Scotland u20s World Cup thread
First topic message reminder :
First game is 7:30 tonight, seems a good opportunity to discuss performances and prospects of players. Especially with the enormous gap left behind at the pro teams during the senior World Cup.

But it is yet to actually show any of the game - I hope it isn't a case of you can only watch it if you are outside the UK...

Re: Scotland u20s World Cup thread
I'm watching the world rugby feed - outside of UK...
7-5 to Scotland after 24 mins. Sco were 7 up when Fullback gifted Aus their try after lots of Sco pressure.
Scotland did look good up to then.

My feed went belly up at half time.
Scotland looked really good 1st half, bar one or two silly errors could, probably should, have been well ahead. Guess that's the difference at this level.

Re: Scotland u20s World Cup thread
Given we were pumped by over 60 points last time we played them, this was one hell of an effort.
I reckon we'll struggle in the next game - we've been in several immensely physical games in high temperatures over a short space of time, generally giving away bulk in all of them. That will surely take it's toll, especially on players like Fagersun and Bradbury who have put in massive shifts every game.
8th would certainly be a fantastic result for such a young team - most of them will be available next year.

Final game for Scotland against Ireland about to kick off - unfortunately not on tv.
I think it might be one game too far for them after a long hard slog, but I hope they go out with a positive performance.

Re: Scotland u20s World Cup thread
So are we thinking this has been a positive tournament for the youngsters or not? Seems a couple of guys have put in performances that have them earmarked for the full squad in the future but apart from the outstanding Argentinian result the guys have been competitive in most of the games aside from the all-blacks.

Re: Scotland u20s World Cup thread
Well 8th is our highest ever finish, and let's also remember this group achieved Scotlands highest ever 6N finish.
Reading the match report though the common failing for this team was converting scoring chances and just making too many mistakes. The tournament could have been a lot better, especially if we'd converted some of the chances in both Ireland games.
Positive signs for the future though and some real stars in the making - let's see if they get game time though...

Re: Scotland u20s World Cup thread
It was a disappointing tournament in the sense that (from every account I have read), they were games that we could have won. Just lacking a little bit composure and coherence against some teams.
From what I read, there was much less man/kidshaming than there has been in recent years by virtue of simply being less well developed physically. Then again, it you look at the monsters in the England U20s pack, there is clearly a lot of work for us to do here too.
Thankfully, these kind of things are precisely what should improve in years to come through the academies.

Worth remebering as well that 15 of these kids will be back next year, hopefully older, wiser and a bit bigger!

Re: Scotland u20s World Cup thread
Given our numbers (and our infrastructure) I don't think we'll ever have the depth of player at this level to beat the likes of England and New Zealand. What we are really looking for is 3-4 players in each year who look like international stars in the making; the next Jonny Gray or Stuart Hogg.
For what it's worth I think Kinghorn, Bradbury and Fagerson will wear Scotland jerseys in the future. I haven't seen all the games though so there may be others.

Re: Scotland u20s World Cup thread
Agreed I doubt as if we will be able to get a group of players together at the one age group that will challenge New Zealand, South Africa and probably England.
The aim is to get as many through to international level. There are quite a few from the group that has just played that I think will go on to higher honours. Think the 3 FES mentioned will do, added to that I think McCallum the loose head prop will, Lewis Carmichael, Jamie Ritchie once he has developed a bit more physically. Patrick Kelly at 12 looked very useful and seemed to mix it up and play direct as a crash ball centre or play a more 2nd 5/8 role. Robbie Nairn is another on the wing who looked useful and will develop further as he is only just turned 18.
Potentiallly there are 1 or 2 others that could make it like Ally Miller, George Horne & Ben Vellacott.

Nairn looked strong, I'd agree with that. Horne seemed to mix the sublime with the insane, and for reasons noted previously I have reservations about where Ritchie will ultimately play.
Still, all in all it looks a good crop, and Fagerson could turn out to be a special player.
