Week 4 Results - By Your Homie Miky.
Tactics will be posted tonight at home as I am only on phone access at the moment and it will be quicker to do it there.
Bordeaux 2 vs 0 Verona – Bordeaux default win as there were no tactics from Verona.
Basel 0 v 1 Montpellier
(Bellarabi)
Basel prepared very well for a tough game against a strong Montpellier Side however Basel are able to get their game going in short spells with some chances early on but Montpellier are just too strong with the pair of Clasie and Pirlo controlling the midfield and keeping things ticking over which eventually leads to Montpellier getting a goal through Bellarabi who cuts inside on the edge of the box and curls one into the top corner.
PAOK 1 v 1 Granada
(Mandzukic) (Sanchez)
PAOK get at Granada well in the early stages and manage to get a goal through Mandzukic when he manages to make an early run into the box to slot one in. When possession turns over late on in the match, it leads to Granada getting forward extremely quickly leaving Clyne and Bernat out of position down the wings due to them pushing forward. The immediate blitz attack style from Azzy really shows here and the pressure gets too much for PAOK which allows Xavi to play a beautifully weighted pass through to Sanchez in which he manages to get in behind and slot home for the Equaliser.
Twente 0 v 0 Genk
An extremely even game making it a tough one to call with Genk having Schweinsteiger and Mason to protect the defense and Trebs opting to not allow Rakitic time on the ball which ultimately will make it difficult for him to get forward to support the attacks as instructed by Hero. Hazard has been instructed by Hero to get at the full backs and cut inside which plays to his strengths and is a huge part of his game however Trebs has instructed his full backs well to stand off and look to show him the outside rather than allow him to cut inside, this ends up being a very entertaining 0-0 draw with 2 quality sides battling it out.

Attacking Tactics

Bordeaux 2 vs 0 Verona – Bordeaux default win as there were no tactics from Verona.
- Basel:
- -----------------------------Casillas-------------------------
---De Sciglio------Knoche------------BMI---Pocognoli----
------------------------------Blind--------------------------
------------------Illaramendi----Grenier-------------------
----Refaelov-----------------------------------Depay------
----------------------------Adriano-------------------------
Subs: Salvi, Umana, Eboue, Safari, Sinkgraven, Kuyt, Adebayor.
Casillas uses his experience to organise the defence and be his shot stopping self. Knoche marks the CF, sticks tight to him, doesn't allow him space to turn with BMI covering in behind. Knoche goes to close down to CF and BMI sits in behind for any runners and communicates with Casillas. De Sciglio and Pocogoli tuck in like CB's alongside Knoche, closing down opponents. They go out to their wide man if it goes out wide, the other one tucks in, funnelling the play out wide and forcing them back for long shots from midfield at best.
Blind sticks to the attacking midfielder at all times and Illaramendi drops into DM (without possession) to double up on the attacking midfielder so he doesn't have space. (With possession) Blind drops into CB allowing De Sciglio and Pocognoli to advance forward and run beyond the wingers. Illaramendi sticks to DM/CM with the ball and looks to play the pin point passes out wide, be positive on the ball and take a chance with raking balls over the top, into Adriano's feet or supplied out wide to the full backs. Grenier advances forward when we have the ball and looks to support Adriano by running from deep positions. Without the ball, he goes and closes down the men in possession, giving them no time to shoot or pick out a pass.
Refaelov and Depay hug the touchline forcing the full backs to stretch or give them space in wide areas. If they get the ball, they need to dribble inside at be direct at goal, leaving the space out wide for full backs bombing on. If the ball get played out to Refaelov, Depay comes inside as an AM for support to Adriano and the full back bombing on down his side and vice versa. Crosses with quality, shoot from distance if they have to and look to get in behind the defence by running beyond Adriano.
