Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
First topic message reminder :
So far on the pre-show, Tony Nese wins the CW title and Carmella wins the Battle Royal which means Im officially 0-2 in predictions.
Revival currently battling Hawkins & Ryder. Been decent enough so far. Hawkins looks ridiculous.

That was a rank finish, in a generally meh match.

In what was an eminently forgettable WrestleMania, I think it should be remembered for the joy of KofiMania and a weird match and mucky ending should not be enough to quell the joy of Becky Two Belts.

One is absolutely SHOCKED to see negative Owen, being negative...
Women's main event - was building to a good finish, and then they rushed it - feels like they ran out of time and had to do something on the fly? Was a shame, the match was building nicely and they were working the rather worn out crowd really into the match. It needed a proper clean finish, feels like they got word from the back to wrap up asap as even the celebrations were cut off the air quickly!
As for the overall show - I thought it was enjoyable for what Mania is these days - unfortunately I think the years of a good solid 4 hour wrestling show are long gone, and fair play to WWE for making sure as many of their talent as possible get a Mania payday. The first half of the show was very enjoyable, last half a bit meh

Re: Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
It is hard to evaluate as a standard wrestling show. It's something else, something entirely of its own, which is probably what WWE intend. It's like a carnival. There were lots of things to look back on as memories of it and enjoy, I suppose, but forgettable in the sense of real quality.
It's quite a bit like WWE these days, really. Their video packages for feuds do this thing where you can watch them and think that something good had been before it. They take all the best bits, all the stuff that were just moments, and roll them together to add up to something that looks good. If you did a video package of this Mania, it could come out looking fun. But those of us who watched all of the footage, all of the stuff that would hit the cutting room floor, we see that it wasn't as polished.
If you pick out the highlights, it all seems good.

Im thinking of watching it but I have been too out of the loop in WWE to know a lot about the storylines.
Is it worth buying for match content?

Re: Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
I’ve had a few hours sleep and a bit of time to reflect on it. Overall it was a very good show with little negatives. Its hard to say any match was bad even if the match quality didnt match the NXT card.
The trifecta of Rollins, Kofi and Becky winning is a huge plus. The SmackDown tag title match was very good, even Batista vs HHH was good if you can laugh at it.
I think in the near future people will tend to forget about it, but in a few years time I can see this Mania finding itself in the top third of ‘best Mania ever’ lists.

