Heidler sets new hammer world record (Hallesche Erdgas throws meeting)

World U20 champion and new UK record holder Sophie Hitchon boosted further her new-gained foothold in the high 60s with her second furthest throw ever of 67.00m in her third attempt for an eventual seventh, though somewhat lacked that consistency across her throws today. But the signs are there that she is about to launch an attack on the 70m mark quite soon.

Her series today: 63.10, x, 67.00, x, 61.84, 61.51.

As concerns the rest of the Brits out in action (Brett Morse is mentioned in the discus thread), last season's surprise Laura Whittingham made a useful and consistent opening with 55.48m for fifth in the women's javelin main pool, a long way behind Christina Obergfoll's (GER) dominating last-round 64.53m.

That was easily her best ever season starter and it's worth pointing out that she took as late as late June to throw anywhere near that last year, recommending that considerable improvements lie afoot. Her card looked like 54.87, 55.48, 53.68, 50.09, 53.16, 54.60.

UK champion Jade Nicholls improved to a SB of 56.20m, second best in the country this term, for sixth in the main group of the women's discus, also obtaining a 56m sharp on the way. Her series were 56.20 (PB), 56.00, 52.52, 49.79, 54.24, 55.46.

Last, Merwyn Luckwell looks like he made a cautious return to competition for the first time in nearly eleven months at 71.82m. His own series was 70.21, 69.74, 66.70, 67.78, x, 71.82.

Better from Brett Morse today, though I'm sure he'll be far from content, as he won the U23 men's competition with 61.27m that came in his second effort, rounding off at a 61.12m in the last round.

Sophie Hitchon followed suit to comfortably secure the U23 women's game thanks to an also second-round 66.27m, backed up with a 65.76m in the fifth.