Adriano looks to link up with Grenier when he is in support and looks top play neat little one-two's with the players in behind him so he can spin off his marker and get in behind the defender. Use his body to get across his man from crosses and get a header at goal. Be direct at run at the defence is he has the chance to turn and sprint. Be clinical when in front of goal and fire them in.
Subs (If winning) 70 mins:
Sinkgraven for Grenier - Still in CM, fresh pair of legs to keep closing down quickly
Adebayor for Adriano - Fresh legs up top, be clinical when in the box
Umana for Blind - Illaramendi in DM, Umana goes into CB, keep it tight
Subs (If drawing) 70 mins:
Sinkgraven for Grenier - Go into AM, fresh legs on a tired midfielder, close down quickly and link up with Adriano
Kuyt for Refaelov - Fresh legs out wide, run at a tired full back
Subs (If losing) 70 mins:
Adebayor for Blind - Go to 4-4-2 with Illaramendi sitting and Grenier in AM with the wingers still wide
Kuty for Refaelov - Go wide/up front at times to create a 3, run at the tired defence
- Montpellier:
- MONTPELLIER v Basel
Injuries: Fonte, Eto'o, Barrow
---------------Frey
Yedlin - Manolas - Howedes - Willems
------------Clasie - Pirlo
---Bellarabi - Barkley - Lavezzi
--------------Torres
Subs: Speroni, Flanagan, Campagnaro, Motta, Sigurdsson, Bakkali, Solanke
Tough game today against Basel, they have some exceptional players but we have the midfield pairing and attack to cause them real problems. Clasie and Pirlo can dictate possession in the middle of the park, while Bellarabi and Lavezzi can target Basel's fullbacks with their pace. I've gone with Torres upfront as he seems to have recaptured his natural form, use your pace to make runs in behind for Clasie and Pirlo to look for the ball over the top, use your pace against Basel's CB's.
Defence: Frey to stay big for one on ones and distribute to Clasie/Pirlo. Howedes to track their striker, beat him to any passes towards him and force him to drop deeper to frustrate him, Manolas to be the first to any second balls. If they play a second striker, Manolas to mark him and Clasie to track any AM. In possession supply Clasie/Pirlo. Yedlin and Willems to overlap the wingers going forward and get crosses into Torres. Make sure you get back into position ASAP to avoid being caught out. Defensively force their wingers wide and block the crosses. Don't let them cut inside.
Midfield: Clasie/Pirlo sit infront of the back four, get the ball and look to supply the front four. Bellarabi and Lavezzi will play wide so they are able to switch from playing alongside Barkley when we're attacking but drop and form a midfield four with Pirlo and Clasie when defending. Utilise Yedlin and Willems overlapping and use them to play them down the wing or use the space to cut inside. Barkley to play as our AM, drift left and right and deeper to drag their DM out of position and look to supply Torres with plenty of opportunities. Bellarabi and Lavezzi as the wingers, both pick up the ball wide and cut inside to leave space for the overlapping fullback, shoot or create when in advanced positions.
Attack: Torres to mark the deepest Basel defender, use your pace and positioning to worry their defenders, drift wide to drag defenders with you, to allow Barkley/Bellarabi/Lavezzi to make runs down the middle into space for Clasie/Pirlo to pick them out. You more than capable of scoring and assisting, so get shots in where you can and look for your teammate in a better position. Switch positions on occasion to keep the Basel players guessing and drag them out of position.
Subs 70 mins:
If winning: Barkley off, Motta on. Switch to 4-5-1 with Motta playing at CM alongside Clasie and Pirlo, and forming a midfield three, Bellarabi/Lavezzi to wide midfield. Absorb pressure then look for Torres on the counter.
-------------------Frey
--Yedlin - Manolas - Howedes - Willems
Bellarabi - Clasie - Pirlo - Motta - Lavezzi
------------------Torres
If drawing: No change, but push for the winner.
If losing: Willems and Clasie off, Sigurdsson and Solanke on. Change to 3-1-4-2; Push for goals.
