How do we choose our politicians? Empty How do we choose our politicians?

Has this Nation lost its way when appointing leaders?

Seems nowadays we choose MP's based on image or what school they went to.

Obama was selected on mostly image. He looked good, he spoke well, he has a million dollor smile but look at the US and look at the world right now.

How about making decisions based on a strong moral ethic.

I can't remember why we voted in Cameron. Was it because he's an Eaton boy???

I want to see a track record of these politicians actually standing up for the people. I want to see a track record of someone who adhers to the values of truth, honesty, and equality.

I don't care where he went to school or which royal he is related to. Its obvious that for years now we have had the most corruptable people in office.

Don't think they're chosen based on what school they go to, but more it's a function of where the pool of career politicians sources its members and their educational background.

Image is definitely a major factor, think Blair really cemented that.

I would love Obama over here, his issue is America isn't/wasn't really ready for his politics. Most of the stuff he's pushing for, and taking a kicking over, is stuff we've already got or accepted here.

Is it a bit disingenuous do suggest there wasn't a moral ethic behind 'Obamacare'??

Cameron was only voted in by a whisker, and his image was a negative, as was his Eton connection. Tories came in as people were tired of Labour after almost 15 years and couldn't get behind Brown and/or a continuation of the status quo - hence why Tory & LD got the majority of the votes. The fact Labour weren't whitewashed was testament to voters not being in love with DC/Tories.

With respect 1-2, your hopes for politicians' morals/motivations is at odds with the reality of the political system, at least here in Ireland anyway. If a politician's top priorities are truth, honesty and equality I wouldn't expect them to go very far.

Very true.

Which is why I am suspicious about most MP's.

Always liked the late Tony Benn but he never rose through the ranks as it were. I presume its because he was not up to selling out as much as others.

He might have come across that way Topy but he was a well liked MP who truly wanted to represent those he worked for. Compare him to TERROResa May who I can't stand.

I pick the one who's mouth moves the least. That means they aren't lying as much.
