Using Holidays To Watch The Open
Ok here it goes, I'm planning on taking 2 days leave from work to Watch the open at home. I'll be up at 9 am and will watch as much as I can. Is this sad? Is this behaviour normal? Any one else planning the same or have I lost my marbles altogether? Am i watching too much golf? I love getting to the tournaments live and had an amazing time at the Ryder cup last year. This year for the Open I wont be able to make it and was planning on catching the coverage on the BBC.

You need to get a life.I enjoy watching golf but I won't go as far to skip work to watch it.I'll see the main action at the weekend and that's all that anybody cares about

Baboon, you need to get a life and realise that golf is more important than work!!

Two days off work for me as well...up early on Thursday morning for the 90 minute drive to Kent to watch it live, a few beers and an overnight stay and then watch again on Friday. Back home Friday night to watch the weekends play on TV...can't wait

Depends how important holidays are to you I guess and how much time you get to spend with your family if you have one.
I wouldn't do it but I know I can catch some at work. I actualy prefer the other majors in terms of timing ad I'd rather watch golf at night than waste a day doing it. Wouldnt call it sad though...maybe borderline.

Given the (almost) dawn to dusk uniterrupted coverage over the first two days ... absolutely! Enjoy detones.

Thanks lads looking forward to it. Usually take a break during the day to get 9 Holes too, would get cabin fever otherwise. So its 2 days totally dedicated to golf! I get a lot more Holidays then my wife so its the perfect opportunity to use them up.

Re: Using Holidays To Watch The Open
go for it, detones. if i could (own business & 2 small kids notwithstanding), i would. i was all set for the open last year at my local, st andrews and then had to go to china and missed every single minute. gutted. i'd got a couple of days on course planned and then 2 days in front of the box (wife and kids were in sweden with my wife's family).
in fact this year, we'll be into a bit of our off season, so might see if i can push my luck. good on you!

Re: Using Holidays To Watch The Open
If your couple of days holiday is without family then two days of "man time" watching the golf is more than acceptable. Just make sure that you're not still sitting in your y-fronts with beer cans and take away boxes all over the show when the wife comes home!

Isn't it worse to prefer to be at work than watch The Open, even from home?
A bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at the office, and even a day at home is better than a day at work.

Re: Using Holidays To Watch The Open
Luckily I don't need to book and use holiday - but I have developed an enjoyable routine over the past few years of sampling the life of a couch potato, getting the best bacon I can for mid morning butties, something white and chilled for the afternoon session etc etc and emerging blinking into the light sometime on Sunday evening! I will have had four weeks of very busy golf leading up to the Open and will relish the four days - especially without some members of the Sky team making a complete hash of what we are watching.

I think that first hour or so just a few players out is really good BBC coverage, sense of anticipation and so on.Hopefully there will be a few holes live via BBC website for those of us at our desks.

I'm pretty sure the whole thing is live on the iPlayer. That's certainly my plan.

Re: Using Holidays To Watch The Open
Must admit Im now watching a lot less golf than I did a year or so ago. I probably went a bit overkill on it I suppose but at the moment Im now really struggling to get drawn into it. Actually the last round of the Masters got me but thats been it really so far this year.
I also find watching links golf pretty dreary on the eye, the scenery just doesnt really engage me when I see it on TV though in real life it can.
So two days watching the Open none stop wouldnt be my cup of tea right now, in fact if it clashed with an England India test Id probably be watching more of that.

Lets face it. Golf on the tv is ok for a while. But 4 days of it? For the amount of time you're talking about?
Get up off your bedsore ridden ass and go outside with the normal people.

But that's the problem LJ - in Nam there are very few normal people Much much safer to stay in the comfort of your 4 walls with a nice mug of rosy and a warm blanket and watch Dancing Ken and the gang paint the picture...... And it's not half so bad if you introduce a porn break every so often

No need foor a porn Break when you have Hazel Irvine to look at!! Its just a shame Clare Balding does not host the golf.

Re: Using Holidays To Watch The Open
You guys are spoiled rotten - I will be watching as much as possible for 4 days, and enjoying every second. Looking forward to hurling abuse at the tv screen when Hazel or Claire Balding, or anyone frankly, interrupts with some interesting segway about rambling tracks close to the course or where to get the best sandwich!! If it was a pie I might even drive there and watch in person - but seriously how often do we get to watch this quality of wall to wall coverage of the greatest game and greatest players. BBC - just show more shots and fewer leaderboards!!!

Must admit I go from one extreme to the other. Apart from US Open I haven't watched much recently but disappointed to find there is a weather delay in Connecticut tonight. I was looking forward to watching a couple of hours tonight!

Davie - Connecticut vs R St Gs. Apples and pears - July 14th is The Open Championship. It is only possible to watch US golf or any Sky offering on record and fast fwd. The Open on the Beeb can be enjoyed at leisure - once a year. It's better than Christmas!!!

That would read much better if it was The Open on Sky - at least as far as "enjoyed at leisure" is concerned.
To bring this slightly back to topic, those of us who have to work on the Thursday and Friday get to see something on the Beeb from when we get home which is basically the tail-end of the day's coverage - with only a smattering of highlights (most years it's Tiger, this year will probably be McIlroy). If The Open was on Sky we'd have a chance to see much more of the day's play from 6pm onwards.
Sure, BBC give us coverage from something like 9am to 8pm but then to see any highlights it's usually beyond midnight.

Only if your leisure routine includes getting through the 300 cups of coffee you go and make every time they cut to an ad break or David Livingstone talking rubbish in a studio...Davie wrote:puligny wrote: The Open on the Beeb can be enjoyed at leisure - once a year. It's better than Christmas!!!

Point taken about the highlights, but given the amount of daytime airspace they set aside for it, I doubt they'd get away with reserving another couple of hours of primetime to show some edited repeats. Back when the cricket used to be on C4, Sky would show 3hr highlight packages every evening even though the live stuff was on free-to-air. Golf could really benefit from something like that.

Re: Using Holidays To Watch The Open
Beeb knocks SKY into a cocked hat everytime. Better commentators continuous coverage, simply a more enjoyable viewing experience imho.

Re: Using Holidays To Watch The Open
BBC is altogether better - they show more players, more action, the commentary team are superior etc etc. Frankly, for me, there is no comparison. I appreciate the year round coverage provided by Sky which by comparison with BBC I pay lots of money for. Sky's coverage is only ever best described as highlights - as I have just reconfirmed watching the golf from Germany.
I do understand the point about BBC highlights package being a bit skinny, but don't people record the coverage and watch later? I can only watch the Sky coverage by recording and skipping through the guff - to watch it "live" (it is usually on some level of delay as their commentary and endless leaderboards confirm) would drive me nuts!!
