South Africa Captain killed
Senzo Meyiwa, 27, was shot and killed in the township of Vosloorus on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
The Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was reportedly at his girlfriend's home when the tragic shooting took place.
There are unconfirmed reports a man had tried to take his mobile phone before opening fire.
He was declared dead on arrival at hospital.
Meyiwa was in action on Saturday night as he helped his side beat Ajax Cape Town 4-1.
The 27-year-old was one of South Africa's top players and had yet to concede a goal in four African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The official account of South Africa's police service tweeted: "We can confirm that Bucs keeper Senzo Meyiwa has been shot and sadly declared dead on arrival at hospital."
International teammate Dean Furman was among the first to comment about the shocking incident.
"Beyond devastated at the loss of our captain & friend Senzo Meyiwa," he tweeted.
"Thoughts & prayers are with his family & friends at this terrible time
