Bremen v Bordeaux
Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to this week's Match of the Day, hosted by myself Hero and this week I'm joined by two pundits who they themselves are no strangers to the Pretend Manager league, although in the sense of the word 'stranger' they are ones you wouldn't recommend hang around near the school gates, I give to you...Cricket Fan and Cherries!
CF: Alright.
Cherries: Htanks 4 the introdcukshun.
Brilliant, well that's enough from you two, lets look at the games that happened this week, first up a tasty tussle between Genk & Granada...
Genk 0 - 0 Granada
v
I feel in this game Carrick out Xavi's Xavi early on, for me if you have one of if not the greatest passer of the ball that's ever existed then playing a long ball tactic is like having a Ferrari that you only ever take to Tesco and back. Both sides seem to go with an approach not to lose rather than to win which disappoints me a little especially with it being Trebs last game of the season, in the team talk it comes across as Trebs wants the win but then in individual talks and looking at the team sheet there's very little in attacking threat on show. Highlight of the game for me was Ibrahimovic finding out exactly why Vlaar has the nickname Roncrete after a nicely timed bodycheck.
CS: I like the goalkeeper tactics of 'Don't let them score'. Does what it says on the tin. Also Chiellini, best CB in the world, wouldn't sell him for 50m.
What about you Cherries?
Cherries: Mmm Kondogbia (rubs the top of his calves in a provocative manner)
Basel 1 v 2 PAOK
Toure & Mandzukic

A quality set up from Afroviva and for me possible title faves going into season 4, there are areas of concern though, for me Toure is one, whilst on his day he can destroy the best of teams those days are becoming less and less frequent and I would look to offload him before his stock dissipates. The other aspect of the team that I worry for is it's all Plan A, battering ram style powerhouses, teams will get wise to this and plan accordingly so more creative options may be in order.

I like Nad'z team but the bringing in of Essien is borderline madness imo, there's bargains amongst the older players (see Azzy's team) and then there's players that are clearly past it of which Essien is one, for AC Milan he's not shown anything bearing a resurgence of his earlier years and that's in a slowed pace league that should suit him and it results in Schneiderlin chasing the shadows of Pirlo and Clasie as they play pingpong with the ball. It creates an open game though and one of which attacks > defence so I think it'll be a high scoring match. Very much like the flank options that Marky plays with. Nadz's team has a comeback with the introduction of Honda in the 65th minute but the introduction of Kalou also makes me wonder if Nadz is planning to bring in Malouda as his next purchase.
Cherries: Brain hurtz wid Marky's taktics, 2 meny wurdz.
CF: Agree with Cherries, back in the day I just told my striker to shoot, whats with all these instructions?
Bremen 2 v 2 Bordeaux
Eriksen, Carillo - Griezmann, Varane
v
The loss of Aguero to injury is a big one for Nando and personally I'd have looked to have used Sterling in a more false striker role in a 4-3-3 set up. Fairly evenly matched through the two set ups here and hard to call the match, both teams are strong in certain areas such as Griezmann v Ivanovic and Bender v Eriksen whilst weaker in other pairings such as Cole v Ibe, Fekir v Rabiot, Gabriel v Huntelaar etc. If I was Miky I'd be looking into season 4 to build the team around Eriksen and he could certainly challenge for a higher position. Nando has a lovely balance to his team now and going forward the pairing of Griezmann and Sterling assisting Aguero will trouble any defence in the league. Would have given the win here to Nando but due to a howler from their goalkeeper who shouldn't be anywhere near a team at the end of season 3 has cost him the victory.
Well that's about all for this week folks, any final words from our pundits?

