Re: 6Ns average ages
"ball comes in for charteris so that should lower the age"
On a rough and ready basis, by about 0.7 of a year for the matchday team (10 years difference), making Wales only very marginally different from England

I'd guess that you did rounded-down chronological age to explain the differences in your calcs, killer.killer938 wrote:Portnoy's Complaint wrote:

Re: 6Ns average ages
Nah, I just took their age at the time and didn't include the months, so if someone was 29 years and 2 months or 29 years and 10 months I just said they were 29, it's not 100% accurate but gave a rough idea at least

Re: 6Ns average ages
How about SA '07? I assume they were even older? Monty, Smit, DuRant, and Matfield etc. all quite old. England the other finalists had some dinosaurs like Catt at 36.

Re: 6Ns average ages
So the 2011 winners were Starters 28.13, Bench 27.94, Squad 28.39.
And we still have to add 1.65 to today's age to find a RWC final age.
Seems like a lot of changes to be made in Ireland. No matter, In about 12 months, the IRFU will give Schmidt a post-RWC extended contract if past precedent becomes the norm.
I'd say that the average optimum age of the backs and back-rowers would be about 26-7 and the front five about 29-30.

So I assume you are concerned that next years world cup has come too soon for England?
Do you mean a pre world cup extended contract?
Actually there are very few changes to be made to Ireland. BOD being the only immediate one. POC will be captain and everyone else is relatively young.

Sounds like they could still do a job.

I wouldn't exactly say young.....

Darcy probably will be rotated or miss out for Marshall and Ross will be replaced by Moore by then.
Every world cup winning squad has players over 30. Ireland has a good mix. No age issues at all.

You sound at ease Guns, if that was England I'd be seriously worried.
There's a stack of over 30's, you must be at least concerned with midfield?

if I was English Id be worried you havent enough experienced players and standout leaders.
Your average squad age will be below the average age of WC winning squads historically.
Nothing to be worried re Ireland. The team is full of leaders, on course for a championship win and there are lots of good young players coming through. There has never in the history of Irish rugby been such a strong pool of talent.

I am worried about that.
I like what SL is doing though, this side is beating more experienced teams and will only get better with more time together.
I'm not having a pop, my dad is Irish and he thinks there's too many "old buggers" in the Irish team.

Irish rugby is actually moving into a golden age:

The old buggers are playing well.
BOD, POC and Darce have all out played all their opposition in every game so far in this 6N. if they are good enough age doesnt matter.

You think 12trees and Burrell out played BOD and Darce? Those three were three of our best players in that game. Did you miss it?

I know BOD is good but to count as two players? Maybe one a half, or one and three quarters at a push.

I thought Burrell outplayed BOD who was poor imo. Darcy showed up well, possibly shades 36.
Lawes played a lot better than POC.

Re: 6Ns average ages
BOD made the second most yards out of any Irish player by either crashing through Burrell or beating him on the outside. Burrell was very quiet by contrast. Is it any coincidence he was one of England's quietest backs? He had scored in his previous two games yet didnt come close to a score v Ireland because BOD kept him in his pocket all day.
Watch this clip. It shows BOD beating Burrell on a number of occasions.

Re: 6Ns average ages
What's wrong with BOD is that a moving-on, disinterested, we-got-new-Gods-of-our-own world doesn't simply care anymore. Ignore him and he'll go away is the mantra.
But he's still there for two more games (hopefully) .... and as Guns footage shows, the fans might want to ignore him but the footage won't.

Burrell made 39m, BOD 50m.
I don't think that stat explains who played better as stats often don't.
Either way, Lawes played much better than POC.
