Not a late April fools!
Joe Marler is to be the Harlequins club captain for 2014/15.
Here's what the club say:
England prop Joe Marler will captain Harlequins for the 2014-15 season replacing Chris Robshaw in the role.
Robshaw has captained Harlequins for the past four seasons but Conor O'Shea felt the time was right to relieve some of the pressures of being captain of both club and country. With the World Cup just over a year away, he has opted to give the captaincy of Harlequins to Marler.
"I am delighted that Joe has agreed to take over the captaincy from Chris," Harlequins boss O'Shea said. "He is a massively influential player and person within the group and will bring his own personality and style to the role, with the full backing of the entire squad and management. It is hard to believe that at just 24, Joe has already played over 100 times for the club and become a cornerstone of the England pack.
"With regards to Chris, I have been speaking to him about the dual role of captaining both England and Harlequins for some time. He has a massive year ahead of him and I feel that we should relieve him of some of the pressure, which will allow him to focus on being at his best for both club and country.
"We are extremely grateful to Chris for the four seasons that he captained the club, of which three were spent captaining both Harlequins and England. We want him to be at his best for Harlequins, win trophies here and also lift the World Cup next year. To do so we believe he needs to be fresh both mentally and physically, hence why we have made this decision now."
Marler, 24, will be one of the youngest club captains in Premiership history but despite his relatively tender years, he has already made over 100 appearances for Harlequins alongside his 22 England caps.
"Firstly I want to pay tribute to how well Chris has done over the last four years, leading us through the most successful period we have had as a club," Marler said. "It will be good to be able to take the pressure off him as he heads into a huge year with England. I'm really honoured to be asked to lead a special group like this and a great club, and I can't wait to get stuck in!"
Congratulations to @JoeMarler - the start of a hugely exciting chapter for both Joe and the club

And of course thanks to @ChrisRobshaw for his service over 4 hugely successful years. A big 15 months ahead for him for club and country

Perhaps he'd watched Sam Warburton's red and was thinking it would enhance his Lions prospects.
It wasn't the ideal way to start his captaincy but it was a clumsy tackle rather than losing his rag. It was a two-on-one tackle, and I'm pretty sure he thought Robson had wrapped up man and ball, so he was lifting the leg to complete the tackle, but Robson didn't have a firm grip and the player dropped to the ground.

Agree with your assessment there Poorfour. It didn't look malicious or particularly aggressive and was the sort of card anyone could have picked up.
What I did feel watching the game though, was that it was still Robshaw and to an extent Easter who were leading the side. Marler may be captain, but those guys were the ones who lead you through a few tough periods in the game.

Thanks Ozzy - it's nice to know it's not just my quartered specs seeing it that way.
The truth of captaincy is that no great team has only one leader. It took Robshaw about half a season to learn that - he took too much on himself and it was only when Easter took him aside and told him that there were others who could and would share the responsibility that it clicked. I think Joe is possibly going too far in the opposite direction - he's surrounded by Quins' most capped player, their most successful skipper (and the current England captain), Rugby's Angriest Man (tm), one of the best 10s in Europe and Danny Care - and he hasn't yet stamped his authority on the side. Not surprising really, but I think it will click before too long.
Which said, I expect that Easter's personal performances will drag Quins through more than a few tough patches this season. I think he knows that his chances of a last hurrah with England are slim - but by the same token England have no other experienced No 8s beyond Billy V and Morgan. He knows that he's one injury from serious consideration and he looks to me like he's going to do his damnedest to make his case.

As much as I rate Easter I don't think he'll ever pull on the Red Rose again, no matter how desperate England get.

I suspect Easter is happy playing well for Quins - without all the England ambition.

It didn't happen then because Lancaster was at the start of the RWC cycle and determined to develop his young squad. Turning to Easter wouldn't have fit with that.
But we're now a year away from the RWC with only two senior specialist 8s. I think he learned from Cardiff that you need a specialist, and I think he will be keenly aware that if one of his two first choices gets injured he has an experienced 8 in storming form just over the road.
If Bill or Ben pick up an injury for the AIs or 6N, he will probably take a look at Ewers or someone similar. If they pick one up late in the season, I think it will be Easter. It's a (very) long shot, but I think Easter knows it's a possibility and it's part of his motivation.

If Bill or Ben get injured he'll pick Haskell at 8.
Easter is a very good club-man but it would take a disaster for him to be selected by SL.

Robson didn't help the cause coming in halfway through Marler's tackle, but still it was definitely a yellow. As Marler said when he received it, a yellow was fair.

In your first game as captain, it's almost inevitable that the current England captain might overshadow you. Especially as Easter and Robshaw are lead by example types and their example is gonna be there whether they are captain or not
