America's dislike for Wlad. - Page 2 Empty America's dislike for Wlad.

Post by ONETWOFOREVER Wed 14 May - 13:58

First topic message reminder :

Was watching the Stervine v Arreola fight yesterday and was amazed at the level of veiled abuse aimed at heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitscko. This was by no means a classic confrontation but both (especially Arreola) put up a decent effort worthy of a heavyweight title fight. Statements such as ''At last a heavyweight contest to be proud of'' was being thrown around as if us fans did not understand what EXACTLY they were banging on about.

Do you think its fair?

with Wlad nearing the end of his career how do you think the yanks will remeber him....if they do?

Its clear Wlad is not respected but with America still holding major influence do you think his legacy will be harmed......where it counts?

Not sure how the Castillo fight stalled his career, could you explain the reasoning behind that?

Floyd only hit the big time when he fought Oscar.

Prior to the Castillo fight Pretty Boy Floyd (as he was known back then) was seen as an untouchable excellent boxer. After the Castillo fight ,where he ran for 12 rounds before being gifted a decision, he was seen as boring and not that good which was a pretty poor combination for marketing purposes.

Not sure that's quite true and seems to be an argument fitted around an agenda and in complete denial of the immediate rematch.

People should watch Mayweather v Agustus.

After watching that fight you will realise how special a talent v Floyd is.

Augustus was an underrated fighter. Probably gave Floyd his toughest night in those earlier years.

In the rematch he basically ran for 12 rounds. It was hardly endearing to the public especially after PBF had made up a load of excuses for the first performance. It was a real step back for him in popularity terms, one that he didn't recover from until the Gatti fight years later.

What agenda would that be?

Not sure how anyone could have the gall to accuse a guy with a log in name "Mayweather's cellmate" of not being objective...

Mayweather was relegated to the undercard of a Klitschko (I forget who) fight for Castillo II, so make of that what you will.

Cheers for that kingraf. I think that's point proven regards Mayweather's popularity back then, the Castillo rematch really was no big deal.

So after stating that Mayweather is quite possibly the GOAT you think I have an agenda against him???.

There are some on here whose opinions are so polarised that any debate ends up like some sort of school yard argument.

Objectivity is the key word. If no one can give me a single example of an exciting fight Mayweather was in then, objectively, you'd have to admit he was boring.

You have to take into account that the heavyweight division was still hot property back in 03 while Lewis was still around with Wlad being heir apparent. Very rarely have the big men played second fiddle to the little men.

Wlad is a boring boxer but a very effective boxer, for me he is in the top 15 of all time, initially had him in top 10 but moved him down the list after watching his fights against Haye and Corrie Sanders, i would rather rate Vitali in top 10 ahead of him.

Lack of opponents killed the era not Klitschkos killing it, we needed some body like Sanders, Rehmans etc,. to pull of surprise wins, but sadly all we got is Haye and co, Haye is a very good boxer but certainly not a good a heavyweight he is one of best cruiser weights thou.

He did pull off a surprise win over Wlad.

Truth is if you're not American you're never going to be a massive star at HW. Take Lewis for example, got absolutely no credit when he was champ. Imagine if Vitali was American. Talk about the big white hope - he'd have been the biggest star in the history of sport.