TACTICS
As we are not playing in the final week it is imperative that we win today. Azzy's side is a bunch of oldies in front of the defense, we have a younger side with more energy and that is how we intend to beat them, outworking them, constantly moving. We have wing backs this week as we don't think their wide players will be going wide, probably be looking to get narrow (maybe they'll play a diamond, if not 4-3-3 narrow).
PLAYER ROLES
De Sanctis - Don't let them score, especially Totti, your Roma team-mate.
Darmian/Ghoulam - If they play with widemen then start off a little more cautious, but generally I want you two to get forward at every opportunity and provide us with width. If Sanchez is looking to get wide, then don't get forward, you will have to defend.
Dier/Astori/Chiellini - If Sanchez plays upfront then Dier is to be the main-marker of him, get tight and don't allow him any space to play. If not I want a solid defensive line which makes it difficult to play, congesting the central defensive zone.
Kondogbia - Provide plenty of energy to win the midfield battle, pressurise their midfielders who like to pass but aren't very physical. As soon as you see them coming into our half, press fast, they won't like that.
Carrick - I want you following behind Kondogbia, looking to win back the ball. Hold onto the ball and distribute it effectively as you always do. If Sanchez drops deep, sit in front of the back four in the space he wants to occupy.
Tadic - I also want a lot of energy from you but you should get in and around the strikers when we have the ball. Look to quickly pass it to release a striker or wing back.
Ibrahimovic/Lacazette - Ibrahimovic in his typical role, being his physical self to bully their centre backs, dropping deep, getting all over the final third to make things happen. Lacazette drifting wide and constantly moving, providing their defenders with no time to stop.
SUBSTITUTIONS
If winning - Diaz for one of the strikers to move to a diamond midfield and hold out the game.
If drawing - Son and Lampard for a CB and Kondogbia.. Move to a 4-4-2 flat.
If losing - Lampard, Son, Wilson for a CB, Carrick, Kondogbia. Tadic and Lampard in the middle in an ultra attacking 4-2-4. We must win.

- Granada tactics:
- Injuries: Tin Jedvaj, Daniele de Rossi, Iker Casillas
Starting XI:
------------------------ Buffon
Clyne - Alderweireld - Vlaar - Martinez - Durm
------------- Toulalan ------ Xavi
--------- di Natale ---- Totti ---- Sanchez
Subs: Fernandez, Holebas, Coquelin, Fletcher, Kehl, Streller, Zivkovic
Defending instructions:
1. FBs to push wingers up the pitch; di Natale and Sanchez to drift wide to keep FBs back in position in fear of the counter.
2. Vlaar to man-mark the main striker, Martinez and Alderweireld to beware runs from others and step up to deal with them.
3. Toulalan and Xavi to patrol ahead of them, shepherd play out wide if possible so FBs can clear to the strikers.
Attacking tactics:
1. Long balls on to the runs of di Natale and Sanchez. Use their pace and dribbling skills to get through the defence and get a shot on goal.
2. Totti to have a free role.
3. Xavi to allow Toulalan to dictate play for the first half hour, confusing the other team and allowing him space for the remainder of the game.
Subs on 75mins:
Fletcher and Coquelin on for di Natale and Totti - sit deep, shore up the midfield, you two have to break to support Sanchez.

Basel 1 v 2 PAOK

- Basel tactics:
- ------------------Stekelenburg
Eboue ---Knoche -- Martins Indi - De Sciglio
-----------Illarra --- Blind
Martial ------- De Bruyne ---- Depay
-----------------Adriano
Subs: Salvi,Boilesen,Umana,Sinkgraven,Kuyt,Refaelov & Te Vrede
Team Talk: Up against Afro who has quality throughout so shall look to make it difficult by exploiting the wingers and filling the midfield as he's immensively strong in there.
Defensive Tactics
- Knoche to pick up the main forward, Get tight to him and don't let him turn, Look to block shots
- Martins Indi to pick up the AM getting into positions, If play 2 up top then same as Knoche get close and use pace if turned.
- Eboue & De Sciglio to force the wingers down the line and block the crosses into the box, If cut inside block shots
- Illarramendi & Blind to sit infront of the defense and look to keep them from getting a supply into the forward and track the AM when he gets the ball. Blind to get to Yaya when in possession otherwise to drop beside Illarra.
- De Bruyne to sit on Nainggolan & Matuidi and don't give them time on the ball
- Wingers to come back and double up if need be on the full backs pushing up
Attacking Tactics
- Eboue & De Sciglio to overlap Depay & Martial to get crosses into the box.
- Illarramendi to hit the long ball in behind for Adriano/Depay & Martial also look to take advantage of the full backs Adriano will pull onto for knockdowns, Look to dictate play from deep.
- Blind to sit with Illarra and venture forwards into the space where Yaya will neglect.
- Martial to cut in off the wing and look to run the CB when Eboue overlaps. If forced down line then just whip it in
- Depay to get down the line and whip balls in across the box. If they force inside dink one up to the far post for Bony.
- De Bruyne to sit in the gap between CB's and Defense and look to create chances for the wingers getting in behind
- Adriano to drift onto the full backs when Illarra knocks the ball long and use your aerially ability to get the knockdown for De Bruyne. If in the box when ball comes in run from the far post and look to get above the CB's

