SURREY VS SUSSEX/ ESSEX T20 VITALITY BLAST
SURREY HAVE NAMED A SQUAD OF 13 TO TRAVEL TO HOVE TO FACE SUSSEX IN OUR OPENING VITALITY BLAST MATCH OF THE 2020 CAMPAIGN.
Gareth Batty will lead the side in Jade Dernbach’s absence. The T20 skipper has sustained a groin injury in training and is unavailable for selection.
Elsewhere, Club captain Rory Burns could be in line for his first Surrey appearance of 2020 after returning from England Test match duty.
Gus Atkinson, Daniel Moriarty & James Taylor will all be hoping to make their T20 debuts for the Club.
A total of 14 players are unavailable for selection for Surrey.
Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Jason Roy & Reece Topley are all preparing for England’s upcoming fixtures. It was confirmed earlier today that Roy will miss the IT20 series with Pakistan but will remain with the national squad ahead of the white-ball series with Australia.
Ollie Pope is sidelined with a shoulder injury sustained in England’s final Test with Pakistan earlier this week.
As well as Dernbach, seamers Jordan Clark (foot and ankle), Rikki Clarke (hip)Nick Kimber (knee), Morne Morkel (ankle) and Liam Plunkett (hamstring) are out of this match while Conor McKerr’s season was ended by knee surgery earlier this month.
Hashim Amla remains unavailable and Laurie Evans, who will play for Surrey in the Vitality Blast, sits this one out due to an agreement between the two clubs after the batsman’s loan was extended until the end of the season.
FULL SQUAD:
Gareth Batty (c)
Gus Atkinson
Scott Borthwick
Rory Burns
Matt Dunn
Laurie Evans
Ben Foakes
Will Jacks
Daniel Moriarty
Ryan Patel
Jamie Smith
Mark Stoneman
James Taylor
Amar Vird
Probably Moriarty and Virdi to miss out maybe Taylor, though in a way judging by that squad it should be a lot more.
Over to you chaps

Thanks, JimBob.
I was thinking Taylor and Virdi to miss out but I can't see it making much difference. Our only hope has to be the rain getting us a point. Sussex have a strong squad including Salt, Bopara, Wright, Robinson, Mills and Briggs. Meaker is also named although I doubt he'll make the cut.

Rain so far ignoring Olly's dance and staying away from Hove.
Surrey win toss and bowl. Virdi and Patel on the bench. Blast debuts for Atkinson, Taylor and Moriarty - good luck with that against some of the Sussex biffers!
As expected, Meaks misses out on selection for Sussex.

James Taylor comes on to bowl his first over of professional T20 cricket, against Phil Salt...4,6,6,4,4,4.
Ouch.

Two overs for 12 runs in the powerplay overs - Moriaty continues to show good signs at least...

Slow bowlers pulling it back, including Scott Borthwick... who'd have thunk it

After that start who would have thought Sussex would be on the ropes

We've come back well thanks to our slow men but I'm not sure Sussex are on the ropes.
If they do get back out, think it'll be up to Jacks to go for the runs. Burns and co pootling along at a run a ball won't do it.
Btw, Churchy was saying on comms that he thought Moriarty had ''something about him''. I've heard that from others too and was quite impressed when I saw him in the Middlesex friendly even though he went wicketless then.

Our best result of the season.
Match report on the Surrey website doesn't mention Taylor's over. I don't want to hang the young guy out to dry but we shouldn't pretend it didn't happen.

Laurie Evans has been added to the squad for the game against Essex tomorrow, it looks like Ryan Patel has been left out.
You would think Evans in for Taylor would be the only change.

Hi JimBob and all - a preview is now on the Club website which refers to Patel having joined the crocked list with a knee injury.
As JimBob says, Taylor looks the one most likely to drop out for Evans following his disastrous over (it went for 28!) at Hove. That still allows us bowling options although it does mean Borthwick and Jacks will need to bowl a minimum of 4 between them. They did more than ok at Hove but I feel it's only a matter of time before Borthwick is taken to the cleaners!
Essex are an experienced and canny side. Not hopeful. Not at all.

Blake Cullen has joined us on a one week loan from Middlesex and goes straight into the squad for the game against Essex today.

Even with our long injury list, seems unnecessary. Looks almost certain Cullen will play and more ''of our own'' will miss out. Cullen is only 18; this move appears to benefit him and Middlesex more than us.

Evans in for Stoneman the only change, which makes the Cullen signing even more bizarre

Yeah, it does. I would guess seamer Cullen will come in for one of Dunn, Atkinson and Taylor in the next game.

We bowled pretty well there - even Badger most of the time!
I would still make Essex favourites though. Our batting line up is ordinary with the tail starting and ending at 7! All the outfield being used as well making boundaries harder and catches more likely.
Hope I'm wrong. 3 points out of 4 would be a brilliant start compared to recent years.

Good take from Badger to get it for him. As he did at Hove, Taylor was pitching too much legside.

A lot resting on Evans now I reckon.
PS. Don Topley’s voice is irritating.

Essex should be laughing all the way back to Chelmsford!
Daft of us not to get home but predictable at the same time.