Re: Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
Going through the matches and trying to review them/remember what happened. I'm just going to post what I can remember happened, without looking it up. This might just be an example of how poor my memory is or how nonsense the show was. Maybe both, it was 7 and a half hours.
Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal
Most people didn't get an entrance, but the SNL guys did, then Braun did. The SNL guys hid under the ring. Luke Harper was there and did have a stare down with Braun. People liked both those things. The Hardys got an entrance too, it felt like the music was going for ages.
Almas did some good stuff, Roode went early, one of Heavy Machinery did the caterpillar. Think Crews might have stuck around a while. Owens was not there. Rhyno looked tubby. Braun was fighting two guys on the ropes near the end, the SNL guys came back in to eliminate him from behind. It was clever, cos it was what people were worried about them doing, but they teased it well enough before Braun was too strong, eliminated the people who were being a nuisance before, confronted the SNL guys, slapped one and chucked out another. Kalisto was there at one point.
Women's Battle Royal
Asuka and Naomi got entrances, Naomi's entrance is rubbish in broad daylight. The Riott squad did well for a bit, Ember had a good spell, Kairi Sane got some real focus and looked excellent, as she always does. Naomi didn't do an athletic escape spot, Lana kicked someone. Mandy and Sonya worked together. It looked like Sarah Logan had won after eliminating, I'm gonna say Asuka, but as she celebrated, Carmella got back into the ring. I didn't know she'd been hiding. She chucked out Logan and we got a winner who does not deserve the continued success they give her.
Buddy Murphy (c) vs Tony Nese
Tony Nese has abs. These two went at it, but it was early in the pre-show so the crowd were poor and I was tired. There were plenty of moves and jumps around, but Nese won. Murphy has been a real success in 205. Nese interests me much less.
The Revival (c) vs Ryder & Hawkins
You can't trust wrestling fans. There's a lot of whining about the tag titles not being shown respect, the Revival not being showcased properly. But then wrestling fans also wanted a match with no build to be won by a tag team with no wins because Hawkins had a funny streak where he lost 200+ matches in a row. The match itself was fine, I remember thinking it was fine, but Hawkins sneaked a pin for the win. People were happy, I was not.
Actual WrestleMania
Brock Lesnar (c) vs Seth Rollins
I think this was first, after Hogan came out with Bliss (maybe?). Heyman forced his way out and said that if Lesnar wasn't on last, then they were getting this done early before going to Vegas where he is "ultimately" respected, or similar.
When Rollins came down, Lesnar attacked him before the start. Threw him around, battered him. Eventually, they began and Rollins was hurt. Germans happened, then Seth knocked Lesnar into the ref, got a low blow on him that wasn't seen, hit at least two Stomps, pinned him. It was done far too quick for a title match and made me happy for no more Lesnar. Rollins did the spinny title thing at the top of the ramp.
The Usos (c) vs Black & Ricochet vs The Bar vs Nakamura & Rusev
From here out, I'm pretty much guessing the order. There was a really good 7 person suplex spot, Ricochet and Black were good throughout, a lot of it felt choreographed and like your standard 4-team Mania tag where they want it hyped and fast. Rusev and Shinsuke were out of place and would have been better in the Andre.
There's a Ricochet/Cesaro moment where they defy gravity and reminds the talent of both.
I know Ricochet and Black were protected so that they looked good, got their spots and didn't look beaten, the Usos did a double splash on a person to win. They didn't do too much Usos/Blackochet interaction, so that could be a feud, but I hope Ricochet is in a MITB match.
Boss n Hug (C) vs Iconics vs Nia & Tamina vs Beth Phoenix & Natalya
Paige was on commentary and was not a wrestling commentator, more just a young woman. It wasn't enjoyable to listen to her respect everyone and love Nia.
Bret came to the entrance ramp with Natalya and Beth, but no one tackled him so he left.
At one point, Nia and Tamina teased twin splashes from the top rope and Renee said that Nia would have gone through the ring if she'd landed it, which probably didn't sound how it was intended to sound.
Beth looked physically able but not more than that, suggesting she could probably still go if she was full-time, but that she isn't. Natalya did a double sharpshooter.
Someone did a finisher to a woman, and one of the Iconics had tagged in just before. The other Iconic threw the aggressor out of the ring and her partner capitalised on it to win. It was Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiconic. They're fun, and their character will probably make the title belts interesting, but I already struggle to see them 1) having good matches 2) keeping those titles relevant with that roster.
AJ Styles vs Randy Orton
This one didn't leave a mark. I like Orton, but criticism about him is warranted. He is just a bit stale. There were some fun moments, they did the spot where AJ goes for the forearm and Orton looks to RKO but just jumps up and falls back cos Styles fakes it. AJ kicked out of an RKO and The King, on commentary because, was flabbergasted and almost stopped making jokes about Orton's father disliking his own son.
AJ did a good Forearm to the outside, and then won the match in the ring after another one.
The Miz vs Shane McMahon
This one was a real Shane O'Match, not sticking to the ring and finding ways to make people worry he'd be hurt. At one point, the Miz's Dad came in the ring to fight Shane cos his son was hurting. He put his hands up to fight and Shane was a very good heel throughout. He helped him adjust his stance cos his hands were too low, then looked like he wouldn't fight him, before a cheap shot.
Miz then flew back to life to attack Shane for killing his Dad. They wrestled into the crowd, the scenery, Miz dominated and took Shane up a climbing thing. It was pretty high, and Miz suplexed Shane off into a mix of stuff below after Shane had begged for mercy. However, the Best in the World was cunning, resting himself on top of Miz slightly when they fell, and the ref counted the 1, 2, 3. Probably delivered what was expected, really.