Team Talk: Basel today, we've gone for a narrow attack to put pressure on their weak CB forcing them to buckle under the pressure. Attacking FB to give us width from wide and our CM will look to cover if tehy are out of position.
DEFENSIVE TACTICS
I want my FB to show their wingers the outside forcing them to cross on weaker foot. Ogbonna to pick up thier main striker using his speed and physical power to contain him while Barzagli plays as the spare man picking up any free player. Matuidi to sit infront of the back four protecting them putting pressure on their attack when they come forward and slotting into FB to cover for ours. Toure and Nainggolan infront of him so they'll look to control the midfield.
ATTACKING TACTICS
FB to give us width and get constant balls into box for our attackers, Toure to break forward with ball going through their midfield while Nainggolan looks to get passes going and controlling the tempo of the game. Meyer and Menez playing narrow look to cut in play in Mandzukic. Mandzukic always on the move get across your CB for crosses and keep it simple with pass and move.

Montpellier 4 v 2 Verona
Dost x2, Lavezzi, Bellarbi - Costa, Pjanic
- Montpellier tactics:
- Injuries: Anton Mitryushkin, David Henen, DeAndre Yedlin
-------------------Frey
Flanagan - Manolas - Howedes - Willems
-------------------Pirlo
--------------Clasie - Guarin
----Bellarabi------------------Lavezzi
-----------------Dost x2
Subs: Speroni, Aurtenetxe, Motta, Perisic, Barkley, Bakkali, Solanke
Tough game today against Verona, they have some exceptional players but we have the midfield trio and attack to cause them real problems. Changed the system today to be more solid, Clasie and Pirlo can dictate possession in the middle of the park with Guarin supporting without the ball, but becoming the box to box attacker in possession. Bellarabi and Lavezzi can target Verona's fullbacks with their pace. I've gone with Dost x2 upfront with his real life record being so ridiculous, use your strength and positioning to make runs in behind for Clasie and Pirlo to look for the ball over the top, use your pace against Verona's CB's.
Defence: Frey to stay big for one on ones and distribute to Clasie/Pirlo. Howedes to track their striker, beat him to any passes towards him and force him to drop deeper to frustrate him, Manolas to be the first to any second balls. If they play a second striker, Manolas to mark him and Clasie to track any AM. In possession supply Clasie/Pirlo. Flanagan and Willems to overlap the wingers going forward and get crosses into Dost x2. Make sure you get back into position ASAP to avoid being caught out. Defensively force their wingers wide and block the crosses. Don't let them cut inside.
Midfield: Clasie/Pirlo sit infront of the back four, get the ball and look to supply the front four. Bellarabi and Lavezzi will play wide so they are able to switch from playing alongside the midfield when we're attacking but drop and form a midfield five with Pirlo, Clasie and Guarin when defending. Utilise Flanagan and Willems overlapping and use them to play them down the wing or use the space to cut inside. Guarin to play as our box to box CM, when we're attacking get forward, be the link between Clasie/Pirlo and the wingers and Dost x2. Look to supply Dost x2 with plenty of opportunities, and shoot when you get a chance. Bellarabi and Lavezzi as the wingers, both pick up the ball wide and cut inside to leave space for the overlapping fullback, shoot or create when in advanced positions.
Attack: Dost x2 to mark the deepest Verona defender, use your pace and positioning to worry their defenders, drift wide to drag defenders with you, to allow Guarin/Bellarabi/Lavezzi to make runs down the middle into space for Clasie/Pirlo to pick them out. You more than capable of scoring and assisting, so get shots in where you can and look for your teammate in a better position. Switch positions on occasion to keep the Verona players guessing and drag them out of position.
Subs 70 mins:
If winning: Guarin off, Motta on. More defensive 4-5-1 with Motta playing at DM alongside Clasie and Pirlo, and forming a midfield three, Bellarabi/Lavezzi to wide midfield. Absorb pressure then look for Dost x2 on the counter.
-------------------Frey
Flanagan - Manolas - Howedes - Willems
Bellarabi - Clasie - Pirlo - Motta - Lavezzi
------------------Dost x2
If drawing: No change, but push for the winner.
If losing: Willems and Clasie off, Perisic and Barkley on. Change to 3-1-4-2; Push for goals.

