Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/scores/schedule/schedule10.html
Chardy v Ferrer on RLA (Prediction Ferrer in 4).
Stosur v Ivanovic on RLA (Stosur in 3).
Djokovic in 3.
Looking forward to Berdych v Dzumhur on HiSense.
Gasquet in 3.
ERV v Anderson (ERV may upset Anderson).
Fognini v Querrey (with the usual Fognini drama).
It would be nice to see Dellacqua win over Zheng (but unlikely).
Enjoy.

Match of the day is Mayer v JJ. Tough one to call.
Eurosport 2 bizarrely showing Bartel v Pennetta to start with. I have zero interest in this one.

I am not so sure of Dellacqua, BS. She has had two easy matches against Bepa and Flipkens was handed a bagel.

Let me know if you want some commentary. I am watching a US ESPN 3 stream.

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
Flipkens looked good against Robson so destroying her was an impressive result. Dellacqua isn't great but she is streaky and I'd expect her to beat Zheng before a home crowd.
I'm ok without commentary. I could probably find a stream if I was that bothered!

Mayer up a set at 7-5 on JJ. Strange to see Mayer's racquet slip out his hand on his first server on the second SP.

Horrible game from JJ to get broken in the first game of second set.

2 more holds from Mayer and JJ is out of AO 2014.
PS: Just one more hold. JJ going out without a whimper.

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
Well it isn't exactly a surprise laverfan.
JJ has struggled in the first two rounds and played extended matches. Fluency was never really there and we know Mayer has been in good for lately.
Ferrer takes the first set 6-2 with the minimum fuss. Too many errors from Chardy.

Chardy is serving for the set, gets to 40-0 and still fails to serve it out

Ferrer takes the second set on a tie-break after Chardy had five set points. You have to feel in this heat that is a blow Chardy will not recover from. Ferrer leads 6-2 7-6.

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
Think we could see an upset in the Gasquet match. Robredo was on the comeback trail last year and remains dangerous, he looked good against Benneteau. Gasquet will need to hang tough.
Shame about JJ, but it's good to see Mayer doing well. Talented player, maybe just lacks that killer instinct at times.
And hello Craig, LF, socal

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
JJ was coming off two 5 setters in the heat and he is recovering from an injury had recently did not have good preparation and training for this tournament. I think this is a result of his abbreviated off season prep and a lot of time on court in last two rounds. Although Mayer has beaten before and is a tricky match up for him.

Roger-Vasselin now a set and a break up on Kevin Anderson. The seed in trouble. Berry getting under way against qualifier Dzumhur of Bosnia.

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
JJ suffered from slow starts in his first two matches which forced him into long matches in heat. Just coming back to full fitness must have drained him a lot. That would be backed up by his serving stats today which were poor by his standards. He will be back though.

Dzumhur hanging in this first set pretty well. Still on serve and the Bosnia has begun making slight inroads into Berdych serve - 5-4 to Berdych.

Berdych switches on at the key moment of the set whilst Dzumhur's inexperience shows. First set to Berdych 6-4.

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
Any news of Jamie Murray heard he suffered heatstroke. One of the ladies matches the girl looked like she was going to pass out and took a medical timeout. If this weather continues and Murray, Nadal, or Djoko get involved in one of those 5 set marathon wars late in the weak at that intensity level I fear for their health. In this a replay of the Djoko-Nadal final could be fatal.

Anderson comes from 4-1 down in a tie-break to take it 7-5 and we are level at two sets each.

Kevin Anderson showing that South African grit... Hopefully he doesn't show other South African trademark and choke from here.

Vasselin will need to be very strong mentally to win from here. He look the more fatigued after over three hours in baking conditions. Level at 1-1 in the final set.

Vasselin will not be happy about going five with a man who may or not be designed to chase antelopes for eight hours.

I think Anderson is more designed to warn ships that there are rocks nearby!kingraf wrote:Vasselin will not be happy about going five with a man who may or not be designed to chase antelopes for eight hours.

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
Anderson is not bad he could be a lot better though. At his size he doesn't move half bad and has a lot of weapons. Interestingly, Berdych has sort of been his big bogey opponent who has almost single handedly stood in his way to a higher ranking.

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
Is it just me or has there been a heck of a lot more five setters than we normally get at slams. Anderson looks better mentally equipped to win this - saves break points to hold and leads 6-5.

Re: Australian Open: Day Five - 2014
Anderson comes through in five. Vasselin choked big time on big points at key moments - perhaps that is why he has never reached the 4th Round at a slam. Very play to Anderson though he hung in there and came back from the dead to complete the win.

It's unbelievable that Andy and Rafa can go years without playing and yet Anderson and Berdy seem to meet every other tournament!
Good show from Anderson today but Berdych looks in good form. A bridge too far for the South African I suspect.

Anderson 0-9 against Berdych with 5 losses to Berdych in 2013. Not a good matchup. Am I correct that we could have Djoko v. Foggy match in the round of 16?