Daniel Bryan (c) vs Kofi Kingston
This was match of the night, and the one match the crowd went wild for (although a lot were there for seven and a half hours, so fair play to them). I really liked it, good psychology, good story, paced well. Not too clean, which annoyed some, but the mild errors weren't really botches and still looked like moves. Bryan wrestles a realistic style and the only problem with him not winning is that he isn't running the show any longer. He has been fantastic since the turn, even if I (wrongly) didn't like the heel move to begin with.
There was good submissions, locking up, striking and stuff outside the ring. Kofi got to grow into it and show no quit was in him, whilst the New Day and Rowan outside were only a minor physical factor once and were used well.
The finish had Kofi use Bryan's stomp move on him then hit the Trouble in Paradise as he stood. He'd got out of multiple submissions, survived a flying knee and was altogether resilient and passionate in the way that has made him so popular lately.
The genuine tears from Xavier were excellent, and then the celebrations in the ring with his kids were pure gold. It was perfect in its ending, Kofi's older lad very confident to gesture to the fans.
Samoa Joe (c) vs Rey Mysterio
Rey's injury was clear. He hit a 619, Joe got away, Rey jumped from the turnbuckle and either looked hurt or Joe scouted it, locked him in the chokehold and won. Few minutes at most.
Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre
Reigns got mild boos and mild cheers from people who weren't passionate enough about either feeling to do it with gusto. Possibly blame the fact that Kofi drained the last energy out of the crowd and the match was obviously unimportant.
It was a Reigns Raw match, he won with one spear and the cancer survivor didn't lose, basically.
Triple H vs Batista
First, the entrances were nonsense and awful. Batista looked a bit coked up, probably feeding off the adrenaline of one last Mania match he was given that he wanted.
HHH appeared to be driven down to the ring by William Shatner dressed as Joaquin Phoenix's joker in a Mad Max inspired car. No Stephanie in leather, for fans of that sort of thing.
Weird, faux violence at the start gave it a sense of intensity, but it was a match where two men who are not at the peak of their powers, with one who was never a master of the art, doing things that stood out rather than made a match. The nose ring being pulled out was comically bad.
Give Batista his credit, he took some real painful looking bumps, especially the chain whip at the start, the table bump and the stairs bump. It was kinda messy, but entertaining enough whilst it was on. Not something you'd search out (House - you won't enjoy it) and then Flair came out and slid in a sledgehammer when HHH was down and Batista had the advantage. The shouting interaction between Batista and Flair was good, then HHH hit a Superman sledgehammer shot.
Kurt Angle vs Baron Corbin
A painfully bad match with no vignette build for Kurt's farewell. Kurt controlled it, but he went for a moonsault when he could have finished it off. It missed, Corbin finished him, the win went down very flat. Angle went out putting over a younger talent, which once it happened, suddenly felt obvious. He got in his spots, he got some You Suck chants, he got a farewell that wasn't quite befitting his overall talent.
It was all the more disappointing cos people were hoping for something more. Cena had come back as the Doctor of Thuganomics to interrupt a fun Elias segment, doing a rap with rude words and ideas. The segment was good though, look it up, word life.
Bobby Lashley (c) vs Finn Balor
Lashley had contact lenses in and looked like a bizarre Cat Animorph. Balor was the Demon, because Lesnar is nothing compared to a man he's beat multiple times.
There was a good spot where Lashley speared Balor off the apron, through the ropes. Balor powerbombed Lashley. The Demon was too much and surprisingly picked up a win in a match as the Demon.
Ronda Rousey (c, RAW) vs Charlotte (c, Smackdown) vs Becky Lynch
The crowd was struggling, maybe further bored by Joan Jett playing for Rousey and Charlotte arriving in a weird helicopter vignette. Becky came out to a quieter reaction than I expected.
They did get drawn into it and louder as they women worked hard. It was a messy triple threat, probably further proving why it should have been one on one, but Rousey again took some nasty bumps and showed she isn't some primadonna who has had her success and now wants it easy. Loved the bit where she said Charlotte chopped like a b*tch, so Charlotte chopped her face. Charlotte was otherwise an unnecessary distraction, only there so they had a Flair in the first female main event of Mania.
I don't think they delivered as well as they could have, but that might be cos the finish was so sudden. The pacing was fine if the match had a five minute finish build, but it didn't. Becky was being beaten by Rousey but countered into a backslide-type pin and stole a win that Rousey feels she got her shoulder up from.
Celebrations were short, but Becky Two Belts got the right result.
Alexa Bliss was an awful host, the pre-show had too much Coach and Sam Roberts, Hall and Nash did a small skit, Ron Simmons appeared, the hall of fame bit was just DX showing off (I enjoyed it as much now as I did when HBK and HHH originally did it - not much) and most of the right results were made, even if finishes weren't perfect. It was entertaining, nothing was awful, but it's too long and equally, very little was great.
I'd recommend the Kofi match, the main event, maybe the Usos tag and a bit of Miz Shane if you liked Shane's old matches, but want a watered-down, 2019 version. It was fun, but it was the carnival of WrestleMania rather than a wrestling show. The Kofi win will live with people a long time and the crowd were brilliant for it, but they just don't do it the way they used to; it isn't a festival of their peak wrestling matchups. There's no Savage/Steamboat, Taker/Shawn, or other classics, they don't do it for that nowadays.

