Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
First topic message reminder :
Manchester United forward Bebe has agreed on a season long loan to go to Besiktas. Possibly one of the worst signings of Fergusons long and distinguished managerial career. Anyone agree?

I was actually thinking of him last night Brady and was going to add him today. It was a world record buy at the time and while he was part of Brazil's 2002 World Cup winning squad he never quite justified the billing did he.

Per Kroldrup, Udinese to Everton, £5m, June 2005
Everton paid a fortune for the Denmark central defender but then showed no interest in actually playing him amid suggestions they had suddenly discovered he couldn’t head the ball. Made one league appearance before returning to Italy.

Kleberson, Djemba Djemba, Forlan, Anderson - fat overweight spud, Smalling, all nowhere near good enough to be United players for me. Oh, and i wouldn't pay upto £20 mill for an untested defender

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
Chris Smalling? What a load of rubbish mate. He was by far our best back up to Rio & Vidic last season so saying he was a waste of money is ridiculous. He was playing non-league football only 3 years ago. After his performances last season he'd walk into a lot of decent PL teams defence.

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
Smalling is fantastic from what I've seen of him; playing well in Denmark as well. Still got a lot of years in him and for the price Man Utd got him for they purchased a good investment. Phil Jones played a good season for Blackburn in the Premier League last season, and he won't play as a defender. He'll be a holding midfielder, the same position he played at Blackburn. But he's versatile and has looked good in Denmark with Smalling as well, but he's made a few near-costly mistakes.
I think Forlan was unlucky, he just didn't adapt at all well to the English game. But look at him now.

Don't rate the kid, gotta be honest, i really don't rate him, i think he's a bag of nerves, and i think Vidic was the best CB for Utd last year. I went the game at St James', Ameobi bullied him, then Ranger done the same when he came on. How do you defend Anderson as well? and Carrick, you have ruined Carrick lol! well Utd have, he was quality for Spurs. And Phil Jones as an holding midfielder? Tiote is miles better than him in that position, and he wouldn't cost £20 million.

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
Yes Towzer, pay attention to where he actually played for Blackburn last season and performed well. Everyone knows the reason Jones cost so much is because he is under 20, English, transferred from one Premier League team to another and Blackburn knew there were several clubs after him so could bump there asking price.

Imo he's no better than Tayls when playing in defence, and in the holding midfield role protecting the back 4, i'd take Tiote everyday of the week. It's like Henderson going for £20 million who Barton bullied out the game against them the 5-1, £20 mill for him,

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
I think Fergie wants to build a more HG side and Phil Jones had at least 10 years in him, so £2m a season looks a bargain. He's still developing and learning the Premier League game so he could always improve. I think Tiote's brilliant because I watched him every week and saw how well he played, whereas I've only saw about 6 or so Phil Jones games (not including internationals) and he's looked good. This is a thread about a WASTE of money, you can't possibly judge someone as a waste of money when he hasn't been given a chance.

No I agree pal... I'll throw in another one for you Gianluigi Lentini! £13m for Torino to Milan around 92 I think then a world record & he did nothing

Bosco Balaban was 5m in 2001. Played 9 times in 2 years and never scored.
He was hopeless. One of the worst players I have ever seen.

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
Interesting thread...I cant see how any player can be deemed a waste of cash after 1 (or less than 1) season. Unless that player has been sold on by that point... this should be judged based on a player entire time at a club?
I suppose you could say "looking like a waste of money" rather than just "waste of money" but even that should be after more than 1 season.
As for free transfers not being included...do wages not count??? Paying 40k a week or whatever for someone to mess up week in week out is expensive regardless if they were free or not..

I wouldnt say Anderson has been a waste of money either, he has looked much better this season and back to the form before his injury. He is still young and is improving all the time

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
Shevchenko has to be top 3, he cost £30m and £100k per week when the manager clearly didn't want him and it was that move that created the friction with Abramovic and Mourinho, all in all it cost about £45m and they got zero return and lost the manager who was their most successful in 50 years

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
As well as Per Koldrup, we also paid £9 million for Bilyaletdinov, which is a lot of money for us to spend on a reserve player.
So far, Torres to Chelsea takes the biscuit for me though. He's been utterly useless and nothing remotely close to a £50 million striker. Daniel Sturridge really ought to be back in Chelsea colours next season up front with Drogba.

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
Arsenal fans must be able to come up with a few:
Glen Helder
Oleg Luzhny
Squilaci
Sure Wenger hasn't thrown fortunes at these players (in fact Helder was a Graham signing I think) but there's certainly been a few duds in amongst the gems....

I think most Middlesbrough fans will point to Afonso Alves.
Cost £12.7m from Herenveen and scored 10 goals in 47 games (league and cup) over 2 seasons.

A lot of time left to prove himself but it has cost Abramovich £50 million per goal for Torres in half a season, of course he may just prove us wrong though

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
to all those saying veron he was undoubtably a bad signing but biggest waste of money is unfair, he did play well sometimes and chelsea were stupid enough to come in and pay 18 mil for him meaning that the actual money lost on him wasnt that bad.
judging smalling on one game against newcastle towzer? i suggest watching some other games this season as smalling has been fantastic. he was also one of the stand out players in the under 21's along with walker

I would say the Ibrahimovic transfer to Barcelona. I do not know what Pep was thinking when paying all that money and giving Eto who was lethal the season before.

Re: Biggest waste of money EVER?!!!
For every Massimo Taibi or Bebe, there's an Eric Cantona or Javier Hernández that he's got for a steal. No one gets it right every time, but all Fergie can do is buy the player and give him the chance, it's down to the player to grasp that chance and establish himself. Considering where they were in 1986 and where they are in 2011 I think he's done a pretty good job overall!
