List The Three Things You Hate Most About Your Game
First topic message reminder :
I am sure many of you watch Rick Shiels on Youtube, well in his most recent video about improvements over the summer he suggests it is a good idea to list the three things you hate most about your game and work on them over the winter.
Here is the video if you want to watch it.
My list would be
1. Constantly fighting a hook on drives.
2. Coming out the shot and catching iron shots on the bottom half of the club. (I think due to poor footwork)
3. Very poor ball striking with my long irons compared to the shorter ones.
What would yours be?

Says who?
I know guys who have a baseball grip and another who is cack handed and both are comfortable Cat 1 golfers. There is no "best" method for everyone. It's whatever suits.

:sigh: Yes. Maybe I didn't interpret your point 1, above, correctly. Do you mean you're hooking due to it not being in the fingers enough? If so, that's bunkum. Yes, you should have the grip so it's into your fingers, but if it's too much you're asking for a hook, or to make a hook worse. It's a balance, clearly, but if you're too much in the fingers, it'll make a hook worse.SetupDeterminesTheMotion wrote:navyblueshorts wrote:Hmmm. Unless I'm very much mistaken, having your grip such that the club is more in your fingers will exacerbate a hook tendency.SetupDeterminesTheMotion wrote:McLaren wrote:

Those are mine also.
1. Due to grip , not being in the fingers
2. exactly
3. No idea what causes this, probably trying to hit it to hard & losing tempo.
What ?
Your club is supposed to be in your fingers, not in the palm of your hand.
This allows the club to release much better.
As for this mythical 'release', people worry about it too much. Given the speed and momentum at impact, hands will always 'release' unless actively restrained.

Navy
I pro told me once that most hook/slice grips are due to how far your grip manipulates your hands away from roughly how they would sit if you just let them hang in front of you. Although a really palmy grip would seem a bit ham fisted and would surely cause issues of its own?
If the finger grip entices a flip at impact I could see how overdoing it would cause a hook.

Amazing how thickness of grip can have an effect as well. My old mans got hands like shovels and has extra jumbo grips, nightmare to play with (both him and the grips!). Find I fade the ball a lot more using his phattys.

Yes, that's fine. However if you get it more into the fingers than that sort of thing, you'll accentuate a hook.....which was what I was saying.SetupDeterminesTheMotion wrote:Check here :
