Also, where is DAVE these days? Havent seen him on the board in a while.
First we had Lucas Matthyse go down on points in what should have been a close but clear win versus Devon Alexander in St Lois. The same night we witness Matthew Macklin put up an outstanding effort in Germany versus the hometown champ Felix Sturm only to see not one but two cards have it four rounds in the German's favour. And just this past weekend we were greeted with the worst of these judging offences, Erislandy Lara Dominating the once brilliant Paul Williams over twelve only to have some abhorrent scorecards rip it from him like a thief in the night, not even HBO’s crew could hold back their disgust. The boxing robbery has resurfaced in 2011 and it is killing an otherwise grand summer for the sport.
Boxing can be many things, it is always violent, sometimes brilliant, sometime’s not and once in a while when the moon’s align it can be spellbinding to watch. At times this sport of ours has some unsavory elements, promoters fleecing their pro’s, built up spectacles like Haye and Klitschko that turn out to be little more than a damp squib, networks refusing to invest in fighters we want to see. We can accept all this and more as part of a sport that is beautifully fractured at times because in between we get those fights, those magical fights. We have had more than a few this year. Who will forget a past it Morales going to war with the young butcher Maidana or Rios v Antillon. How many great fights has Froch given us in recent years or Marquez. Yes Pacquio v Moseley wasn’t what we hoped for, but it was an honest result that on hindsight should be expected when a current great meets a former. But robberies, robberies are a gutter sport.
Take Matthysse for example, he has now lost two contentious decisions in a row, in doing so he has shown himself to be an incredibly dangerous fighter that other fighters in the top-tier of the division may rightly fear, but with no base in the states, no belt to his name and no future at the top end of the light welter division back home in Argentina he has to suck it up and come again, perhaps being forced to fight outside of his own game plan in future fights to try and secure the KO that might be his only chance of victory versus the ‘home fighter’.
Macklin in Germany seemed to know it beforehand, Germany being the place of many hometown robberies, Ottke made his name in Germany and if it hadn’t been for questionable judging in his favour he would have retired with several losses and not the zero etched forever against his record. Macklin went hard against Sturm and however you scored it, however much you argue that Sturm’s work was cleaner or that he came back late, he did not win by four rounds, four rounds is a disgrace.
Then there is Lara
Lara v Williams is the kind of scoring that makes one question their interest in the sport, because a lie spins a lie. Lara battered Williams from pillar to post, he did so gradually and systematically against a great warrior in William’s who just doesn’t have it anymore. Williams made the real money in the fight, Williams is set to retire in a fight or two, but still the man who was not fancied beforehand gets stiffed. So now what for the Cuban who has defected from his own country for greater opportunities in the states, no one else in the division has to fight Lara, they can say ‘he just lost to Williams’ when really they might mean ‘ don’t fancy any of that.’ And then the promoters get involved and let me say this, with the exception of one maybe two promoters that come to mind all of them will do as Goosen did after Williams v Lara and defend their man, even in the certain knowledge they are lying, because that’s the sport, that’s the money talking.
Boxing is a sport that might cost the combatants involved their health or even their life, they know this and ask no sympathy, it is who they are, but when the robbery resurfaces, when a fighters whole career trajectory changes because of a despicable decision it becomes sickening. For anyone needing further evidence answer us this, where has Andriy Kotelnik been since losing an extremely debatable decision to Devon Alexander last year that would have made him a two belt world champion at 140… Nowhere…exactly.

Thanks for posting, Sean. Someone said to me years back that boxing tends to keep a pattern; one draw pops up, and so will another few in the following months. One robbery pops up, so will another few in the following months.
Looks like they were right.

Re: The reemergence of the boxing robbery
Decent article. The recent shady decisions coupled with no-shows and non-events are killing my enthusiasm for the sport of late.

Re: The reemergence of the boxing robbery
But at least the robbery gets people talking. That's one thing you can say for them.
Unfortunately they also leave a sour metallic taste in the mouth - and probably drive people away from the noble sport.

Re: The reemergence of the boxing robbery
Hey guys, i have pasted it in so anyone at work can look.
The boxing robbery certainly seems back qith avengence Chris, it is the one part of the sport i cant deal with, it really annoys me. Mainly i get annoyed because you get a fighter like Macklin give a career best performance, one he may never be able to muster again and he stiill goes down on two cards by 4 rounds??
Also take Kotelnik, he isnt a glamorous fighter or ticket seller so he gets what i conside hard done by in St Lois because everyone sees Alexander as a big fish in the division and look how he turned out. Kotelnik may never win another belt but that loss cost him two belts and a huge payday he will probably never see again
