Equal money for women?
How long will it be before the prize money for the WRWC will equal the RWC?
I only ask this because I'm watching a wimmins' SF at Wimbledon. They get equal money for playing as many as three sets and what sounds like a Meg Ryan moment on an audio tape loop.

When the interest generated is of equal measure.
Womens Tennis is almost as popular as the Mens.
Re: Equal money for women?
Stag,is it? According to people on the tennis boards the advertising and viewing figures are a bit behind men's tennis.

Soon as they get the same viewing figures as the men, they'll get the same pay - generate more money and you get paid more money.

For the casual fan I would have thought so. I certainly know a fair few female tennis players - and not just the good looking ones.
Re: Equal money for women?
Womens rugby is still amature.
Women in the WRFU dont even get expenses so where would the prize money come from?
Also, what is the prize money for winning the mens WC? I wasnt aware that there was any. Just perhaps a match winning bonus for players.

Sorry, that should have been the RFUW not the WRFU. And I was referring to players in the womens premiership.propdavid_london wrote:Womens rugby is still amature.Women in the WRFU dont even get expenses so where would the prize money come from? Also, what is the prize money for winning the mens WC? Re: Equal money for women?
Again the game is amateur. They do not get paid because, the market does not exist for the fan base/TV money/sponsors etc to sustain a pro game.
So regardless of what the touchy feely amongst think, it really is not financially viable to have big prize pools for women too. And lets face it, it is not like the mens game is awash with money. Our players earn good money, no question, but it isnt soccer or American sport money or anything like it. In fact, it is precisely in line with top line wages in 'professional' careers. But unlike those guys & girls, pro rugby players get 15 years max (and not all of them at top dollar) compared to maybe 20-25 years in the business real world at top dollar.
I genuinely have such enormous respect for Rugby players in this regard as they cannot retire on their saving after the longest of careers, whereas a journeyman soccer player from 10 in the premiership could live out his days in comfort with the odd corporate gig for the holidays. And a decent player could reite after a season of big money.

Re: Equal money for women?
Women's sport doesn't generate the money or interest the mens sport does, so there will never be parity in pay.
Rugby is a sport that like every other one is supposed to be played for fun, that's what women should stick to. The skill levels are comparativly appalling in womens rugby compared to mens.

The skill levels are obviously going to take time to improve Alyn, what with the lack of investment/interest in the womens game. I mean, it hasn't even been taught in schools yet (or at least where I come from) for even 10 years. It's going to take time.
I definitely don't think there should be equal money as of yet. As other;s have pointed out, the women's game is still amateur, tis practically impossible to compare.

Weird comparison to make tbh. Women's Tennis is far more high profile than women's rugby.

Re: Equal money for women?
Its a scandal that women tennis players get paid the same as the men. They do a half days work for a full days pay. Is that really equal rights? No. It's a feminist sham.
Billie-Jean King (a personal hero of mine) sorted it. Very clever lady. Shafted them rightly.
Best deal in sport.
Forget football going the same way. Maybe in a 100 years. Most of the men in it - play like girls and get paid up to 100,000 a week. Madness. That will change. It cant be perpetuated.
As for rugby. If the Yanks get hold of it - it may happen. Womens rugby is growing as big as mens rugby, at grass-roots - in the US. Money being God there, it will have a profound effect in the years to come.

Yes but rugby is a physical sport and frankly women cant grow as big as men and cant be as strong as them. Males are simply more suited to rugby than females, it isnt sexist just common sense. Most of the market audience are males and wed rather see grown men beat each other up than women to be honest. The only way womens rugby could be as popular as mens is if all the players were super models and they played naked!

Re: Equal money for women?
Alyn doing his part for inter-gender understanding I see
Women's rugby could be a bit of a tonic to the unremitting emphasis on power that plagues the mans game to an extent. I enjoy it, but sometimes it is good to see a different style. I enjoyed the Womens World Cup there.

Re: Equal money for women?
If they want equal pay then there should only be one competition for males and females and the higher up the field you finish obviously determines how much you get paid.
If they did that then I'm sure the women would be happy with what they have now.

Re: Equal money for women?
Alyn - of course women't rugby is going to be different at men's, they've not a hope of competing in the same way physically, but that's not to say that the women's game doesn't have it's own merits. For one it's not focused on being overly physical and all about putting "hits" in. There is of course a huge room for improvement, but I think it's got a lot to offer. Highly doubt there will ever be a time when it's so popular though that it will ever warrant the female players getting equal pay to the men though.

Re: Equal money for women?
Question. Are there men-only games at the highest level? With full respect to women.
Cricket - big time. As soon as they learn how to catch a ball in one hand. (sic)
Soccer - yes. The way its going, women will be able to compete at the same level. The men are becoming more asexual. The rules are becoming like basketball - no contact sport. So there is huge scope there.
Yank games - dont care really.
GAA - yes. At football. Hurling will take more time. The ball is smaller.
Any others?

Re: Equal money for women?
Dude Gibbo - you are aware that the womens England cricket team have won everything in the game right? they're more successful than the men! The main thing lacking in the womens game at the moment is coverage. And that's an issue in all the big cricketing countries right now. There's a massive scope out there for the women's game in cricket, get India involved and they'll be laughing.

Too right Gibbo. The women should have to play best of 5 sets. For a man to win Wimbledon he could play 35 sets, a woman could play only 21, it's completely wrong.

So wrong, but they bought into it - at the very zenith of Womens Lib. Whatever that is.
I have since tried to sign Billie-Jean as my agent. Told me to phhok off.
Go girl.

Re: Equal money for women?
For those that say the impacts arent that impressive in the womens game - try saying that to Maggie Alphonsi.
Putting it into perspective, this is women playing women. The general physique/stature is smaller, but that is the same across the board! 2 women smashing into each other would equate to 2 men smashing into each other. The physicality of the game is no less than the mens.
The international teams still have their (traditional) international traits - England womens seem to have a very physical pack and a good in the set plays. France are as unpredictable as ever!
The Womens game has a lot to offer to those that genuinly enjoy watching rugby and dont have their blinkers on.
As another poster said, coverage is key. Although, there arent many full amature sports that get full live coverage from SKY for the Womens world cup, and I think there were most of the 6N games on TV.
The sport is starting to get the coverage but nothing will happen till the sport goes pro. And that isnt going to happen for a long time - there are still far too many stereotypes and prejudices for the sport to go mainstreem and really get the numbers to go pro.

Re: Equal money for women?
Kvitova gave it everything today. Rarely have I seen a more dignified winner.
But I'd have to agree with the Alphonsi point. She's a woman that could be competitive in the leagues.
I do like wimmins sports.
