Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager?
Source: http://www.skysports.com/story/0,,20876_6997261,00.html
Porto president Pinta da Costa has admitted he is helpless to prevent Andre Villas-Boas leaving as reports claim Chelsea have made a move for him.
Over the weekend Inter Milan made an approach for the brilliant young tactician, who led Porto to three trophies last season, including the domestic double and the Europa League.
Inter, though, baulked at the idea of paying his €15million (£13.2m) release clause, but that would not be an issue for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich if he did move for him.
Reports from Portugal claim that is the case and that Chelsea have turned their attention to the 33-year-old, who has already served as a coach at Stamford Bridge.
Villas-Boas is a protege of former Blues chief Jose Mourinho, and worked with him at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan before embarking on his managerial career in 2009.
After one year with Academica, he was appointed Porto chief in 2010 and he has blossomed.
Villas-Boas insisted after the Europa League final win that he was committed to Porto but that resolve now looks as if it could be tested.
And Da Costa admits he cannot stand in his way: "Villas Boas has a contract and a clause of €15million.
"If someone deposits €15million into our account and he wants to go, we can not do anything because it is something that is contractually specified."
Chelsea have been locked in talks with Turkey coach Guus Hiddink about returning to the club.
The Blues have been talking with Hiddink about taking either the coach's job or the sporting director role, and should he take on the latter then there would also be, in theory, room for Villas-Boas to also come on board.
What are everyones thoughts if these rumors are true?
Quite a hefty fee for someone with very little experience at a top, top European club.

Well, it's been announced on SSN that bookies have suspended betting on Villas-Boas becoming manager of Chelski.

€15m for a manager is ridiculous.
I know nothing of the guy. But Hiddink is one of the best managers in the world - if it was a straight choice, surely they would go for him?

Re: Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager?
He broke a ridiculous amount of records last season in the Portuguese League with Porto and became the youngest manager ever to have won a European competition but like you said Hiddink has the experience of managing top clubs and I feel that he would be a much better choice.
Also, paying 15m for a manager the day after they said that if their new manager doesn't win a trophy next season he'll also be sacked. Bit of a waste of cash there no?

Re: Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager?
15m is a lot for a manager. I take it Roman may be a little more patient than he has been with others before him. If he does come I wonder whether he'll bring some Porto players with him like Mourinho did with Ferreira and Carvalho. Saying that, I've heard the players have super-high release clauses to keep big clubs away- either way I expect Falcao, Hulk and Moutinho's names all to be thrown around in the press.
Would be fantastic to see him snub Chelsea, although I'm not sure he would. This could be a great signing for Chelsea if Roman is prepared to give him time and see if he does have some brilliant ability; I don't doubt his football knowledge because one of his scout reports was leaked last month and it was so detailed.

That's the question though, will Roman have the patience? You've seen what he has been like in the past with managers much better than Villas-Boas.
I think Chelsea's best option just now is Hiddink, he is proven at the top level unlike Boas. Ok, the young guy has done hell of a well at Porto but can he mix at the top level? I think he needs to be tested in the CL before any bigger club looks into him.

He has an incredible record with Porto. It will be a surprise if they appointed him because it will be a tougher league and he'll be coaching players with bigger egos.
I think he'd do well but I'd like to see him still in charge of Porto next season to see how well he does in the Champions League.

Very ambitious move by Chelsea, this guy likes his teams to play with pace and width, he could be great for the league

The world has gone mad, England is ranked as one of the most poverty stricken countries in Europe and you guys are talking about paying £15m for a person to show people how to kick a football round a park.
Crazy.

Re: Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager?
I think that he's going to have to hit the ground running if he's to stand any chance and by that I mean winning at least the title or the Champions League at the first time of asking.
The length of the contract for any manager at Chelsea is completely irrelevant these days so he might as well be brought in on a one year rolling but no doubt Roman will throw four years at him and then be looking at a ridiculous payout should things go wrong.
I don't want to sound ageist here neither, if that makes sense with a younger guy, but I'd worry about how a 33 year old relative newbie is going to handle some of the over inflated egos in the Chelsea dressing room.
There is no doubt he's done an excellent job at Porto but this is a whole new kettle of fish in terms of football management. I was dead sure that Hiddink was in for that position so I wonder what went wrong there? Maybe he just didn't need the pressure at this stage of his life?
It's gonna be interesting!

Re: Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager?
I think the best thing any new manager could do would be getting rid of John Terry, he has far to much say at the Bridge to the point where he can undermine the manager in the dressing room and the boardroom

Re: Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager?
When I first saw the headline, I thought Chelsea had gone completely mad and had made a move for Alex McLeish.
I then realized it read Villas-Boas and not Villa's boss.

Re: Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager?
Apparently he's going to pay the £13.2 million himself!
Either he's been promised at least a couple of years no matter what with Chelsea by Roman or he is even more confident in his ability than Mourinho.

Re: Villas-Boas New Chelsea Manager?
Apparently John Terry is very chummy with him after his previous stint as a scout when Mourinho was manager. That may well mean it'll be a success - he has a lot of sway at the club.
Funny to see he is the same age as some of the older Chelsea stars!

'€15m for a manager is ridiculous.'
Of course it is, but Chelsea have (almost) single handedly created footballs ridiculous value-less status.
This fella is like a player, they want him so they'll bully their way with pound notes into getting him, it's what they've done for years, now Man City are trying to follow suit.
Rich kids and their toys......

I hope Roman gives him time to settle into the job and not sack him if he does not win a trophy in the 1st season.
