Kings vs Edinburgh, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, 17:15 - Fri 1.12.17
I'm beginning to get quietly excited about Edinburgh's future, there's surprising depth and the performances are definitely improving.
Not convinced by the backline but the pack looks pretty handy and the bench will have impact.
Would prefer to see Hidalgo-Clyne & Dean play rather than Fowles & Burleigh.

Full team sheet
Head coach Richard Cockerill has welcomed back six members of Scotland’s successful Autumn Tests squad for tomorrow night’s Guinness PRO14 encounter with the Southern Kings at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth (Friday 1 December, kick-off 7.15pm local time / 5.15pm GMT).
In the backs, Phil Burleigh returns to partner James Johnstone in the centre after making his international debut off the bench in last Saturday’s record 53-24 win over Australia at BT Murrayfield.
In the pack, Simon Berghan links up with hooker Neil Cochrane and fellow international prop Rory Sutherland who makes his first start of the season at loosehead.
In the second-row, Grant Gilchrist also returns from Scotland duty having come on as a replacement against the All Blacks and starting in the eight-try rout of Australia. He partners club captain Fraser Mckenzie.
Fijian international Viliame Mata keeps his place in the back-row and is joined by the experienced duo of Jamie Ritchie and Cornell du Preez, both of whom joined the squad in South Africa following their contribution to Scotland’s Autumn Test campaign.
On his team selection, Richard Cockerill said: “I’m delighted to have some of the Scotland guys come out and add to the squad. There’s obviously a good vibe around what they’ve achieved over the last few weeks, so you’d like to think that will have a ripple effect on what they do now they’re back with us.
"The Kings are a dangerous team. They have a lot of pace in their back three, are very lively at fly half, and as you would imagine, have a big forward pack. We’ve worked hard again this week and are going into the game with a positive mindset around how we’re going to play.
"These points are going to be important when the season comes around to qualifying for Europe or trying to push for a top-three spot if we can. We won’t be taking the Kings lightly however. They pushed Ulster and Scarlets all the way in their last few games so we’ve got to get things right on Friday night."

I suspect there won't be much for us to talk about as this isn't on TV!

Exactly. Is this down to ALBA or the club and ALBA failing to come to a deal with the SARFU

Alba piggy back on host broadcasters for away games - if it isn't being shown in SA there's not a lot they can do. BBC Alba are hardly going to set up their own broadcast infrastructure in SA for a game!

Ah, I see, I did wonder for last week's game. So ALBA buy the footage and fly out a commentator? Maybe last week's guy's off the feed some lions this weekend?

I'd be amazed if they flew out a commentator - they probably just sit in BBC headquarters watching it on TV. It's not like they would need to be there to sample the atmosphere in the stadium!

According to the Pro14 broadcast schedule site it is being shown by an SA television company. Sadly I can't find out what they are called or really anything about them other than their logo appears to be an "S".

With regards to Alba not showing it, they're showing the Glasgow game, which kicks off later in the evening, they probably have some kind of guidelines to suggest that two rugby games of an evening would be too much so had to pick one.

Well, you've just bust my romantic view of TV coverage. I'd imagined the commentator's having a wee jolly and feeding lions.

A trip to SA for a commentator (and a producer, technician etc) would probably blow half of BBC Alba's annual budget!

Wouldn't it be on Supersport? I am sure there is a stream somewhere.
Kings had a chance last week and are starting to look a bit more competitive. Would have started Toolis ahead of Gilchrist and SHC over Fowles (who I have no time for). Burleigh-Johnstone is an exciting centre combo.
Other than that, happy for Marfo, McInally and Watson to be given a break (especially if Watson has an issue with his back on a long plane ride).

I think those 3 definitely needed a rest - Marfo and McInally played a lot of minutes over the last 3 weeks and Watson would have been fairly beaten up, plus as you say his back injury probably needs rested.
With London Irish then Krasny Yar at home coming up there's a good chance to rotate the squad and keep everyone fresh. I hope the team against Krasny Yar is full of youngsters.

The game vs Krasny should be filled with Academy players and a anyone who goes to watch the game that has a spare pair of boot on them.
There should be absolutely no way that they should beat us here. However, thats what Stade Francis would have thought!

To be fair that was in freezing Krasny and the Stade players clearly didn’t give a crap.
It will certainly be a good opportunity to get the whole squad a run out – youngster, plus those who aren’t getting much gametime and those not long back from injury. Something like:
1 Sutherland
2 Fenton
3 Bryce
4 Bresler
5 CHH
6 Carmichael
7 Crosbie
8 Bradbury
9 Shiel (academy 9)
10 Van der Valt (get him gametime with his new team)
11 VDM (ditto)
12 Rasolea
13 Dean
14 Brown (would be Graham but he’s with the 7s)
15 Bryce

ditto. If anyone has a working stream I'd appreciate it.
It shouldn't be this difficult given than UK broadcasters aren't interested in showing it

Re: Kings vs Edinburgh, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, 17:15 - Fri 1.12.17
Just watched the game in full - I thought it was a pretty good Edinburgh performance but scrappy at times.
We started like a runaway train and scored 3 quick tries. The second was a beauty with Mata galloping in from halfway after a lovely offload from kinghorn, was his usual attacking threat throughout.
We then had our usual mid game slump, but managed to pull it back in the last 20 minutes with SHC providing real impact off the bench (and bagging an assist and 7 minute hattrick all from close range.)
Up front our scrum was strong and Gilchrist put in s big shift. CDP and Ritchie had quiet games but Mata was fantastic - these are the conditions he thrives in to be fair!
In the backs Van Der Valt had a decent game at 10 and should be given a run of games now. He's a good attacker with a solid all round skillset, although his goal kicking isn't great. Burleigh had a strong game and adds real class in midfield. JJ was disappointingly quiet.
The new winger VDM had a bad game and was subbed off - some basic errors and got smashed back a few times in contact. He certainly shouldn't be written off but he's got to play a lot better than that.
A final word on the kings - they really weren't great. Some good athletes but a bad basic skillset. They just need to survive this season and regroup in the summer and hopefully they'll be more competitive next year.

That’s perfect, imo Hidalgo-Clyne plays better when he kicks goals, looks like he gets confidence from it. Fingers crossed this is his return to form, he could be a big player for Edinburgh.
Pack played pretty well and good to see Sutherland get an hour, awesome to think McInally, Nel, Toolis & Watson would all start.
VDM was disappointing but against the Cheetahs he looked impressive, once he settles I can see him doing well.
Great result, possibly the best of the season? (spanking the Osprey was pretty good too).
Shame Fruean is retiring.
https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/99494019/kiwi-rugby-player-robbie-fruean-to-retire-after-longrunning-health-battle--report
Never been a big Burleigh fan, would prefer to see Chris Dean get a run at 12 with Johnstone until
is fit.
Darcy Graham made the Dubai 7s Dream Team too, all ready overly excited about his potential if I’m honest.
15 - Kinghorn
14 - Graham
13 - Bennett
Yikes that’s a great start to a team sheet.

Yeah I really don't know why SHC isn't our regular kicker - when he was he was one of the best kickers in the league. Tovey definitely isn't a better kicker for example but he tends to be our first choice kicker.
SHC took over kicking duties when he came on so if he stars (which I think he should) then I'm assuming he'll kick.

Cockers always seemed to have it in his head that the 10 kicks the goals. Last season (before he was sacked) there were a number of games where both Freddie Burns and Owen Williams played for us. Usually it was Burns 10, Williams 12 and Burns was the goal kicker. Yet when Burns wore 15 and Williams 10, the Welshman took the goal kicks.
