Request to change title of "football" page to "soccer"
As above, if possible can the title of the football page be amended to make it "soccer". Many countries have their own native versions of football, and we seem to have a multi-national spread of users of the forum. for example, an american friend of mine who recently joined, entered the football page as he wanted to engage in a discussion about his favourite team, the Oakland Raiders. He was quite confused to find much of the threads and discussion was about teams and sporting terminology which was totally alien to that of the sport with which he was familiar. As an Irishman I myself sometimes unwittingly venture into the football page in search of news about the Offaly footballers before realising my mistake.
Would this be possible?

To be fair to your friend there is a section entitled American Football that he must have completely missed, personally "soccer" is a term I don't like not sure why just irks me.

Football is the correct name of the sport as all governing bodies testify:-
FA = FOOTBALL Association
SFA = Scottish Football Association
UEFA = Union of European FOOTBALL Associations
FIFA roughly translates into English as The International Federation of Association FOOTBALL.
Need I go on? In short it has always been known as Football and always will be.

Actually....... when the Yanks adopted it from British students it was called Soccer in short for Association to differentiate from Rugby Football.
Re: Request to change title of "football" page to "soccer"
CFCNick I am talking from a majority viewpoint here and not what the USA call it. Besides they have never really taken to the sport so why should the rest of the globe change it's actual name to appease a country who has never really adopted it?

That's what WE called it when the Yanks adopted it. And they still call it that now.
Re: Request to change title of "football" page to "soccer"
No. It has always been known widely as football in the UK and i don't know of anybody in the sport that refers to it as soccer.

Nobody refers to it as soccer now but over 100 years they all did.

Sorry no I totally disagree. Now I am not over 100 years old but if you read back on newspaper articles of that time or Pathe News items or antique programmes it was ALWAYS referred to as football. I don't see clubs with the moniker of SC after their name do you? All carry FC for Football Club.

soccer is the international term for the sport, as this is an international forum I believe it makes sense to change it to soccer.

What about "Soccer AM" and "Soccer Saturday"? If Jeff Stelling can say "soccer" we should all adopt it.

No its not its a North American term for the sport in South America, Asia, Europe and Africa its known as Football. Hence the reason most national associations are called football federations.

Haha. Butthurt soccer haters.
I prefer to say football too but you can't deny soccer is the international term. Even some Engllish rugby players call it soccer.

Re: Request to change title of "football" page to "soccer"
Of course we can deny soccer in the international term - it isn't and stop pretending it is. The US are the only people to call it soccer nobody else and as I said they have never fully taken to the sport so why should the rest of the world change what they call it and have called it for 150 years just to appease a minority in the USA?
If CFCNick you can find one football team who calls itself a soccer team in its name you would be a genius. All football teams call themselves football clubs, all associations of the sport call it football and I have only ever known it to be called football in the many circles I have moved in at the many nationalities of people I have conversed with.

Of the 45 national FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) affiliates in which English is an official or primary language, 43 use football in their organisations' official names (only Canada and the United States use soccer). Soccer has been the prevailing term for association football in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, where other codes of football are dominant. In 2005, Australia's association football governing body changed its name from soccer to football to align with the general international usage of the term. In 2006, New Zealand decided to follow suit, stating that "the international game is called football".

Soccer is a horrible word, like "winningest" or "amazeballs".
It is an affront and an abomination to the greatest language on planet Earth.

Another way it might work is if the football section is divided up into the different categories of football e.g. Gaelic Football, American Football, Soccer etc. How about that?

In that case you'd have to put rugby in too as it is also football.
Just because most clubs and associations use football doesn't mean soccer isn't the widest used term. There are millions of people in non-North American English speaking countries that use soccer.

What's wrong with how it presently is?
The majority of people on this forum, I believe, are British. British people, usually, call Association Football "Football". Not "Soccer".

Re: Request to change title of "football" page to "soccer"
There is already an American football section so why does that need to be changed? I can't imagine many people wanting to discuss Gaelic football either but we have a section called other sports for that discussion, same place Ice Hockey goes for Nick, there are probably more people wanting to discuss Ice Hockey but even that hasn't got it's own section.
It hasn't been an issue since site launched so can't see why it's one now.

Can we change the hockey section to hockey and not ice hockey? It's the National Hockey League, not National ice Hockey League.

Only in the same way Football is Association Football. Only the UK leagues add the word ice to the league names.
I can't see a field hockey section to need ice to differentiate.

It's not just the NFL discussed there though. In the hockey section only NHL related stuf is posted except for that one OHL story I put up which is Ontario Hockey League, not Ontario Ice Hockey League

Sorry but you are talking tripe. Football is the widest used term globally for football. As others have demonstrated it is only a few in North America who call it soccer and they aren't exactly experts on the sport considering they have never taken it to their hearts.
Rules for football were written up in the 1850's soon to be followed by the forming of the FOOTBALL Association (or FA).
Rules for American Football weren't formulated until the late 1860's so usage of the word football was first termed by the football we know of as today. We know the US love to sue (see Apple) for copyright infringement well I say American Football is precisely guilty of that here.

I'm not arguing for the name change. I'm defending the word soccer despite football being my preference.

He's talking about football federations Nick, not a rugby player. If 45 football federations call it football then who are we to argue?
Throw in to the equation that his friend thought it was an American Football section which is clearly marked on the forum, and that Gaelic Football is not in high demand to be discussed, so the other sports is fine for that, then there is no need to change it.

My opinion on this is, that it is and always will be football so i doubt that it is going to change and i'm quite confident that the main opinion would be to keep it as football if we took a vote on it.
I completely respect the fact that some people call it Soccer and thats fine but i will always call it football because i believe thats what it should be known as.

So accept what history tells us, what the international associations involved in the sport, what the fans call the sport and the historic facts that the sport is known as football. The American version is robbing the title and trying to claim it for itself even though their rules were written up a decade after association football so they are robbing the name as well.

Re: Request to change title of "football" page to "soccer"
Don't see the need for a change as 99% of visitors will know what is meant by football.
As people have said many countries have their own versions of football and have throughout history.
However, a lot of knicker twisting going on as the rules of football (and the sport itself) are under association football, hence other countries where another version of football predominates referring to it as soccer.
