Featherweight boxer Oscar Gonzalez passed away Sunday in Mexico, less than 24 hours following a 10th round knockout loss to Jesus Galicia in their Televisa-televised main event Saturday evening in Mexico City.
Gonzalez was rushed to the hospital immediately following his loss to Galicia, in what was a billed as a WBC silver featherweight title fight. The fighter has since been declared brain dead, with his family to arrive from Tepic on Sunday afternoon before the fighter is officially pronounced dead.
Gonzalez was 33 years young at the time of his passing. The featherweight held a ring record of 23-3 (14KO) and was in the midst of a three-fight win streak prior to Saturday evening. The run included an upset points win over former 122 lb. titlist Rico Ramos last April.
RIP

Terrible news and one of those stern reminders you get every once in a while of how serious and unforgiving a sport it is that we all love and follow. RIP.

Re: Tragedy strikes again...
There have been more tragedies in the past year than I can ever remember in a similar period in the past. Hopefully it is not a trend.
Even given the risks of boxing no fighter expects these horrendous outcomes.

His family get 50,000 in way of insurance because it's a WBC sanctioned regional bout. I don't know what to say, as much as I love the sport, is there really any rationale argument for why it should be allowed...Rip.

Spare a thought for Raul Hirales as well in all this, two of his last five opponents have now passed away.
