How to get rid of the gut
Ive been training for a while now and whilst my shoulders chest biceps look okay they'd look a whole lot better if I had a flat stomach

Flat stomachs are made in the kitchen, not the gym!

I've always struggled to have washboard abs. Lots to be said about diet (I literally live on chicken wings ).

Re: How to get rid of the gut
I've cut carbs out from today, done it before I end up before, just become grumpy, more so than usual. But diet is the most important thing if you want abs.

So true, eat clean get lean.
@Hampo
Is cutting out the carbs really the answer? Lets say you cut the carbs out, lower your body, get the 6 pack what then? Do you never eat carbs again? I don't believe that this is a good idea long term.
Since the beginning of the year I have been cycling between 12k and 40k 6 days a week, i have also been eating clean, no take aways, chocolate ect, lots of fruit and veg and my weight has dropped as has my body fat. I eat a high carb diet, lots of rice and potato's but little gluten, this seems to be working and is sustainable long term. Google plant based athletes you might be surprised or find something of interest. There are a lot of people that find animal based proteins can hinder losing body fat and make you look a little puffy.
I'm going to post a link to something I read last night, admittedly its aimed at endurance athletes, but its quite interesting especially as their is so much out there at the moment about low carb diets.

Re: How to get rid of the gut
I'd never cut carbs out....never !!.......Give you energy.......
You'll feel like crap.....
It's great to eat clean all the time but very hard and boring and can lead to dis-illusionment..............My advice is to up your workout schedule instead.......
You'll work your excesses off !! Try Squats........I got better abs by squating heavy than I did doing crunches and the like.........
Stay positive...and don't keep thinking about the gym or your gut.......The best bodybuilders compartmentalise there work and have a good life/workout balance...
That way you stay focused and don't overthink !!
keep life simple..

You do get grumpy Truss, but I've never found myself lacking energy. Maybe it's just down to you being an old timer

Re: How to get rid of the gut
For me eating clean isn't a problem and after the first month you don't have the cravings for crap. Admittedly the only time I do is when I don't eat enough carbs! But I do have a cheat day per week which is also good to kick start the metabolism and is nice to have that 'fat' feeling.
@Hampo
When you say cutting out the carbs do you just mean starch based carbs or fruit, veg & pulses as well? Seems the low carb diet is very popular at the moment but it does confuse me a bit, especially when people talk about losing belly fat/getting a 6 pack. You say you've done it before but now you are doing it again, what made you stop & why are you starting again? As I said it seems to be very popular at the moment but generally speaking pro athletes don't go down this route, check out what Usain Bolt & Yohan Blake eat, far from low carb and world class athletes in great shape.

Re: How to get rid of the gut
I keep my veg mate, but no rice, pasta etc. Only worth doing once you've got everything on point. I find carb cycling works well, still gives you the boost of energy.

Excellent point, so many people look to go down the low carb route without seeming to have much idea about nutrition or what they are doing wrong in there diet.
I don't know that much about carb cycling but it seems just that, cycling on and off the carbs, read a little bit recently and saw some vids on youtube. So I take it you are not a bodybuilder? More training to keep in shape with low body fat?

Re: How to get rid of the gut
Not a body builder no mate, training to be a PT specialising in obesity and diabieties so really reading up on my nutrition. Yeah basically carb cycling is just rotating daily between high and low carb days. Simple to do, and you can get enough seasonings to keep the food interesting.
I order flavourings from flavour god online, and condiments from Walden Farms. Great stuff.

Re: How to get rid of the gut
Well the way we eat is what makes us the way we are for better or for worse and unfortunately obesity & diabieties are just on the increase and the health authorities just don't seem to do enough in the right direction, to many drugs being prescribed instead. Have you read 'The Starch Solution' or 'The China Study'? The 1st is more to do with reversing diabeitis through diet than the 2nd. Not read either myself but am interested. What does the PT stand for, personal trainer or soem form of therapist? Good luck with your studies and of course the 6 pack
