Federer/Edberg no more?
Word coming out that edberg doesn't want to travel next year and is leaving Feds team. Old buddy Ljubicic to join team.

Ljubicic last week finished with Raonic.
Edberg I guess had enough of work for 2 years to keep himself looking like a 30y old.

If this is the end of the Edberg arrangement, the Swede has done a very good job. His man has had two excellent seasons and remains one of the three best players in the world.

Re: Federer/Edberg no more?
It's official. Edberg saying he originally agreed and planned to only travel with fed in 2014, but had so much fun and grew so close to fed and the team that he went an extra year- with the understanding that was it.
No sure what ljubi can bring to federer really. They are buddy's so maybe it's more about that

Re: Federer/Edberg no more?
Quite sad to see really. Had a bit of a kindered spirit feeling similar to Murray/Lendl dynamic. Edberg like Lendl I guess finding that the travelling aspect of the game hasn't improved in his days as a player, if anything the players cover more mileage. It's hard to gauge improvement on the Federer game given how damn good he is. The racquet change has helped immensely and certainly Roger has adopted an even more aggressive game. Edberg certainly helped develop that.
The Ljubicic appointment is baffling. Just a paid cheerleader really. He didn't get much out of Raonic.

Indeed, what does Ljubicic know that Federer doesn't. Perhaps he can moan about the time he led Rafa Nadal 2 sets to love before losing 7-6 in the 5th that is probably something Rog can relate to. Then they can stick pins in a Rafa doll, wax lyrical about how much faster and better the US Open was in 2006, give James Blake a call, and drink some beer.
As to Edberg, 14 and 15 were better than 13, and about 3 slam finals is a good haul...but...not the title. So it's neither a success nor or a failure.

Federer's coaches are like policemen : getting younger & younger.
If he continues on the Tour much longer, the next time he changes coach he might struggle to find one older than himself

Re: Federer/Edberg no more?

^ Tbh him and Nadal are both in the same boat these days.
Can't be taught anything that will give them any big advantages in the long run.

On the other hand Fingis is back! They'll be in the mixed for the Olympics and probably the early favourites for the gold.

Re: Federer/Edberg no more?
Fed in India for tennis league starting to give insight into his deciscion on Ljubi. saying Ljubi would bring a fresh perspective and since he had actually played against most of the current players on the tour- would be something new that Fed hadn't had with past coaches. Said luthi and Federer himself know a lot already so its more about someone looking at different angles, x's and o's, scouting oppoinents.
Said Edberg has promised to still come train with him a little.
Fed looking forward to something different with the new team and that's what helps him continue to play, wants to play different places, new people, new challenges..... which also led to the mixed doubles decision with Hingis

Re: Federer/Edberg no more?
So the media reports that Federer is playing with Hingis are very very unclear about whether or not he is playing the singles or the men's doubles (with Stan) but as far as I can see he is planning to play all three? Is that so?

Re: Federer/Edberg no more?
I have just been reading that they are adding TBs to the Olympics third set, and playing championships tiebreaks in the mixed, so that will certainly make it easier to play all three. I think it might be a good decision by Roger if he does play all three, because he probably has better chance of winning medals for his country in the doubles. It doesn't seem right to miss this opportunity with Hingis, and Stan and him are defending champions, and the singles it hard to leave out...risky though.
Schedule (week starting):
June 27, July 4 - Wimbledon
July 11 - Davis Cup quarters and others tournaments
July 18 - various tournaments
July 25 - Toronto
Aug 1 - Atlanta
Aug 8 - Rio de Janeiro Olympics and Mexican Open
Aug 15 - Cincinatti
Aug 22 Winston-Salem
Aug 29, Sep 5 US Open
Sep 12 - Davis Cup semis
Toronto has done well here. It is nicely situated 2 full weeks before the Olympics, and on a hard court, and top players you would think won't want to be out of the action for so long between Wimbledon and the Olympics, so it may attract a pretty full field.
Cincinatti on the other hand looks to be the week after the Olympics. That is obviously going to take a hit. Those with masters exceptions (Federer) may not even have it on their calendar in the first place while others may have to cite fatigue the day after the Olympics and pull out. (Not sure who has released 2016 calendars yet?) Could be a weakened field and an opportunity for someone. It could end up being an opportunity for Novak to complete the full masters set without Federer, even if Federer is there, may not be at his best. Although if Novak reaches the Olympics singles semis at least, he might be better to skip Cinci also. So maybe an opportunity for someone in the #5-#10 ranking region to win Cinci, if some of the #1-#4 are not fit, not at their best, or not even playing it.

BBC now reporting singles and mixed yes but men's doubles undecided - no source or quote.
