Promoter Rips In To Solis.
By Paul Hampton.
Last night Cuban Heavyweight Orlandier Solis suffered a second consecutive defeat to Tony "The Tiger" Thompson, after he quit at the end of the 9th round. Solis was behind on two of the three cards, the other was level at the time. He has now lost three of his last six fights, and finds his career in tatters, and too really rub salt in to the wounds it looked as if he hadn't trained for this fight weighing in at 272lbs.
If Solis wasn't feeling sorry for himself after the poor showing, his promoter certainly made it clear how he felt. "I have wasted a lot of time, nerves and money on Solis. He has all the talent in the world but he just blew it", said Oner.
"I cannot believe how bad he looked today. He is a shame for Cuban boxing. The guy is done. And I'm done with him. He's still under contract with me but today he made the step from contender to journey man. I will throw him to the wolves and feed every young and hungry prospect with him who is ready to pay some money."
So while it looks like Solis will now be a stepping stone for future prospects, Thompson continues to defy the odds and collect wins when he is well past his prime, and it looks likely he'll face Manuel Charr in his next fight. Oner was full of praise for the big American.
"There are some guys up there constantly looking for trouble and I think Tony still is a serious threat to numerous contenders. I don't know what Manuel Charr has lined up but he keeps on calling out everybody. That might be an interesting option. We'll see what's next," added Oner.

Re: Promoter Rips In To Solis.
I was just about to put an article up about this myself.
Again, Tony shows the wipper snappers how to be a pro but Solis? Does he actually want to be a boxer?
Is this the end for him at the highest level?
What a waste of talent!

Agree wtih everything he said
Utlra talented fighter in a division lacking talent but enjoy the pies to much was not much bigger than 6ft and only weighed under 250lbs once or twice in his career given when he was a amateur he weighed about 200
Oner said hes a journeyman and will feed him to young fighters put him in with joshua next so then joshua can fight thompson next,.decent progession imo

Re: Promoter Rips In To Solis.
We spend a lot of time discussing how shark-like promoters rip off poor fighters. I guess this is the other side of the coin.
Hard not to agree with the guy... 272 pounds for solis is a disgrace.
I suspect a lot of promoters feel similarly about some of their fighters from time to time but don't generally air that view... As they're always hoping to get another big pay day out of them. I guess this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

Re: Promoter Rips In To Solis.
Oner is right, it reflects so badly on Solis.
He's already lost to Thompson so this was a chance at redemption. If you can't get yourself motivated to neutralise your losses you are lacking the drive and desire to be a boxer. And that's before we even get onto lacking professionalism.
Its such a waste of talent. We criticise Audley for being a waste of talent but his issue was purely psychological. He simply didn't have it. Its an even greater waste to see a boxer with all the talent and no desire.
I'd be surprised if Solis remains in boxing much longer.

Happy... Like a lot of them he may not have a lot of choice. He's going to be 'fed to young prospects' and at 272lbs that's a lot of eating.

True, as you say he needs to put food on the table... and at 272lb, that is a lot of feeding!

I'm sure that is one of the many things he ate....
Sadly, seems like on getting to the US he was more attracted by double arches than a ring.

Re: Promoter Rips In To Solis.
Yup, it seems that the perennial under-achiever that is Fat Boy Solis employed several well-known training partners:
Ronald McDonald, Colonel Sanders, The King, Mr Kipling, Aunt Bessie and Wendy. Ben and Jerry were dietary consultants, along with Elvis' former chef.
I know we joke about it, but 272lbs for a 6-footer is terrifyingly bad for a so-called athlete. Say what you will about Haye, but at least he keeps himself in shape. Solis should be walking around at no more than about 220lbs, 230 at a push. I don't think he's ever fought professionally below 245lbs. It just shows a complete lack of desire and commitment. What a waste.