--------------------Frey
-------Yedlin - Manolas - Howedes
-------------------Pirlo
Bellarabi - Barkley - Sigurdsson - Lavezzi

Team Talk: Up against Granada, I want us to play on the front foot today. The wing backs to position themselves in Granada half forcing their wingers backwards. I want us to focus on their midfield which I feel is a little slow and take advantage forcing them into mistakes.
Jacobo
Command your area, always communicate with defence try to catch ball and keep punching limited unless you must. Hit the ball long to Mandzukic.
Stones, Barzagli & Ogbonna
Barzagli to pick up thier main striker do not let him settle on the ball force him away from goal. Stones to cover the right side blocking the winger if he tries to come inside, Ogbonna to do the same on the left. I want them to cover Barzagli if he gets beat.
Matic, Meyer & Guarin
Matic role is to shield the defence keep them protected by using your physical powers, get tackles in and put them under pressure when they come into our half, keep distribution simple look for midfielders or if we can hit on the break then pass the wing backs. Meyer & Guarin will take turns in defending and attacking, help Matic by keeping tabs on any free midfielder follow thier runs and close them. When getting forward use your dribbling skills and passes to get us on the attack
Clyne & Bernat
Play on the front foot force their wingers back, when you're attacking stay out wide and get balls into the box for our attackers. When defending show the winger the outside if he does come inside Stones or Ogbonna will mop up forcing the winner back.
Mandzukic & Menez
Mandzukic play as the centre forward and Menez to play off him making runs. Menez use your extreme pace turn at the defenders and run at them making them commit into positions they don't want to which opens them up,mix it up come deep or go long depending on the situation. Mandzukic look for space to attack, play as the predator making the early runs to catch them unaware.
- Granada:
- Granada starting lineup:
--------------- Buffon ------------------
Ivanovic - Vlaar - Alderweireld – Durm
----------- Xavi ---- Coquelin
Sanchez -------------------------- Ljajic
------------- Kane ---- Ings
Subs: Stekelenburg, Fabinho, Jedvaj, Kehl, Fletcher, di Natale, Zivkovic
Injuries: Morgan Sanson, Abdelhamdi El Kaoutari, Demarai Gray
General:
We had a good result last week so I want you to go out today and grab all three points this time out. Our opponents PAOK are a good team but we have a tough defence and a dynamic attack – I want to see you working hard, getting into good positions both defensively and offensively, and talking to each other to drive each other on. We will play a high pressing game to hustle the ball from PAOK and launch our attacks quickly being much closer to their goal – close your man down, win the ball and make your move!
Defensive Tactics:
- Mandzukic is the likely striker today – I want Vlaar to sit on him and negate him entirely. Use your strength to shepherd him, niggle at him, pinch his bum to distract him, do whatever it takes to get inside his head and put him off his game. Alderweireld will cover next to you and step up to tackle attackers if necessary.
- Ivanovic is to get stuck into his winger early and often, never let him settle on the ball. Durm to take care of the other winger in similar, physical fashion. Always keep your man on the outside at all times.
- Coquelin and Xavi will sit ahead of the defence patrolling, and ensuring that the opposition CMs have no time on the ball.
- Kane and Ings have boundless energy so I want you both to harass the PAOK defence, force them into mistakes nearer to their goal. Both can cross a ball well so if you get the ball out wide, look for your partner in the middle.
Attacking Tactics:
- Xavi to orchestrate moves from deep. Search for Sanchez, Ljajic, Kane or Ings who are all expected to surge ahead when we win the ball, putting the PAOK defence under pressure in an instant.
- Sanchez and Ljajic are to muzzle the FBs by not sitting back – we are playing a high pressing game and if you are poised to break, the FB can’t get forward. Obviously if one does try the overlap, come back to assist the CM and your own FB, but the main focus is on getting into space to blitz PAOK when we win the ball. Then either break onto goal yourself, or if they are free, put a ball into the box for Kane or Ings to nod in.
