Elena Baltacha
Sadly, Elena Baltacha has died of cancer at just aged 30. She was the leading light of women's tennis in Britain for nearly a decade and retired last year after injuries. My condolences to her family at this time.

Boy, that's tough at that age. We all hope for a great deal more.
At least she lived her life doing the thing she loved; most people live a lot longer and don't get to say that.

RIP Elena, a great ambassador for tennis in the uk. I know of the family in Ipswich, it must be an awful time for them.

Wow, this is a quite a shock. I have just learned that this moment from this thread and BBC News. Really said news. I doubt her family read forums so almost seems a bit pointless to say but condolences to everyone. And perhaps Wimbledon and the BBC can line up some tribute to her career and charity awareness or something during June.
Not sure what else to say really. Rather stunned, had heard she has cancer but you know you think maybe you will beat it, or at least live on for 6 months or a few years.

Oh, just reading on, and looks like they are way ahead of me on the charity event:
A host of stars, including Andy Murray, Ross Hutchins, Martina Navratilova, Tim Henman, Greg Rusedski, Jamie Murray, Jonny Marray, Anne Keothavong and Heather Watson have agreed to take part in a fundraising event, The Rally Against Cancer - Rally For Bally, which will now be held in her memory on 15 June.
The mixed doubles exhibition matches at the Aegon Championships at Queen's Club, the Aegon Classic in Birmingham and the Aegon International in Eastbourne will raise money for Royal Marsden national cancer charity and Elena Baltacha Foundation.

Re: Elena Baltacha
Really desperately sad news. At merely 30 that is no age to go but really writing was on the wall once diagnosed as the liver is such a vital organ. Thoughts obviously go to the whole family at this sad time.
RIP Bally.

This is a particularly moving and sad death.
Only 30 years old and recently married. Diagnosed a couple of months after her retirement and dead just four months later.
I can only imagine the shock her family must be feeling right now.

Out of all the Brits Elena was my favourite as she never complained about her liver condition and to play as well as he did, with it, was quite remarkable

RIP, taken away at such a young age. I will remember a talented player who did not complain about her awful luck with injuries and was able to battle back to play at a good level several times.

Re: Elena Baltacha
Bally was a real fighter. Just think what she would have achieved as a tennis player without her chronic liver condition. Then again she apparently was never one to complain and so sad to lose someone with so much to offer.
My son had his photo taken with her a few years ago at a junior tennis evening and, yes, she really was a genuinely warm and caring person. Will be sadly missed.

It's so sad I don't know what to say.
If I add anything else it's just gonna sound like I'm ranting at the world or whoever.

Cholangiocarcinoma prognosis is absolutely dire. At least her family will hopeful have been given an honest prognosis and she and they could prepare as best as possible, horrible though that is
