Re: your favourite 3 players at your club, past or present
Very true Stella, but a stalwart of the Pompey teams, Best Team of the Forties and thru the mid-fifties. Downhill from there.
Think I'm correct in saying that only Billy Wright, Finney and Matthews had played more often for England when Jimmy Dick came to the end of his run, yet the morons who run the Hall Of Fame seem to discount such sustained excellence.

You aren't much younger than me and I have good memories of the late 90s/early 00s squad. I could add Di Matteo, Hasselbaink and Poyet as my next three. Desailly close and I did like Gronkjaer, probably more so retrospectively as he scored the goal that clinched UCL, saved the club a Poopie ton of debt and ultimately attracted Roman.

Don't get me wrong I know that they were around when I was able to watch I guess I just went with who I have watched more but like I said i am aware of all the players mentioned and realise how good they were for us.

How dare anyone question the great Mikey? He's the only person I know who thinks Ray Wilkins has an X in it

I could probably name a favourite three players of every club in the premier league without having to even look at squads, there's not a club that I haven't liked players at

Started then accidentally exited tab
Arsenal: Henry, Bergkamp, Seaman
Aston Villa: Dalian Atkinson, Alan Wright, Yorke
Burnley: Eagles, Big Brian Jensen, Trippier
Chelsea: Zola, Jimmy Floyd, Cudicini
Crystal Palace: Johnson, Kiraly, Wright (doesnt really count, but I always liked Ian so I'll throw him in even though I don't have a memory of watching football when he played for them)
Everton: Pienaar, Dunc, Unsworth
Hull: Geovanni, Garcia, Bullard
Leicester: Impey, Guppy, Flowers
Liverpool: Owen, Berger, Alonso
Man City: Tevez, Rosler, Silva
Man United: Keane, Scholes, Giggs
Newcastle: Asprilla, Given, Beardsley
QPR: Sinclair, Green, Sir Les
Southampton: Pahars, Bridge, Egil!
Stoke: Crouchy, Begovic (just seems a cracking bloke), Bojan
Sunderland: Phillips, Quinn, Fletcher
Swansea: Ki, Britton, Michu
Tottenham: Parker, Carrick, Zamora (What? Their only good ones have been West Ham boys!)
West Brom: Gera, Wallwork, Darren Moore
Probably. Am I the only one who can never list all 20 clubs in the Prem without checking? I miss about 2 or 3 every time

Good choice for the Villa.
Dalien Atkinson was class and a top charachter.
Loved little Alan Wright, his goal away to Boro was quality.
Yorkie, never a big fan of his as such, was always going to go to a club like Utd.

Then there are guys like Stan. Who people look up to.

Stan always seemed like a gentleman.
As a side note, a few of the older posters might appreciate this. I remember being at the Milk Cup in portrush with my Granda when I was around 8/9. He pointed to an old man standing watching the football and told me to go over and say hello and ask for his autograph. I had no idea who he was but went on ahead anyway.
Turned out it was Harry Gregg. Stood talking to me and my Granda for a bit. Nice man and glad to say I met him.

Certainly did, not a year goes by that people dont moan about how we cant replicate that partnership.
Patrik Berger is almost entirely because of a montage Sky Sports did with "because you're gorgeous" playing. Lovely left foot too.
Also, Hugo Porfirio is one hell of a pick. Surprised you didnt like Florin Raducioiu too!

The Boss,
All readers should know about Harry Gregg; pretty much a one-man rescue squad in the first minutes after the Munich crash - heroic doesn't come close to covering it.
Anyone who doesn't know his story, but is interested, should read this Telegraph piece:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/2291113/Harry-Gregg-Remember-me-as-a-footballer.html
There's a short BBC interview somewhere, but can't find it for the moment. Well worth letting your fingers do the Googling to dig it out though. Dignified man. Great footballer.

Euro 96 for me. I'd watched him play twice before then and picked him in my fantasy side, won a grand from The Sun (I think). Still the greatest tournament of my lifetime for me, and he was a big reason for it. Plus, he had fantastic hair, Hall-of-Fame worthy hair.Crimey wrote:Where has this love for Patrick Berger all of a sudden come from?

The Boss,
There's no denying the skills and abilities, occasional flashes of character, of players of today, but there were plenty of greats of the past with truly remarkable real-life stories. I always enjoy reading about them, whether they're before my time or not.
Harry Gregg close to top of the pile.

There's no denying the skills and abilities, occasional flashes of character, of players of today, but there were plenty of greats of the past with truly remarkable real-life stories. I always enjoy reading about them, whether they're before my time or not.
Harry Gregg close to top of the pile.
Kwini / The Boss,
Harry Gregg was coming to the end of his playing career when I really started following the game but still feel I can strongly second Kwini's comments about such a fine keeper and an even better man. Boss, you should treasure meeting him and your Granda for giving you the opportunity.
Kwin's comments above are spot on although it should be recognised that there are some heart breaking stories amongst the greats of the past. I can't attach on this old blackberry but have a look in particular at the tragic tale of Hughie Gallacher.
A scoring sensation in Scotland and England between the wars - any Chelsea or Newcastle fan who knows his club will have Hughie in his team. My great uncle was a journeyman professional at the same time and, years later in the 1980s, assured me that Gallacher and Best were the two greatest footballers he had ever played against or watched on the park.

Winterburn?! WINTERBURN?! Least if you're throwing an Arsenal bias in you could pick Hartson or Wright!

I'd forgotten that Big John played for the Hammers. Him and Kitson were a great partnership.

Clayton Blackmore was the Utd pick! Scholes and Keane fair enough but then of all the other greats over the years Clayton Blackmore does not spring to mind!

As you probably gathered, it was a slightly tounge in cheek pick Hero! Mainly chose him as one of my mates used to pretend to be Blackmore when we played football after school.

So why are people getting pilloried for picking obscure players? I forgot Clayton Blackmore ever existed until I saw his name here

Yes! His impersonation mainly consisted of him attempting to toe punt the ball home from long range with his left foot.Stella wrote:Nakatomi Plaza wrote:As you probably gathered, it was a slightly tounge in cheek pick Hero! I was only jesting about Blackmore, though it's a strange choice.