----Flanagan - Manolas - Howedes

Captain - Mascherano
Corner Kicks - Pjanic
Free Kicks - Pjanic
This week we are playing against marky and his molestation squad.
DEFENCE
Schwarzer will command the box. Use experience to collect catches and play it safe if under pressure by kicking the ball away. Centre Backs will defend high as we will probably be up against Dost, who is not the speediest of strikers. CB's will stay compact and will look to close down the opposition quickly. Full backs will as always start off in a neutral mentality but as he half goes on they will look to attack more. Make overlapping runs using our wingers and get in crosses whenever possible . Schneiderlin and Essien will look to protect the back four with their great tackling and intercepting ability. When full backs are attacking they will cover for them defensively.
ATTACK
Tello will look to beat the opposition LB on the outside with his pace. Get down to the by line and get a cross in for Costa to bang in. Also help out Jallet by tracking back when we don't have possession of the ball. Miralles will look to cut in from the left and use his silky dribbling ability to work some space so he can get a shot in. Pjanic be the AM and try to create chances for the rest of the team. Try and unlock the defence by threading through balls to either the wingers or to Costa and don't be afraid to shoot yourself if you see a chance. Costa will look to bully the Genk CB's with his superior strenght and aerial abillity. Play in between them and look to use your pace and positional play to try and create a chance.
Subs if LOSING BY 65MINS
Schneiderlin OFF Kalou ON
Switch to a 41212 formation with 2 strikers.
Bring on Honda for Essien fresh legs
Subs if WINNING BY 65MINS -
Tello OFF A Dominguez ON
Pjanic OFF Van Aanholt ON
Change formation to a 5-4-1 and pack the defence.
Subs if DRAWING BY 65MINS -
Keep the same 4-5-1 formation but bring on fresher players.
Essien OFF Honda ON
I like Nad'z team but the bringing in of Essien is borderline madness imo, there's bargains amongst the older players (see Azzy's team) and then there's players that are clearly past it of which Essien is one, for AC Milan he's not shown anything bearing a resurgence of his earlier years and that's in a slowed pace league that should suit him and it results in Schneiderlin chasing the shadows of Pirlo and Clasie as they play pingpong with the ball.

