Ken Owens secures Wales cover call
Scarlets hooker Ken Owens has been called into Wales' preliminary World Cup squad as cover for Richard Hibbard.
Ospreys hooker Hibbard will be out for between 10 to 12 weeks after undergoing shoulder surgery and is expected to miss Wales' three World Cup warm-ups.
It means that Owens, 24, could get the chance to impress Wales coach Warren Gatland in their August internationals against England (twice) and Argentina.
Prop Gethin Jenkins is back in full training after toe surgery in January.
The Cardiff Blues loose-head, who has not played since 7 January, was joined by Exeter-bound tight-head prop Craig Mitchell in training as Wales began their conditioning programme ahead of September's Rugby World Cup.
Mitchell has been out since dislocating his shoulder in Wales' Six Nations win over Ireland in March so the return of Mitchell and Jenkins coupled with Owens' call-up has bolstered Gatland's Wales front row options.
Wales' record try-scorer Shane Williams and fellow wing Leigh Halfpenny are also expected to be back at full fitness when the Welsh squad fly out to Poland on 2 July for their first summer training camp.
Ospreys star Williams, who has scored 53 tries in 79 Wales internationals, has been out with a knee injury since March while Halfpenny continues his rehabilitation after a foot operation.
"Shane will be three more weeks before he is fully integrated into the training programme," said Prav Mathema, Welsh Rugby Union national medical performance manager.
"Which means he should be up to speed by the time we go on that first camp in Poland.
"Leigh is doing well after a successful operation on his foot, he is six weeks down the line now and able to start lifting weights again and also hopes to be at Spala.
"Both Gethin and Craig are back in full training and Richard has been given a return to play time of 10 to 12 weeks, which makes it possible for him to be back to fitness by the end of August."
Wales begin their World Cup campaign in New Zealand against defending champions South Africa on 11 September.
But Gatland's men face England at Twickenham on 6 August, host England in Cardiff on 13 August and welcome Argentina to the Millennium Stadium on 20 August as part of Wales' World Cup preparation.
The Wales coach's final World Cup squad selection will be announced on 22 August with the squad due to fly out to New Zealand on 31 August.

Chuffed for Ken but it's a bit of a surprise! He's only played about 15 mins of rugby since the new year after he had to have a neck operation...and that was at flanker!
At least now we sort of understand why Bennett's been included if Hibbard is a doubt. Would rather a slightly non-match fit Owens to him though!

Hmmm, Ken Owens hasnt played much this year,
I think I would have prefered TRThomas to return as he has had plenty of gametime and international experience (still he was injured at the end of the season, so...)

If we're talking about hookers with potential, it's no surprise that Ken Owens has been called up ahead of Rhys Thomas.
I doubt he'll have enough time to oust Huw Bennett, but here's hoping!

There is only one problem with this though.
He is called up to cover for Hibbard instead of Bennett. I imagine we will take 3 hookers to the WC and annoyingly so bennett will be one of them grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Great player, he should move to ospreys or another region next season, he's 24 he should be starting. i hope he has a good pre world cup and get picked on the bench. bennett and hibbard are horrendous. like ree's though, i'd day he's the toughest member of the welsh team

To be fair Ken is a very good hooker, and before injury was arguably one of the top two hookers in the country, and on his day better than Smiler. That said he has been out injured for almost a full season. I can understand him being called up for cover seeing for the training squad, but I would be most suprised if he were to get on the plane when the full world cup squad depart.

There have been question that perplexed men from the dawn of time
Why are we here?
Is there a god?
Is there life on other planets?
Why do Giraffes have long necks?
And....How the flip is Huw Bennett an international rugby player?

Pleased for Ken but it does appear to be off the back of the 2009/10 season. Deserves a cap, especially as he's sat on thebenc a few times and not come on. Start praying that he can dislodge Bennet

munkian - Smiler is fit as far as I'm aware, Owens is only in as cover for Hibbard.

kiwicraving - I have a feeling that IF one of either Rees or Owens were to move it would be Rees, as IMO he would find it easier to move as Ken is a local boy. Also Smiler has built up a name now, and is older, so he could be able to pick up the bigger wage cheque else where.

So what would people's preferences of 'hookers' be then ?
Rees-Burns-Hibbard/Owens- Anyone else - Bennet ?

Re: Ken Owens secures Wales cover call
something along those lines munkian!
Personally mine would be: Rees - Hibbard - Burns - Owens*
*only because he's not played much this season, otherwise I'd put a fully fit Owens above Hibbard.

Re: Ken Owens secures Wales cover call
I'd go for Rees, Hibbard, Owens. Partly due to regional bias and partly due to concern as to Burns' ability to step up and his penalty count. I stand to be corrected on the penalty point if anyone has got stats but I just get the feeling he concedes a few.

Re: Ken Owens secures Wales cover call
From a selfish point of view it would be better if they took Rees, Bennett and Burns, as otherwise the Scarlets will have no hookers, fly halves or back rowers for the start of next season.
But that said if we were to take our best three hookers i would leave Bennett behind for Ken, as IMO Burns and Ken are far supperior to him in the loose, and at their worste equal to Bennett in the line

Re: Ken Owens secures Wales cover call
SS - we've got Emyr Phillips and Kirby Myhill to cover at hooker for us. Phillips played quite a lot for the Scarlets last season and really impressed me, so whilst young, I would still trust him to do a good job.

Re: Ken Owens secures Wales cover call
With the ones in the squad now my order of preference would be
Rees
Hibbard
Burns
Owens
Bennett
If injury rules Hibbard out then I would move everyone up a slot. BUT we all know Bennett will go and play probably as second choice.

Dreamer - Yeah, and to be fair we needed to go down to third, fourth and fifth choice hookers last season. Just not how you would ideally start a season. (same as we have Shingler, Edwards, and Morgan in the backrow, and Newton or Jordan Williams ar fly half).

It's amazing really, isn't it? Plenty of players divide opinion here and did on the old 606, but when it comes to Huw Bennett everyone's in agreement that he shouldn't be playing international rugby. What is it that the Welsh setup see in him that the rest of us don't?

Re: Ken Owens secures Wales cover call
Very true SS, but I think we signed an A Thomas from London Welsh to help cover at fly half too? Don't know too much about him I confess but hopefully he can do some sort of job for us. Backrow could be an issue, but we'll just have to rely on blooding some more youngsters again I guess. First two months of the season are definitely going to be interesting for us!
