First topic message reminder :

Round 3 of the Culture Cup 2.0 draws to an end, and what an exciting round it wasn’t.  One can always tell when a thread is going badly when it resorts to puns to keep it going.  The big winner of round 3 was our resident champion and obvious culture vulture, Hero, who bagged another full house of points with The Colour Of Magic.  I’ve not read it so can’t comment on whether it’s any good, but the general consensus of the thread is that it’s not even Pratchett’s best work so perhaps a lucky win for Hero.  Paul scooped up another solid haul of 8 points with the BFG.  I have read that.  I liked it.  Preferred The Witches though.  Perhaps the biggest surprise was Sean picking up 8 points for Lord Of The Flies.  This is the guy who rates Independence Day in his top 3 films.  I don’t think he has read the book, but has almost certainly sh*gged numerous members of William Golding’s extended family.  Male and female.  Solid round for C&R, GrumpyG*lfer and, significantly, Jeff who has streaked away from his arch rival Gordon Strachan superfly with his Adrian Mole nomination.  There is a lesson here, Jeff.  Stop lying about how cultured you are with your usual pompous picks and chose stuff you actually have read/heard/watched.  Look how well your belated honesty has served you in this round.  A few non-scorers again with weeman, Ray Mears and Union Cane all failing to register a vote.  Jules had his 2.0 hymen smashed in by Voltaire and finally troubles the scorers.  Galted failed to muster a single vote (well, apart from the 2 cruel bastards who voted then snatched them away again) and remains on nil points.  The only upside for him is that he is underneath a massive pile of men.  Again.  Happy days, Galted, happy days.

The updated league looks like this:

1: Hero  26 pts
2: Paul  20 pts
3: Harrier  16 pts
4: Trebs  14 pts
5: Ziggler  13 pts
6: Adam  12 pts
7: C&R  12 pts
8: SerialDAVE  9 pts
9: The Boss  9 pts
10: Azzy  8 pts
11: Nakatomi  8 pts
12: Jeff  8 pts
13: GrumpyG*lfer 8 pts
14: Michaels  8 pts
16: Shah  7 pts
17: Beadle  6 pts
18: Weeman  5 pts
19: superfly   4 pts
20: Union Cane  3 pts
21: Dagless  3 pts
22: Julius  2 pts
23: Stella  2 pts
24: Galted  0 pts

Round 4 brings us back to films so please see the poll and cast your votes.

THE POLL IS OPEN FOR ALL OF 606v2 TO VOTE.

Thanks.

His Dark Materials are cracking books. They are, however, three separate books; sadly for HH he didn't benefit like some specky faced twit from such slack rules. I can't have ruddy Orwell or Tolkien but collections of books count as one book!

Shame of this round is I don't like the film I had put it, I would much rather ones lower down my list but I had a few PMs and was just listing random ones I thought might have been Oscar winners.

I've gone for To Kill A Mockingbird. It's just a great film and a great story. Peck is brilliant, along with all the cast, and watch out for a cameo from a young Robert Duvall as Boo Radley. That's movie trivia, kids.

Close between that and Silence Of The Lambs which is just pure brilliance and a film I can go back to time and time again without getting bored.

And both feature animals in the title so would be perfect for an REM theme song.

I've just realized that I misread the bloody question. I thought we had to pick the best film that had won Best Picture and included the Oscar winners for best actor or actress.

You're going to be watching Jeff's oversized backside disappearing over the horizon after this round.

But don't worry, you can claw it back in the final double point extravaganza round.

Democracy is overrated, give me dictatorship and a box of cubans any day. Just don't ever, EVER, disparage Braveheart, Mel Gibson's portrayal of William Wallace, or the soundtrack. EVER.

Oh, Catherine McCormack. What a fine young lady she was. Being 13 when the film came out you can imagine my appreciation for that particular scene. Although it's nothing compared to Kate Winslet in Titanic, never was a film more appropriately named.

FFS is anyone reading posts today, he did not say he went to Uni in Doncaster (there isn't one) he said when he went to Uni (place unspecified) Doncaster had the highest rate. Not sure how the first part of the sentence relates to the second in all fairness, but that is a side issue.

They have also just had an imaginary child.

To be fair Jeff, some punctuation would have stopped the misunderstanding, which, in turn, backs up my subsequent point.

It also sounded like I was the perpetrator in the pre-teen pregnancies, something to be avoided at all costs.

I went to Hull, one of the great universities.

I like Hull to be fair Azzy, had some fun times there, though I would suggest that the level of teenage pregnancy there is nothing to be sniffed at either.

I liked Hull too, chip spice is a rare delicacy everyone should be encouraged to try. Took me ages to get used to the accent, "kerker kerla" and being called "kock". I'm sure the latter was a cultural thing.

Being verbally abused by Roland Gift was a particular highlight of my time there. As was getting Bernard Hill to give a spontaneous Theoden speech at my graduation.

You know as well as me Tina it was scoring a darts game for the bass player in Deacon Blue, stop getting it wrong just to annoy him.
