WBC continues to corrupt boxing... Empty WBC continues to corrupt boxing...

Post by Nathaniel Jacobs Fri 28 Jun 2019, 2:21 pm

So WBC has announced yet another new title 'franchise champion, bestowed upon Saul Alvarez. Rather bizarrely a 'franchise champion' doesn't hold a WBC title and naturally has no mandatory bouts.

Jermall Charlo, whom was WBC mandatory for 14 months, has been promoted to full champion. Charlo not entirely impressed by being taken out of the Alvarez sweepstakes.

ESPN, Dan Rafael wrote: Canelo ... now WBC 'franchise champ'
The WBC announced on Wednesday that Alvarez has been reclassified as the organization's "franchise champion" and that interim titleholder Jermall Charlo has been elevated to being its full world titleholder ...

In announcing the move, the WBC said that it created the "franchise champion" tag during its recent midyear meetings in Honolulu ...

"The franchise champion is a special designation and status which the WBC may bestow to a current WBC world champion, who is also Canelo Alvarez an elite boxer and who has achieved and maintains the highest of statures in the sport," the WBC said in its explanation.

... A franchise champion shall enjoy special status with respect to his or her mandatory obligations, holding multiple titles and competing for titles of other organizations, as the WBC board of governors rules on a case-by-case basis ... The WBC is bestowing that honor upon champion Alvarez due to his many accomplishments, which have positioned him as major worldwide attraction in boxing, and in light of his unquestionable boxing career linked to our organization."

The WBC said the designation was made via mutual agreement between the WBC, Alvarez and Golden Boy Promotions ...

"We're very happy and glad that Canelo is being recognized," Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez told ESPN on Thursday. "We think it's an honor for Canelo to be elevated to franchise champion ... "

The WBC said part of the designation requires Alvarez, or any franchise champion -- Alvarez is the only one at this point -- to "participate in a minimum of two social responsibility events every year, organized and in conjunction with the WBC.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman told ESPN on Thursday that the WBC is "trying to provide an avenue to enhance boxing and to grow the industry. We are making a rule, a status, to bring clarity, not to confuse."  ...

I don't hate Canelo himself, but I seriously dislike anything that his team have to do with influence on boxing. We've had "Canelo weight", a 6-month ban for doping and then straight in to a World Title Fight, we get his team insisting that he fights in certain places, the whole set up stinks. And now this. You've been stripped of our belt. We've given it to the WBC No 1 contender. So have this "Special One" because you're amazing and we love you.

What a massive pile of BS.

As someone that used to follow boxing far more I always defended the WBO and IBF against accusations of them having lesser status in the sport than the original two governing bodies.

However, the  WBC and WBA now seem to be less meaningful than the two more recent organisations.

The WBA continue with their appalling Super/Regular champions.  Firstly a Champion is "super" by definition and so the use of the word "super" is extraneous. Likewise there should be nothing "regular" about a world champion and so the term "regular" is a misnomer to describe a champion of the world.

Put simply the WBA say that there are "two" world champions and therefore two number 1s which is plainly idiotic.

The WBC with their diamond, gold, silver, platinum, aluminium, tinfoil etc... belts and trinkets make their organisation un utter farce.

Until people stop buying in to it, the proliferation of meaningless belts, titles and honours will continue.
