Boxing Journey men
Afternoon all,
Good piece on the BBC website about journey men.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/boxing/29520846
Like the articles says, we need guys like this for boxing to survive. So lets not kick the 'tin cans' too much.
Cheers

Don't mind tin cans that try to win..
Just don't like Boxing prostitutes that offer their bodies for cash..
Nothing against real prostitutes or 50% of Wags though...

Re: Boxing Journey men
Is Greaves really trying to justify losing on purpose by saying he is really just teaching the prospects tricks by punching them in the "spuds" hitting them with shoulders etc?? That's hardly what a competitive fight is about. Going easy on them and losing on purpose.
Why doesn't he become a trainer if he's such a wealth of knowledge.

I have to say its fair enough any boxer deserves respect for getying in the ring however losing on purpose is a crime

I haven't had chance to read the full article but from what I gathered on the first half he is basically admitting that if your fighting a prospect you are encouraged to be a punchbag. Just goes to show how fickle this sport can be. While I admire the honesty of this article it doesn't really do the sport of boxing any favours at all

Rubbish.... guys like Greaves and Buckley are the lifesblood of the sport. Buckley was stopped by Hamed in their second fight and even Hamed was disgusted with the ref's decision. Yes, they're there to make the ticket seller/local boy "look good" but a decent journeyman can also provide a promoter with invaluable feedback about a prospect re certain vulnerabilities.
Buckley would use a wealth of experience to mess prospects around to see if they were able to box smart and be adaptable or if they lost their heads. One of his favourite tricks was to deliberately tread on his opponent's foot and then hit him if he looked down at the canvas.
I remember Mark Krence stepping in at the last minute to face Matt Skelton for the British title after he'd finished working his day shift at the butchers. Skelton won by 7th round TKO and some cretin's in the audience were booing Krence at the end. Skelton got on the mike and told them to have a bit of respect for the man because without him, there wouldn't have been a fight.
Might not sound much but when you consider the money guys like Clifford Etienne got for falling over against Tyson, it makes you appreciate these guys even more.

Aah TRUSSY, you just look like a ninny now. You should know better than to tar all these journeymen with the same brush. I agree, some are there to get thumped and fall over and do nothing for the career of the prospect they're facing but there are some good guys who know the art of survival/defence as given that a KO stoppage means a month out of the game their earning potential is severely hampered.

Re: Boxing Journey men
You're implying that these guys have nothing to offer in the way of experience to these young prospects as they have their back to the ropes getting their head smacked in thus suggesting that they're all garbage whether they give it a go or not