Oh yes Oily because everyone else who watched it thought it was good.
There was a running poll during the event on Twitter ranking each match ...not one had less than 400k votes...as a whole the event averaged a poor rating. Clearly I wasn't the only one unimpressed.
As Samo and Dolph said there were good moments last night however given the length of the show and the overall quality they just got lost in their which is a real shame for the likes of Kofi and Becky.
Length obviously plays a huge factor but I also think match placement and booking is still the main crux of keeping a crowd going. I thought that actually having Rollins\Kofi\Becky win was overkill last night...in fact babyface overkill happened by time we even got to Becky winning and I think that played a part in them.being dead. It's great seeing the good guys win but when it keeps happening the pay off isn t the same for all of them. Sadly it was Becky whose shining moment was ..well not quite so shining.
As I said last night, all three women deserves massive plaudits for their performances and ability to get the crowd back to life and for sure they deserved much better than the ending they got! I'm not sure it was called on the fly...think that was the ending...controversial finish gives Rousey the protection while.taking a loss and something to go at the feud with Becky with when she returns.
Kofimania was the moment of the night and was done absolutely brilliantly. The match told the story ..the pacing was spot on and the final crescendo was everything it should have been.
Like Samo the absurdity of Batista vs HHH managed to hold my interest ...it shouldn't have as it was all rather a bit daft but it worked. Wasn't keen on the finish but that was more just due to my feelings on old school.booking for babyfaces in feuds. We had seen Rollins use the low blow earlier...didnt.need to see another babyface shortcut their way to victory.
As for the rest;
Rollins vs Lesnar - Huge disappointment and just screamed lazy and lacking any story drive. The problem with the whole feud in general truth be told. Massively forgettable and given the 3 years that has preceded it ...going over Lesnar at Mania for the title should never have been made to be entirely forgettable
Miz vs Shane - Loved seeing this side of Miz. Match was done very well and kudos for Shane...Mr Bump does it again. The ending made sense in keeping Shane and his moniker in tact moving forward but giving Miz the real victory in the way he got his hands on Shane after everything
Tag Title match - Smackdowns one was fantastic. Four teams all delivering excellent performances on the grandest stage. Fast and furious hot tags...great spots...high flying ...testament to how you can make 4 way tags entertaining and yet simple. The Usos may very well be most underappreciated performers in the WWE
Raw One - Completely the opposite..absolutely awful...wrong winners (no one cares about Zack or about Curts losing streak) and the unthinkable happens and they manage to lose what little prestige is left of the Raw Tag Titles.
intercontinental Title - Was an ok match ...but nothing we haven't seen before from the two of them bar the ending and as I said last night ...booking wise why doesn't Finn turn up as the demon all the time if that's the advantages he gains?! Was a forgettable feud that went on to long and last night was forgettable too. (hope to go dont continue it tonight on RAW)
Kurts Last Match - Didn't get it at all. The crowd didn't want it....by all accounts Kurt himself didn't want it. And they went and chose that match to have the heel go over. To be fair, Samo and Dolph were spot on about it being the rub we need to see youngsters get to move on and be potential future stars. However Corbin has never been remotely portrayed that way so we all know nothing is coming off this...and because of that Kurt shouldn't have and didn't need to lie down for him
Women's Battle Royale - Forgettable
Andre Giant - Went on too long and the need to shoehorn celebrity into Mania matches rears its ugly head again.I
Elias Concert - Enjoyed the nostalgic moment for what it was but feel sorry for Elias...can't seem to have his Mania moment not for want of trying mind. I do hope he gets a chance to respond tonight because essentially he had the floor wiped with him last night.
Same Joe - Made to look like a boss ....hope he gets a huge push!
The Alexa Bliss hosting didn't work at all. Felt like a way to get her on the show and nothing more than that. didn't enjoy a single moment she presented...even the crowd just muttered when she brought Hogan out. No more Wrestlemania hosts please ....it worked with The Rock because it's The Rock ..we don't need it every year now
All in all half of the card was good to very good....unfortunately the other half was entirely forgettable and I think they got some of the match placements and winners wrong and for me it had a huge knock on affect for the moments that should have been crowning mania moments and it made an already too long show feel just entirely far too long.

