606v2, how do we want this to go?
First topic message reminder :
Davie mentioned on a thread that had gone a little of topic that there is no charter or mandate form the creators of this site pertaining to how it should be run and the content allowed. I propose that we discuss here how we would like the tone and content of the golf section to be set.
I think we would all agree that the old 606 was often a tough place to discuss the more delicate subjects such as tigers dodgy doctor or anything else that might make a lawyer jittery. At the same time the mods were not the best at keeping the topic golf related, a problem we may already be encountering 606v2.
I propose thee tone on 606v2 should be more serious with the emphasis on more detailed debates on golfing topics. At the same time anyone using the site should be made to feel confident in posting their opinions no matter how experienced they are or how often they use the site.
A slightly higher intellectual tone may be a way we can create a unique experience on 606v2 golf compared to other forums. This means resisting the urge to post very off topic posts or resorting to needless posts offering no more than pointless thought you had at that moment.
This does not mean to say we cannot have light hearted non hard core golf debates but these should be started separately and clearly labelled as of topic or OT in the article heading.
I think this debate will be crucial to the success of 606v2 golf as it will ensure there is a clear purpose to the forum. We should all place our thoughts and agreements/disagreements below.

SR - do you dislike Gervais because he is a little portley?

No, because he isn't funny, plus he's incredibly smug, over-rated and over exposed, much like that fat Smithy bloke, alright to begin with, dreadful now.

Gervais isnt even portley anymore, now he has become americanised.
But anyone that says he is no comedian, must not have seen the office, which is easily one of the greatest comedies ever made.

I agree with Smithy, but never found him funny, every joke was ( a bit like Graeme Norton - sexuality) advertsiing that he is a fat t***

Smithy? Who's Smithy?
I saw (some of) The Office. Although some of it was funny and some of it clever, most of it I found cringeable I'm afraid.

Navy, he's the shiversome and unsightly James Corden, he of the over-exposed and painfully unfunny

What does most of the stuff posted on here have to do with the topic?
Kindly do you job and keep things on track, this is why the problems of the last week have surfaced and we have lost people like Rossa.

For heavens sake "Disgusted of Braid Hills" it's a bit of light hearted banter, light relief from the last couple of days.
Incidently I'm moving down to Edinburgh soon, you can treat me to a game at your course.

Oh no, the teacher's arrived
Blody hell Mac, calm down. I don't think Rossa has left because we're talking about James Corden. I may be wrong

Corden can be funny. But is a bit hit/miss. Thats the thing with comedy its all down to opinions. Like the person who found the office cringeable, cringeable can be funny, as shown in Curb your enthusiasm.

There are threads for this sort of stuff on the home page or even d4s's anything goes thread, so please post in the correct place or all threads become OT.

Watch the language please Mac. In fact, if you're going to deliberately circumvent the profanity filter in this way, you're likely to find moderation that you may not have expected.
This would be your "intellectual" discussion technique?

Mac, i was reading throgh some of Kwini's Vikings Ballwasher thread this morning and you'd posted -
"Anyone else just watched the Womens world cup final, it really was a very exciting end to the match?"
So give it a break!
It's not as if we've detroyed the entire thread!

Forums are just similar to conversations they get dragged all over the place. Where would the fun be if you had to open a new thread everytime it seemed to be going off topic with an answer to a question or a comment/remark.

Re: 606v2, how do we want this to go?
It's a churned up old thread anyway!
As for Gervais and Corden - The office was good but I thought that Extras was better only because he succeeded in making it funny but taking himself out as the main character and centre of attention - his rant in the final episode about big brother was also genius! As for Cordes, really good comedy writer - Gavin and Stacey and Fat Friends were very well written. He's just spread himself too thinly (if possible) and now turns up every time you turn the bloody telly on!

Only problem with the braids is the guy who sells golf balls on the 7th tee for Cigarettes. with his bag of beer next to him.

Re: 606v2, how do we want this to go?
Oops it was probably my fault again. I made an observation earlier in the thread after reading a certain post. The post was so ironic it was hilarious (somewhat typical of the kind of statement Ricky Gervais's character in the Office would come out with) and I pondered that a comedian may be stalking the boards in disguise.
The thread may not be golf monthly material but a mild bit of banter does come as a bit of light relief to some of the "debates" of the last few days.

Kwini, i certainly wasn't meaning to impune your thread, which i much enjoy.
I was just trying to say you can't pick and choose when to lecture others about being off topic.
Sorry to have picked on your article!

Re: 606v2, how do we want this to go?
MPB, I'm glad you did!!!
Interesting point though, some threads are more narrative than others which are very specific.
Not sure about others but I believe it's important to take charge of one's thread; if you don't like the way it's going, it's up to the OP to steer it back on course. And I still miss the option to delete a comment, which I think I only ever used once, but is a valuable tool of last resort (I know, I know!).

Re: 606v2, how do we want this to go?
Personally not in favour of the delete function, it's not a blog site and unless a poster contravenes site rules then they should be able to post on any thread that's up here. There was a case of a mod on the athletics board deleting posts from a guy he didn't like and if normal users have the same power it could lead to trouble IMO.
I know you are a fair guy Kwini (the odd BBC issue aside) and would rarely delete but you have to set the board up for all users.

Fine line isn't it Digs, The only time I ever invoked it, it was because a poster was grossly insulting to the family of another poster. Enough was more than enough.
Always open to a good difference of opinion though!

I think this site is fine the way it is. In fact, it's better than the old site. We're lucky to have attentive mods who can monitor things. Going off topic is no big deal and sometimes this is the price you have to pay for a bit of humorous banter.

Also @McLaren and others. I've seen that your comment (and following comments that quoted it) have been edited to remove your attempt at getting around the swear filter.
I've cautioned a few people before for that - the swear filter is there for a reason whether you like it or not. Please respect it or more official warnings and potentially 24 hour bans will follow.

Have to disagree with you there. If someone starts a thread for a specific purpose, it can be very frustrating when it degenerates into a pointless argument on some completely random topic that bears no resemblance to the original topic. A bit of banter to keep things lighthearted is perfectly acceptable but some of the recent threads have been an embarrassment.
I'm in favour of bringing in a delete facility. In my experience on the old 606, it was generally only used by the WUM's when they got a response they didn't like.

Swearing on sites would get picked up by work filters, we let you swear and then suddenly half the people can't access the site.
As adults though surely you have an extensive vocabulary that you don't have to resort to swear words?

I think in most cases, certainly on this forum there is no hijacking of threads to deliberately "off topic" subjects .
An original post usually degenerates into an off topic one when the question/issue has been done to death, people start going round in circles or people simply get bored.
I don't think we have a problem really.
We should actually count ourselves lucky that we have enough people to keep the forum interesting. The SPL site is a virtual desert (much like the football) so we are actually in a very good position, save for some minor irritants.
