Dream Golf House?
Idea from the other thread,
We know where shotrock would like to buy a golf property but if you win euro millions this week where would you buy a golf property and why?

I wouldn't buy a golf property, I'd prefer a Alpine Chalet, but if I did buy a golf property, maybe Bermuda where there is a high concentration of courses and good weather.

Super
It doesn't have to be a villa on a golf resort, it could just be a nice house in a town with a great course.

Hilton Head Island, on the beach.
Plenty of golf options, many walkable to, but also plenty of other activities as well for the whole family. Plus close to the great city of Savannah.
Down side - all a bit right wing there for me.

On the Algarve I think. Of the on course ones I've seen, Vale de Lobo. There's a belting 10-20m Euro one by a couple of holes on the coast.

I'm with you on one of those Hend although year round golf will be tough. Have you ever done the cliff walk around Newport? There's some fantastic houses and views to be seen.

Re: Dream Golf House?
absolutley amazing Grumps.
as a student i spent 2 summers there. i split my (non drinking) time between caddying on the golf course and working as a bar tender at some private parties. some of the parties were in the mansions.
not that i was getting paid a whole lot to work at them anyway, but i would have done it for free i think!

Re: Dream Golf House?
Sounds like a great time Hend. I've done the walk a couple of times and always enjoyed reading the "corrections" to the land/home owners signs. Unfortunately a lot of the path was damaged by super-storm Sandy a few years ago and big sections are closed; I very much doubt that it will be repaired which is a great shame.

Well I guess it is in France, but for a sweaty to say that is beyond the pale!super_realist wrote:MontysMerkin wrote:Meribel, right next to the Golf Course pistesuper_realist wrote:I wouldn't buy a golf property, I'd prefer a Alpine Chalet, but if I did buy a golf property, maybe Bermuda where there is a high concentration of courses and good weather.

Meribel is a dump, as virtually all French ski resorts are. Purpose built, 1960's hideousness.
Austria is a infinite amount nicer.

Certainly not Wentworth any more. Probably split my time between my homes in Sunningdale, Sotogrande (for Valderrama) and Sandy Lane in Barbados.

Strange, in my experience Austria has been a real let down. Load of peed silly billy, very expensive, Poopie pistes, hardly any decent off piste. Still, horses for courses I s'pose...super_realist wrote:Meribel is a dump, as virtually all French ski resorts are. Purpose built, 1960's hideousness.

Nothing beats skinning up Vallee des Avals before dawn, watching the sunrise, then pounding a track back. Life affirming stuff.

Re: Dream Golf House?
I've been to virtually all the big resorts in Europe, and I've always found France to be rubbish and over-rated. Outrageously and ruinously expensive, poor lift infrastructure, average terrain, far too busy, ghastly purpose built council estate type architecture, lack of trees and alpine charm.
In comparison, I prefer the terrain in Austria, massive amounts of untracked back country, proper, modern lift systems that have actually been thought out, good apres, affordable beer, other things to do in town and actual alpine charm, civilised transfer times.
If you think Austria has hardly any off-piste, you've not looked, or simply missed it. I spent a whole season in the Arlberg where I was barely on piste.
Horses for courses indeed, and I'm glad Brits seem to prefer France.

I've done 4 and a bit seasons Hend during my deadbeat days, and probably about a couple of dozen weeks.
When you do seasons, you progress at an massive rate.

Re: Dream Golf House?
The other option would be to go down the Tiger route and build a number of holes in the back garden. I read he had 3 greens built with different types of grass for the Open, the Masters etc

Re: Dream Golf House?
You can actually see the greens if you look on Google maps. can't tell the grass type from that range though.raycastleunited wrote:The other option would be to go down the Tiger route and build a number of holes in the back garden. Re: Dream Golf House?
A friend of mine has a chalet next to the golf course in Crans sur Sierre. Very upscale and average skiing, but has a nice relaxed feeling to it. Only been there in winter but can imagine it's ok in the summer too.
