He and Hardie in tandem have to be worth a shot.
I like the idea of 2 opensides, but without losing bulk.
Maybe 6 Strauss 7 Hardie 8 Barclay wouldn't be too bad. It's certainly got a lot of attitude.
For me the only debate is between Cowan or Strauss at 6. England have a pretty beef group of forwards and Strauss would be handy in countering that, albeit you lose a bit at the breakdown.
I think if Barclay is going to feature it'll be on the bench. Can't see past Hardie at 7 and Denton at 8.

Re: Scotland 6N lookahead
I'd be a bit concerned if Swinson and Barclay are picked on the bench - a bit too lightweight, especially if Barclay came on for Denton. If Swinson is picked I think we'd need Strauss coming off the bench too for extra bulk.
Ideally though Swinson just isn't picked then we can choose whoever we want on the bench in the backrow!

Re: Scotland 6N lookahead
I'd personally pick Ben Toolis over Swinson for the bench, although I'd probably go with Strauss on the bench anyway. I rate Barclay highly but having Cowan, Hardie and Barclay in the 23 is a bit openside heavy for me, even though Cowan and Barclay can cover 6/8 if needed. England have some big forwards and Strauss is pretty handy at obliterating the opposition in the tackle.

Re: Scotland 6N lookahead
In 'The Thistle', the Scottish Rugby YouTube video magazine thing, Rob Harley is training with the squad. Might he be in with a shot for being on the bench as cover for the second row or even starting at 6? He played well for Glasgow vs Ospreys and is a bit more robust in defence.

Yeah spotted Harley in one of the shots. Would think he must be short of match fitness having been out for over a month and only playing one game.

Haha! :L yes have gone into something approaching full self promotion mode recently :L
But got a new video, calcutta cup related this time, that I'm hoping to spread far & wide!
Re: Scotland 6N lookahead
Strong under 20s team picked, with most of the players having played in the recent WC and last year's 6N
Great to see Charlie Shiel - Graeme Shiel's son and former player with my club - on the bench

Throw in Fagerson to that lot and it is quite a solid team.
I suspect he'll be travelling reserve for the England game, if not on the bench.

No mention of it in their listings. Can't see it on Sky either.
Re: Scotland 6N lookahead
BBC Alba have massively cut back their broadcasts this season so I'm not surprised it isn't on, which is a shame.

Yeah - Georgie Gideon Osborne has slashed the Beeb to pieces and unsurprisingly BBC Alba, typically watched by 3 humans, 45 sheep, a goat and a border collie has taken a part of that hit.
It's as if the Tories don't care about Scottish rugby.

Re: Scotland 6N lookahead
The 6N always draws me back to the V2 vortex!
Thats the best U20 I can remember Scotland ever putting out, although to be fair that is not saying much. In particular I'm looking forward to seeing how Robbie Nairn goes on the wing and how Hastings Jnr goes at 10. Jamie Ritchie has also played in two (?) U20 World Cups now. I really want to see him put in some dominant performances considering his elevation to a full time pro and him now playing with his age group.

I know, it's pretty much perfect.
I feel sick.

Watching the u20's game. Normally it's men against boys, but Scotland are really fronting up. Completely negating the England maul.

England totally bossing the scrums, Scotland defense is more than a match for Englands attack - and Scotlands attack is making yards out wide.

And a sneaky try for scotland right at the end of the half plus England get a yellow card

Re: Scotland 6N lookahead
Wish they would stop calling the venue Braidwood! Likewise didn't realise Blair Hutchison was playing, and scored a try.
Good game though. Men vs boys in the scrum but our back play better. Could definitely still lose it because of that scrum weakness though.

The difference this year is that we now have guys with pro12/aviva experience. They are getting the same level of exposure that the england players get, unlike in previous years.

That was a fantastic win by the U20s. We have lost these games by 50-60 points to England at this level in the past. Surely a lot of these kids have a future in the game, they played with heart, confidence and no little skill. That first try was something else and the tackling was just awesome.
Very, very impressed. We have never beaten England at this level before!