- Kane and Ings to play leading roles, swap between CBs on a regular bass to shake off their marking, then use your strength and pace to slip past them and through on goal. Crosses into the box will be thick and fast – get ahead of your man and get a header on goal!
Sub:
If losing on 80 minutes: di Natale on for Xavi. FBs to overlap, play direct to the strikers and overload the box with late runs from midfield.
------------------ Buffon ------------------
Ivanovic ---- Vlaar - Alderweireld – Durm
---- Sanchez -- Coquelin - Ljajic
---- di Natale --- Kane -- Ings
- Twente:
- -----------------Rafael---------
Rafinha---Pepe---Subotic---Gibbs
------------Rakitic---McCarthy----
Diao-----------Suarez--------Hazard
----------------Tevez-----------
Treb's team will be a very tough test for us but if we stick to our natural game we should be able to get the win. Keep the ball to feet with swift short passes, retaining possession, constant movement to exploit spaces and punish when it counts.
Rafael - command your area, stay big for one on ones and distribute to the fullbacks or midfielders.
Pepe/Subotic - Pepe to mark their striker, use your strength to position yourself to the ball ahead of him. Subotic to be the spare man who gets to the second ball first, unless they play two strikers in which case both man mark.
Gibbs/Rafinha - Force their wingers out wide, don't let them cut inside and block any crosses at source. In possession get forward and support our wingers, offer them the overlap and get crosses into the box. Track back ASAP to prevent us being countered.
McCarthy/Rakitic - McCarthy without the ball sit and break up play, get stuck in and frustrate their midfielders, but with the ball look to create opportunities for your teammates. Rakitic the box to box man, with licence to get forward, support the attack but help McCarthy out defensively when under pressure. Shoot when the opportunity arises.
Diao/Hazard - Use your pace to get at the fullbacks, cut inside with your fullback overlapping and either supply them or pass or shoot infield. Link with Tevez and Suarez and create opportunities for yourself and others.
Suarez/Tevez - Suarez AM, link the play between Tevez, Hazard, Diao and the midfielders and fullbacks. Shoot when you get the chance but look for Tevez making runs and slip the ball in behind the defence. Tevez to stay on the shoulder of the last defender. Look for low crosses coming in and direct them on goal. Both of you to work hard without the ball to close down defenders/midfielders.
- Genk:
- DE SANCTIS
CACERES DIER CHIELLINI DIGNE
SCHWEINSTEIGER MASON
HONDA TADIC SON
LACAZETTE
BENCH

TACTICS
I'm feeling rough but you boys will do me proad. To get at least a point is imperative but I'm confident we can win this game.
We need high energy from Schweinsteiger and Mason to protect the defense, in particular Rakitic must not be allowed time on the ball. If he plays higher up, then one of the DMs needs to get tight, not allowing him time. If he drops deep, then I want Tadic to stick tight to him. Hazard could play either side and I want the full back he's up against to stay back, at all times, match him for pace and force him wide, we have quick full backs and their one job is to jockey him wide. Dier should man-mark Tevez, who will most likely be a lone striker, with Chiellini covering in behind and generally looking to be our leader at the back.
Getting forward, we should hit them quickly. Subotic in particular isn't the quickest and we can exploit that, Lacazette should run at him. I want Son and Honda to get narrow, swap positions with Tadic to be impossible to pick up. Their full backs are good offensively but not the best defensively. Schweinsteiger should play in a box to box role, drive forward with Mason a little more defensive.
SUBSTITUTIONS
If winning, Lampard for Honda, extra midfielder, 4-3-3 to close the game.
If drawing, Ibra for one of the three AMs, move to a 4-4-2 and look to be more direct to score the winner.
If losing, Ibra and Lampard for Mason and Digne, move to three at the back, two upfront in a 3-5-2.