The Lesnar thing is the best they could've done, they don't want Rollins to be the guy who finally beats Lesnar clean and they get the belt off Lesnar finally.

Why does Elias need to get anything? He had a big moment solo and was part of a memorable moment.

I didn't mean that type of moment per se...agree he was part of memorable moment but he was the after thought to it...it was about Cena...not Elias ...and his concerts have been interrupted so often now that last night the anticipation wasn't the Elias part but rather who would interupt.
It's easy to forget that he has been booked pretty poor from a looking strong standpoint yet he has maintained an act for over a year now without it getting too stale and while still keeping a good strong reception from the crowd.

7 hours for a show is just too long to keep everyone engaged.
If they are doing the whole brand split then have a raw WM and a smackdown WM over two nights.
If Smackdown can't complete then mix them up but still have things over two nights.
It's that or get rid of the matches where there's no championship. I just dont see the need to have Angle vs Corbin or HHH vs Dave

Two manias cannot work.
7 hours is ridiculous, I think the pre show is just going to become ignored. But it’s not a wrestling show, it’s a show with wrestling

Not sure I agree it cant work, but Saturday probably has to be shorter so it incorporates the HoF show

It’ll just be WrestleMania lite.
They could easily eliminate an hour of the pre-show, but I think they do an hour on a network and monetise it.
Weirdly, every PPV they do has lulls. They have to manage crowds energy every single one. Maybe it’s the quality, not the quantity

Depends how its booked and portrayed. If you stick all the tag team and battle royales on one show then yeah. Could have Kofi vs Bryan main event on Saturday though

Re: Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
The best solution is just accept that quality should take precedent over quantity and not everyone gets a Mania match.
Scrap Takeover on the Friday and put the HoF there. Mania night 1 on Saturday, Mania night 2 on Sunday. If Night 1 had ended with Kofi winning it would have been an awesome way to end a show, then night 2 the crowd are rejuvinated enough that the main event will get the reaction it needs. It was very telling that the very second after the last bell rang people where flying out the arena. No one waited around for the post-match celebrations they just wanted out of there. 7&1/2 hours in inexcusable.
Takeover will sell out anywhere, any time, no need to tie it to the big 4 PPV's anymore. And I dont think the 'every PPV has luls' argument is sound in this case, and its not like theres one or two matches in the middle that are a bit slow, it was the entire second half of the show. Thats not a lul, thats a sheer drop that they never recovered from.

I think it shows that there’s something fundamentally wrong with the product though. It’s on a different scale, but it’s still happening in 4 hours, so it’s definitely gonna be magnified on 7.
And you can’t take Takeover away from that weekend, for some fans it’s the best part. You’re ignoring their experience to add a double WrestleMania. Just have it five hours, don’t have everything on there. Or don’t have so many titles: do we need two women’s champs, two tag divisions? Do we need hosts and skits?
Again, we’re debating something without the real perspective. We want a wrestling show, the McMahons don’t

No reason you can’t have 4 nights of mania, have the HOF on Thursday, Takeover Friday & Mania at the weekend
Takes even more of the market share from the tag on shows

I don't mind the skits and the bits and bibs that go along with the product. The issue is simply 7 hours is too long.
If WWE really want there to be two brands then keep them seperate. Have a Raw mania of 3.5 hours long and a Smackdown Mania of the same length. One on Sat nightm one on Sunday night.
It's that or you get rid of the brand split thing and jsut have WWE again. Still have two shows, but reduce the number of superstars.

