South Africa "planning" squad
From SArugby.co.za
Thirty-seven players have been called to a national planning camp in Durban on Sunday and Monday, the South African Rugby Union announced on Wednesday.
The assembly is the second of three planned get-togethers for leading South African players and Springbok management to make logistical preparations for the coming international season.
The group includes four players who were not called to the first camp in Cape Town in mid-May. They are in-form Toyota Free State Cheetahs loose forward Ashley Johnson and Frans Steyn, Ruan Pienaar and Butch James – the latter trio all had commitments with overseas clubs at the time of the first camp.
“The fact that a player may not have been included in this group does not mean they are out of the running for the International season by any means,” said Springbok coach Peter de Villiers. “The first session was designed to get an expanded group onto the same page and this reduced group with senior players, and one or two newcomers, is designed to go into more detail.”
John Smit (captain)
Victor Matfield (vice-captain)
Willem Alberts
Gio Aplon
Andries Bekker
Bakkies Botha
Heinrich Brüssow
Schalk Burger
Juan de Jongh
Jean de Villiers
Bismarck du Plessis
Jannie du Plessis
Fourie du Preez
Jaque Fourie
Bryan Habana
Francois Hougaard
Butch James
Ashley Johnson
Werner Kruger
Pat Lambie
Tendai Mtawarira
Lwazi Mvovo
Odwa Ndungane
Wynand Olivier
Coenie Oosthuizen
Ruan Pienaar

So this looks like the provisional WC squad at this time - good enough to challenge in NZ?

Re: South Africa "planning" squad
It's not the provisional World Cup squad- unlike in the Northern Hemisphere they have a whole tournament to play before then. What happens in the TriNations will decide their RWC squad.

I hope Oosthuizen goes to the RWC. Comically athletic for a front row - could be a cult hero.

Quite like the look of that squad, it might actually begin to take good shape.
Glad that Adie Jacobs is not there.

I don't know Biltongbek, everytime I have seen Adie lately he played really well. Create a few tries for the sharks. But ja, we do have much better players than him currently. I would take the Stormers centres and buckup centres.

PDV maybe knows what he`s doing after all a Biltong, despite your pessimism i`ve never seen a really poor Bok side.He has gone on record as not going to play a watered down side in 3Ns.Noises from NZ are they will be fielding weakened teams. So morale boost for Boks or Oz going into RWC as 3Ns champs?Frannie Steyn as expected but was unimpressed by him lat time he played.Butch James? now that is a blast from the past.Thought a lot on that list was longterm injured.

The Beast, Smit and Oosthuizen- they'll run 'em off the park!

I like the idea of Beast, Bismarck and Coenie! What an atheltic front row.
Imagine they had Brits in there...!
Also, what do you South Africans think of Pierre Spies? I, personally, do not understand the hype. He is a limited player if not playing on hard ground and does not seem to have any fire in his belly or rugby brain.
If I was South African, it would infuriate me to see him start when you have the likes of Kankowski, Alberts, Johnson and Daniels who could all play there!

Re: South Africa "planning" squad
All very well having an athletic front row,can they Scrummage thats there primary role. Not running round the field or throwing lineout jumpers in the air.
At least most of the All Blacks props can scrumage even if they can`t clockunder 9seconds for the 100metre.s

Alan, PDV also said that players will be monitored to see how many minutes of rugby they have played and will be protected if necessary.
He also said that it is against the rules of SANZAR to send watered down teams, but Jake White did it in 2007, so you can bet your bottom dollar that all three countries will look at protecting their top players.
As for PDV knowing what he is doing, well, Rassie Erasmus most likely has a lot more to do with this selection than we think.
Francois steyn may not have looked great last year, but with all the miscommunications and issues between him and PDV, I wonder how motivated he was last time round. You can also add that it is difficult for a fullback to prove his worth when the flyhalf keeps kicking possession away.

Biltongbek give PDV the credit he deceives he knows what he is doing .I think PDV will or at list do like the last time 2007 play all the players at home and experiment when we are on the road during the TN.

To be honest, Pienaar and Du Preez are their two best 9s. Pretorius has been excellent, but it was always going to be between him and Hougaard.

I see that the squad is now 49 strong and Johann Muller of Ulster is in the extended squad
