions.
Harrison never had this problem he was just a knob my Dad knows his uncle Peter and says most of his family are like that.

So you could blame Harrison's family for not teaching him how to behave properly.prettyboykev wrote:Scottrf wrote:There's not much debate with Tyson, it's just TRUSSY recycling old material he knows people will bite at.prettyboykev wrote:Unlike Tyson their is no room for debate with Harrison he was an idiot I met him in Glasgow City Centre a few times and he was a knob.

If everyone with a bad upbringing behaved like Tyson I'm not sure the world would be a great place.

Or you could say most normal people don't batter Spanish barmen for no apparent reason. He was a tool his family are tools apart from his uncle Peter the trainer he isn't a bad guy.
I grew up in Govan in Glasgow it's a hole and one of the most poverty stricken areas in Glasgow but if I was to try and use this as an excuse to be a knob it wouldn't work and I would be in prison. People need to man up and take responsibility for their own actions regardless of their upbringings.

Re: Boxing namesakes
Once Harrison became World Champion he had plenty of people ready and willing to give him loads of stick but at no stage did Harrison try and walk away or take himself off to focus on his training. Instead, he stayed where he'd grown up and fell into the same trap many people from poor backgrounds who get a bit of success do.
Trouble with Harrison was that whilst there was plenty of evidence to suggest he'd be better removing himself from Glasgow to focus on his boxing, he decided against it, thus exacerbating the problem.
Who's really at fault, the people of Glasgow who resent harrison's success and tried to bring him down or Harrison himself for not heeding the warning signs?