Re: Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
Its not just the skits though, it’s meant to be grand and long and like nothing else in the business.
You might lose viewers and audience for a Thursday night too. Plus it makes the HOF seem far less important, which it doesn’t deserve, even if it’s true.
I think we’re also ignoring that with the Network, missing Mania and the change in PPV model pay has made an impact.
I’d still get rid of brand specific tag titles and women’s belts. They can have separate divisions that meet at PPVs, occasional crossovers and build feuds within the show that lead them to a chance at the titles.

Re: Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
You need to factor in the cost to the consumer in this. What about the people who don't have access to the Network? Who pay for PPV's in the normal way, will they fork out for it twice? What about attendance numbers? Is it a festival? Do you sell weekend tickets?
It just doesn't work as a business model.
Simple thing is to focus on the main titles and storylines. If people haven't done enough during the year to gain a slot on the show, then tough. From this years card...
Didn't need Balor vs. Lashley again.
Didn't need Raw Tag Team match.
Didn't need Cruiserweight title match.
Didn't need the Women's Battle Royale.
Didn't really need the Bliss segments.
An easier way to do some of this, would be to scrap the MITB PPV and do it at Mania.
Have a card that has...
ATGMBR - For all the people who didn't make the card.
Both Tag Titles (Mens)_
MITB - Womens and Mens
Intercontinental
US
WWE Universal
WWE Womans
WWE Title
10 matches.

Re: Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
If you have 2 mens titles (universal and WWE) then you need 2 woamns titles as the whole of last year has been a push for womans wrestling to get more equality in rleaton to the mens locker room.
That being said, absolutely no need for the MITB matches
So I'd have
ATGMBR - For all the people who didn't make the card. - 40 min match?
Both Tag Titles (Mens)_ - 15 mins each?
Womans tag match - 10 mins?
Intercontinental - 10 mins?
US - 15 mins?
WWE Universal - 40 mins?
WWE Raw Womans - 30 mins?
WWE SD Womans - 30 mins?
WWE Title - 30 mins?
With build ups and breaks and daft wee bits and bobs between matches we're looking at 300 mins of a show or 5 hours. Surely thats good enough for Mania???
I still say you can have a Raw and SD mania on different nights over the weekend. Some people only watch one or the other brand. If you do watch both then go to both shows. If you cant afford it, only go to the one you want to. There will always be another family who could take the other night's ticket if yours can't make it! Or in dream land, if you buy one ticket, you get the other free if you want it? WWE makes plenty money already!

40 minute Andre? Jesus! It means so little that Baron Corbin didn’t even list in in his achievements. It’s a 20 minute warm up act.

I don’t agree having two women’s belts is equality, anyway. Equality’s booking legitimate feuds and using the division properly, rather than being forced to do “something” cos there’s a second belt. The division is too thin and tag plus two world titles is harming it.

I’d go further and get rid of it cos no one really cares, but if you’re doing a pre show, it kinda works.
I also think they should save a couple matches for Raw and Smackdown, where the crowds are hot as hell and want meaningful matches, rather than putting them on at Mania where they’re rushed and to a crowd that could do with a rest.

Re: Official WrestleMania 35 discussion thread. - Will contain spoilers.
I think the problem with the Battle Royals is that they've never been presented as anything other than a tool to get more people on the card. It means that little that they havent even put it in Baron Corbins list of achievements they rhyme off as he makes his entrance. They're putting MITB next up on the calendar, so they could easily have said the winner of each BR automatically gets a spot in next months MITB matches. Its not much but its atleast something.
I dont think the womens division is too thin for two belts, problem is they've put 3 of their biggest stars in one match for both belts, put the tag belts on two of their other big stars and made the other the host. So theres 7 of your 8 biggest women stars tied up. They also havent done enough to legitimise anyone else in the division. Theres more than enough in the division to merit two belts but they arent really booking them properly. Once Becky and Charlotte got involved in the RAW title, there was no one really credible left on SmackDown to challenge Asuka at short notice. All boils down to booking for me, not lack of talent.
