Benn vs Collins
I really hoped this was sons, but no, at 52 and 53 (and 20 years out of the ring), Nigel Benn and Steve Collins are talking about fighting each other.
This should not be allowed, but they say if BBBC does not grant them licenses, they will find somewhere abroad.
Words escape me.

Nigel Benn and Steve Collins have told BBC Sport they have agreed a rematch - even though neither man has fought since the 1990s and both are over 50.

If the British Boxing Board of Control refuses to sanction the bout, both fighters have said they would seek a boxing licence from abroad.

Re: Benn vs Collins
Would rather this was done with full headgear if they insist on doing it. Difficult one to judge as it should be their right to take one last fight against a man their own age and they must both miss the buzz and adulation of being in the ring.
How long before Eubank Sr says he wants to fight the winner?
Would rather they toured together doing exhibition fights throughout the tour 2-3 round per night with protective gear. Would expect that to make them more money if that was the aim and they could have a winner at the end of the tour.
Thinking I should be a promoter as I would probably watch that!!!

Well Eubank and benn have been trying to arrange a 3rd fight for the last couple of years but haven't been able to agree terms. I believe Eubank wanted to promote it and Benn wouldn't agree to his demands.
Collins has been chasing RJJ too so none of this is a surprise.

Foreman is 17 years older than Tyson.
How about Foreman vs Holmes - same age as each other and both have had pro fights more recently than Benn.

Fair enough!

Can't help but feel a sense of nostalgia. However the thought of to over 50 yr olds punching each other in the head tips the balance towards horror.

Is this the same Benn that quit against Collins and he only lost because he was over the hill?

Re: Benn vs Collins
I'm trying to figure out which is worse - trying to convince RJJ he should quit or trying to convince these two former champs to not start again.
Trouble is that the fringe boxing fans from the 90s will see this through rose tinted specs and be requiring a war. It won't be...

I liked how Ben said it was about closure, but Collins has been honest and said its about money as he wants to buy more land.

Re: Benn vs Collins
Let me be the first person to own up to probably watching it(IF it happens).
Definitely they miss the buzz, all boxers do.It is not easy for us to understand just how much, but in the entertainment industry there is a high level of depression and suicide when their lives don't cut it post-retirement.As long as they don't seriously hurt each other, its their business, plus there are plenty of mugs who want to get their youth sold back to them. How else can I explain going to see clapped out guys playing stadia on the music circuit..
And if they do hurt each other, well that's the deal anyway in the sport.
Just look at the Rocky film franchise...people like this schtick.

It probably won't happen in the same way RJJ and Collins was talked up a couple of years ago and didn't happen. The two probably have some business dealings and it helps that their name is put back in the spotlight for a bit.

Re: Benn vs Collins
Benn hasn't been out of the gym since he quit all those years ago. He's still kept fit and boxed surprisingly. Not sure about Collins but if we can laud B-Hop for still fighting up to his 50th birthday and beyond, not sure why we'd pour scorn on Benn doing the same given he hasn't boxed for 21 years I would say his faculties are perhaps more intact.

Re: Benn vs Collins
It has been widely reported that Benn has a 'shadow' on his brain. At this point I should point out that a) I don't know if this is actually true, and B) I have no idea what a shadow on the brain is.
Now, my lack of understanding aside, surely that would prevent him getting a license? My other observation is that Benn looked shot against Colins 21 years ago, whereas Hopkins looked pretty good up until his last couple of fights, and over the length of his career took less beatings than Benn, I'm not convinced that Benn's faculties are the better preserved.

I'm not sure benn had a lot of faculties before he took to getting punched in the head for a living