Bremen 2 v 2 Bordeaux
Eriksen, Carillo - Griezmann, Varane
- Bremen tactics:
- Injuries: Theodor Gebre Selassie, Roman Weidenfeller, Adam Maher.
4-2-3-1 formation.
----------------Wolf---------------
Ivanovic—Terry—Veltman--Cole
--------Rabiot-------Gundogan---
Carrillo-------Eriksen------Afellay
--------------Huntelaar-----------
Team talk:
Today we are up against Bordeaux who are full of quality. We are capable of winning and we will need to put a good shift in to do so.
Bordeaux are missing the main striker today in Aguero through injury so it’s likely to be Drogba who plays in place of him. Terry I want you to man mark him and assert your authority in the defensive area, don’t allow him to get in and around our defenders and hold the ball up, look to win the aerial battles against him and be strong. Defensively we need to watch the runs of Griezzman and also probably Sterling on the wings, Cole and Ivanovic you will need to be aware of them and track them all the way, not allowing them to deliver the ball into the box for Drogba. Rabiot you will be in charge of just squeezing the area of the pitch in front of the defence and keep the ball in our possession.
Bordeaux are also missing Azpilequeta through injury so I’m not entirely sure what Nando will try and do, he will either play 3 at the back like last week or play one of his right backs at left back. This is where I want us to focus our wide play. Gundogan, you are going to be in control of keeping the play ticking over and shifting the ball out to the wide areas because this is where I want Ivanovic to be overlapping in support of Carrillo on our right hand side and we want to look to get Huntelaar as many opportunities as possible by crossing the ball into him. Huntelaar we want you to be holding the ball up or getting into the box for a header and getting in and around the back 4 of Bordeaux. Eriksen, you will be the key man today looking to slip the ball into his path today or even using the options out wide and spreading the play.
Subs:
Kroos on for Rabiot – 80th Minute.
Buffel on for Afellay - 85th Minute.
Lorenzen on for Huntelaar - 90th Minute.
v
- Bordeaux tactics:
- --------------Olimpa
Coleman -- Varane -- Gabriel - Bellerin
-----------Bender -- Alonso
Ibe ----------Fekir ----------Griezmann
------------Sterling
Subs: Jug,Rugani,Vidal,El Ghazi,Guedes,Drogba & Perez
Team Talk: Up against Miky, He's got quality in his front 4 but weaker at the back so shall look to dominate the centre of the park and use our pace against Terry and his partner
Defensive Tactics
- Varane to get tight to Huntelaar and look to push him away from the goal, If Huntelaar manages to turn Varane the Gabriel to use his pace to get back at him
- Gabriel to watch for Eriksen getting forward and look to cut the supply into Huntelaar out.
- Coleman to stop Carrillo from cutting inside and look to force him down the line, Bender to double up if he cuts inside.
-Bellerin to force Affelay down the line, Alonso to cut him off if he does.
- If the full backs come up the pitch then the DM's will double up taking the winger cutting in.
- Bender & Alonso to double up with the full backs on the wingers so Full Backs take the wing & DM's cover the cut inside
- Bender to sit and marshall infront on the defense and get close to Eriksen when the ball is inside. Fekir to get close to Grenier when in possession.
Attacking Tactics
- Alonso to sit and spray the passes outwide to the wingers and look to get forward towards Gundogan to double up on him.
- Ibe to use his pace to utilize the space as Cole is going up the pitch and whip the ball in the box
- Griezmann to look to cut inside of the left and drift about Gundogan & Rabiot to open the space for Fekir. If he doesn't come then slide the ball in behind for Sterling or take a shot
- Fekir to sit in the pocket and look to play slide rule passes between the full backs and CB's for the pacey from 3 to get in behind, If Rabiot tries to mark you out then drop deeper
- Sterling to make runs in the channels between full back and CB's to expose the back up CB with his pace. If they try to get close to Sterling then look to roll them in behind and make runs to the front post at crosses.
Subs: Ayoze for Fekir after 70 mins if losing, Rugani for Praet after 85 mins if winning

Lovely. I think MOTD should be a weekly fixture and a requirement of voting. Maybe have Smarts and Nick Fury on next week's show?
Unlucky Trebs, thought for sure that my 90-second tactics would get creamed.

Hey Hero,
Thanks for results first of all, would you do the same as you recommended with Eriksen but with Isco instead now that I have sold Eriksen?
I plan to build my team around Isco now.

There you go Viva, this is your chance for a title. Hero comments as potential title favourites for season 4, so you have a good base to challenge
Everyone - Viva is assuming full control of PAOK going forward, although I am doing tactics this week

Miky, I really like Isco, I do though agree with others in that he's not that much of an upgrade on Eriksen especially in that with Eriksen you have someone who's THE man at Spurs whilst Isco can be a peripheral player in the Real Madrid set up when everyone is fully fit. Personally I'd have been looking to improve upon your weaker areas rather than improve upon your best but what's done is done.

Isco is a marvellous player and was the darling of the league this time last year. I think it's a great purchase.

Potentially, yes. But I have the hugest Eriksen man-crush in the history of football so no. But Isco is a cracking player and a huge name for Miky.
