Re: London Irish vs Edinburgh Rugby Sat 14/10 Challenge Cup
Head coach Richard Cockerill has named his Edinburgh side for tomorrow afternoon’s European Challenge Cup opener against London Irish at the Madejski Stadium (Saturday 14 October, kick-off 3pm).
The team selection includes nine changes to the starting XV which proved too strong for Zebre at Myreside last weekend. In the back-three, Glenn Bryce replaces the injured Blair Kinghorn at fullback whilst wing Damien Hoyland rotates in for Tom Brown who drops to the bench. Dougie Fife keeps his spot on the opposite flank.
A revamped midfield sees Chris Dean return to action at outside centre. The 23-year-old links-up with Junior Rasolea who makes his first start since the season opener. Jason Tovey continues at stand-off and is partnered by Sam Hidalgo-Clyne.
In the front-row, Stuart McInally keeps his spot at hooker after his impressive outing against Zebre last weekend. The 27-year-old will pack down alongside Simon Berghan and Allan Dell – who also makes his first start of the season.
In the second-row, Ben Toolis is joined by Fraser McKenzie - who skippers the side on his 85th appearance in the black and red. The only alteration to an otherwise unchanged back-row sees John Hardie replace Magus Bradbury.
On his team selection, Richard Cockerill said: “We’ve picked a strong side which we believe can compete against a dangerous London Irish side. We’ve made nine changes, but the guys who’ve come in have a point to prove and we hope they can put their hand up for future selection.”
“This club has experienced some relative success in European competition, so we hope with a positive result tomorrow we can kick-start another memorable run once again.”
Will be interesting to see who plays 10 if Tovey gets injured...Bryce?

I think SHC would move to 10 and Fowles would play 9.

I am so excited about this tomorrow. That's 13 changes to the starting line up from last week, but this is a selection that has so much potential in it.
How close are Edinburgh from a full strength side? I recognise quite a few names in the line up which tells me they must be fairly regular starters as I'm certainly not an expert on Edinburgh Rugby.

Re: London Irish vs Edinburgh Rugby Sat 14/10 Challenge Cup
it is a difficult question to answer Ozzie as we don't know what our 1st XV is - there are generally 2 players in each position that are very similar in ability to each other. Problem is we're underachieving as a team so that doesn't necessarily point to good depth.
Saying that, if I had to pick my 1st XV I'd probably have around half the players listed in there, and the other ones aren't far behind so it is a strong team. Given that we've put out a strong team and LI have an inexperienced team it should be an Edinbrugh win, but the joys of being an Edinburgh fan is that we have no idea whether that will actually happen!

Re: London Irish vs Edinburgh Rugby Sat 14/10 Challenge Cup
The reality for us RDW is that we just don't know how this team will perform, especially in the pack.
Woolstencroft is on debut having only signed this week (we have 3 hookers on the treatment table), the two starting props have been benching in the AP, again due to injury, but probably started the season as 4th choices. that said, both have outperformed the players they've replaced when they have come on, and there were plenty of calls for them to start against Tigers ahead of Franks and du Plessis. McNally has been good for us in the AP, but that has been at 6, and this is Northcote-Green's first game back after a season ending injury suffered in November last year.
Are you coming to the game?

Re: London Irish vs Edinburgh Rugby Sat 14/10 Challenge Cup
Crosbie is a new face on the bench for Edinburgh. Fairly solid team. Probably the best centre combination so far this season for Edinburgh. Front row actually has one of the first three choices at loosehead. The pack to a man are talented but looking for performances from Hardie and CDP who have fallen off a cliff (more CDP than Hardie).
What has happened to Tonks? Is he injured? How many guys over 25 are in that line-up?
They are probably about equal in the backs and Edinburgh have considerable pedigree in the pack. Edinburgh have been a bit Jekyll and Hyde so hoping that a win here can help build a little consistency.

Tonks is out with a hip injury. Has actually been pretty decent lately when called upon. Players in bold are 25 or over (Topsy Ojo is the only player older than 27). Will be interesting to see how they do as it's certainly a stronger Edinburgh team despite the potential.

I don't have much to add to this, save to say good luck to both teams and also that Lovejoy Chawatama has to be best name for a professional rugby player, ever.

Just to add that 7 of the 23 are not just under 25 but are under 21. I believe Joe, Jack, Isaac and Jacob can all still play U20 rugby this year and Ben Loader can play U19. It's a very young squad for sure.

Re: London Irish vs Edinburgh Rugby Sat 14/10 Challenge Cup
Joe, Jacob and Isaac are all too old to be playing any more U20 as they are Sept to Dec birthdays, so only get one season of U20s eligibility out of school. Same story with Ben who will only be able to play U20s this season.
Still good to see them all get gametime at this level though

37-14 win for Edinburgh with 5 tries - should hopefully give us some much needed confidence.
The Russian team beat Stade so there's no guarantee we'll win next week with our B team out!

Good win for Edinburgh. They really aught to win this pool now. I can't believe that the Russians beat Sade for any other reason than the French could not be bothered. I can't see Edinburgh being that complacent and they have got some incentive now.
Two good wins these weeks could really get their season going

Was never expecting to get much from that although with about 5 mins to go they were within a penalty/drop goal for a LBP, then it all went wrong conceding 2 more tries ...

Re: London Irish vs Edinburgh Rugby Sat 14/10 Challenge Cup
Two tries in the last 5 minutes when we were down to 14 and replaced our two eldest players Ojo and Lloyd with two 19 year olds gave the score a bit of gloss.
Fully deserved win for Edinburgh who were the better side but the scoreline doesn't really reflect the game.

No real highlights yet but Rasolea's try is in this link from 59s - no idea where he got that pace from!

Some nice tries from Edinburgh - we actually looked like a team who could attack! I know it was against LI B team but will hopefully give us some confidence.
Crosbie's try was a belter, albeit with weak tackling. He looks like he has something about him and may get a chance with Bradbury's disciplinary issues just now.

The team sorely needed to score a few tries, so it was a very welcome win. Hopefully we can back it up this weekend. Rasolea has had a few good moments for us this season, and on balance I think I'd take him over Burleigh at the moment.
