Caterham F1 for sale.
Tony Fernandes has hinted at quitting the sport thus the team being put up for sale.
Will Buxton a journalist has said the following statements;
Crumbs. Rumour mill in full flow over Caterham today. Usually impeccable source reckons it's about to be bought by a very familiar name.
All I'll say is that, if true, I don't imagine they'll be getting their hands on Mercedes engines anytime soon.
So who could it be if this is indeed true??
BMW? Toyota? Honda?? Audi/VW/Porsche?

Re: Caterham F1 for sale.
Whoever is buying Caterham is mad, therefore, I can't get excited about whoever is taking over.
Audi & Toyota are focused on endurance racing, no chance of getting into F1. The 'tweet' suggests they need an engine supplier, otherwise, they would build their own. Also, suggests they are a rival to Mercedes. So it can't be Honda but could be BMW.
Announcement soon....

It would be exciting if it were a automobile company taking over the team and would suggest more stability for the team. I just wonder whether it may be Renault looking to get involved again? Porsche is a big marque name so that would be exciting.

Re: Caterham F1 for sale.
Well if it is Porsche could we see Mark Webber lead the team?
Oh and and when do you think the announcement will be?

Re: Caterham F1 for sale.
Reports are saying it could come in the next few days as one report suggests a deal has already been done. One report I read suggest it to be an ex-F1 team such as Midland or Spyker who have done the deal which would be more likely than Porsche I must say.

That's quite interesting. I'm still hoping the team that has bought Caterham if true is a new manufacturer or a returning one.

Re: Caterham F1 for sale.
I can't find those other reports but know Fernandez said on his Twitter account that the team (or interested parties) in talks to take over Caterham was NOT the Haas Team or the Colin Kolles (former HRT boss) who is looking to start a Romanian F1 team.

Re: Caterham F1 for sale.
A Swiss-Middle Eastern consortium is understood to be behind the takeover of Caterham F1, in a deal that will be confirmed in the coming days.
It’s believed that the consortium members, including interests from Dubai, intend to keep a low profile. The deal was brokered by a former F1 insider who will retain a role as an advisor.
Personally i suspect it may be Aabar who used to own a bit of Mercedes.

Didn't know Mercedes accepted I.O.Us.
I'm off to the nearest Merc dealership tomorrow then.

Well at least it keeps the Caterham employees in a job. I would say the team name, which is said will remain in place, may change at the end of the season but we shall see.

I doubt someone else will be racing under the Caterham name beyond this season.

The only provisio I see Caterham name staying on the team into next season is if the new owners sees merit in retaining it for recognition as a brand rather than slapping a new name (of their choosing) on the team which is unlikely to have any connection to motorsport.

Lotus probably know going to Mercedes engines is only way of keeping Grosjean for next year.

Caterham are up in the air, RB are threatening to walk, TR would follow, Lotus seemingly on the way out. Dire straights for Renault, hard to convince the new teams to use Renault with their performance.

Colin Kolles and a consortium of Swiss and Middle Eastern investors have bought the team.

Re: Caterham F1 for sale.
You would imagine so. Makes little sense to remain as Caterham with no affiliation to the company.

Re: Caterham F1 for sale.
Yeah thought so guess that will happen from next season onwards as I think you can't change your team name mid season right?
Oh and hopefully this new team gets a better engine supplier as Renault haven't been great.

I am not so sure it will. The affiliation with the team comes through using the same base and staff. Caterham is a name known in motor sport so the new owners may see that as a benefit. On the other side of the coin it depends on what the motives are for taking over the team. They may feel the need/wish to change it to something with the new owners brand name involved though. We shall see.
