The Judging system is a Godsend for corrupt officials...
First topic message reminder :
Four factors a pro judge needs to consider when scoring a fight..
Clean punching
Ring generalship
Defence
Effective Aggressiveness.....
Ring generalship............."Dictate the pace" .."Ability to grasp every advantage offered"..."Capacity to cope with any situations that may arise"..."Ability to neutralise and foresee an opponent's attack"......"Taking your opponent out of his comfort zone"
Forget us stupid plebs that hand out rounds on "effectiveness"..............
We all scored the Quigg v Frampton fight for Frampton right ???....But think about it.... If someone slapped me a bung to give it to Quigg...
Then I could have scored all the first four rounds a draw by saying...
Defence....Quigg showed good defence.....as did Frampton..
Effective aggression.....No one was "effectively" aggresssive....
Ring generalship.....While Frampton was busier and dictated the pace....Quigg showed the ability to foresee and neutralise his attack and showed the capacity to deal with all situations...Quigg was never out of his comfort zone..
Clean punching......Wasn't any of that.......
I imagine if all the first 4 were scored even....Quigg wins right ????...and it would have been scandalous..
The system is a get out of jail free card for the corrupt and incompetent.....You can almost use it like a politician to spin any result you want....
Much better to score like plebs.........

If it's true that Nitikin has pulled out (allegedly because his face being a mess ....), and if it's true that the judges of his fight with Conlan have been sent home, that is very suspect.

And Shakur Stevenson waltzes into the final after one fight?

Pedro147 wrote:So the AIBA have released a statement in which one part of it says "Sometimes they’ve (judges) lost concentration, we have had 230 bouts.”
So taking the Chief Wiggum defence, “We can’t be expected to ‘police’ the whole town"
The AIBA simply should have said "We back our officials" and rode the storm.....
Pretty unprofessional PR team.......

Farcical judging (boxing & sometimes martial arts) as well as farcical disqualifications (long distance swimming) are worse than drug-taking in my opinion - at least in drug taking they often get found out later & there is a sense that things are improving - but with farcical (or corrupt?) judging decisions the results are never overturned & it never seems to improve (varies from one Olympics to the next).

Joe Joyce clearly won his Olympic fight. What the hell is going on with Olympic judges?

The guy that beat Joyce in the final clearly also lost his semi final bout as well. Having said that, I thought Joshua clearly lost his first or second fight in the London Olympics and could have easily lost the last fight as well. Are certain fighters favoured?
They have 5 judges, with three cards selected at random. You would think even allowing for close fights, that having 5 judges should reduce bad scoring to virtually nil. But there seems to be an unforgiveably high percent of crap scorecards.

TBH, I could see Joyce not winning that. High work rate but a lack of effective aggression.
Frenchy had F all interest in a boxing match, let alone a fight (there's a surprise), but I don't think it was a serious screw job. He did an AA style v high & tight guard and threw a few stiff punches which generally found their mark.

That French dude lost the semi final and the final and still won a gold medal
Laughable, Joyce whooped his backside, how do you win a fight covering up and backing up all day?
Amateur boxing is a complete joke

I thought Erislandy Savon beat him, which was the first fight, it was close though

The brightside for Conlon is that his loss was the most public with stateside media going big on it as well....Gives him a pretty high profile to hit the professional ranks with.......
Maybe bigger than some gold medallists..
I think the Cuban and Shakur were better personally..

I think Conlon will go on to be a top pro. However he had a tough path to gold and there were no guarantees he'd win it but he was the favourite.

Re: The Judging system is a Godsend for corrupt officials...
I'm glad i'm not alone in thinking that Joyce beat Yoka quite comfortably, the first and third rounds were quite clear rounds for him as far as I could see. He had the superior work rate and despite missing a lot he was the one landing the heavy shots and hurt him on numerous occassions, the fact one judge gave Yoka all three rounds is beyond belief.
There seemed to be a trend that the backfoot boxers were getting a lot of help from the judges, Savannah Marshall beat Fontijn for me but yet again the more defensive fighter with low output won.
The refereeing was a joke as well, the guy Kazak who 'beat' Buatsi was so scared of his power that he held on for the majority of the fight and again got very preferential scoring. On a side note despite only winning bronze he looked like the real star of the games, fully capable of making a big splash in the pro game.

I actually watched the RJJ fight in the 88 final again this morning. I still can't believe he lost. We often get the term 'masterclass' used when watching fights but as Olympic fights go and particularly finals, it really was a masterlass.

RJJ got the Val Barker award for best boxer at the Olympics....
It's kinda like getting a million dollar payout when you get released from the can after they realise you're innocent...
Afraid it is a murky world we are living in..

The rjj fight was one of the most blatant robberies you will see in boxing ring
The south Korean didn't even win a single second of that fight Let alone round rjj could have koed him had he known he would get robbed
The buatsi fight was hilarious ref must have warned for holding 6 times
By the end I was actually laughing at the poor quality of refereeing

The ref in the Buatsi fight was appalling, but at the end of the day the fight just highlighted Buatsi amateur inexperience.
He came up against someone much more experienced who knew Buatsi's boxing skills weren't top draw and he relied on his power therefore he tied him up lots (too much with too little punishment IMO) whilst Buatsi spent all three rounds head hunting and never realising he needed a Plan B (a bit of jab & move) and instead started to throw his toys out the pram.

Good article in this month's Boxing Monthly on how they're looking to simplify scoring into three categories.

Problem is does anyone think Conlon wins with simplified scoring ??
Simplifying the judges would be better.......
