Once again it's up to the Irish to save the day - Page 3 Empty Once again it's up to the Irish to save the day

Post by KeizoYamata Sun 17 Jul 2011, 6:15 pm

First topic message reminder :

McDowell, Rory and now Darren Clarke saved the day for the UK and Europe. What a joke the English, Scottish and Welsh players are. The Irish have now won 6 majors in a few years what have the Brits done? Nothing!!

Lets look at the English - Luke the bogus number 1 choked along with the others Westwood, Poulter, Rose e.t.c They failed miserably in their home major.
The Scottish - The worst of the bunch and complete let down despite have the most golf courses per person in the world. A complete travesty and as useless as their Football League. The Welsh a joke but still better than the Scottish as they at least had a world number 1 in Woosnam none the less a joke still.

So on home soil the Americans are still doing the business. The climb in the rankings by Europeans is down to some players managing consistent results on the pga tour and majors, which translate to higher tournament OWGR back homes.

In 5 years time I would like to bet the likes of Dustin Johnson, Kim, Fowler, Watson etc have more majors than the UK's best.

Do the rankings again, but based on per capita, or better yet, area of the country Very Happy

To quote something I saw recently.....

Dear Golf,

We like totally own you now.

Best regards,

Or you could do it by acreage of links course per country and it wouldn't look that good, only Scotland, Wales and England would do worse in the last 20 years.

You can show anything you like, if you know how to manipulate the data.

We use "like" and "totally" a lot over here too.. but with a very different accent ..usually Smile GMac is the exception that proves the rule..so he is.

Does this mean we also need to 'catch ourselves on', so we do?

Could have been Bobby on the Job, but then I thought he might be in a senior position with the Met.

Congratualtions to Darren could not happen to a nicer fellar.
3 wins in 14 months for Northern Ireland is remarkable.

In amongst the dross there is a serious point here - how is it that top/world class golfers from England/Scotland/Wales in nearly all cases have failed to translate this ability into Major wins.

Only Jacklin, Faldo and Lawrie have won majors since 1951. Given the players concerned that is a very poor return.

Westwood, Donald, Montgomerie etc etc

Someone made a comment re NI golf courses - as an FYI Tom Watson described the front nine at Royal County Down as thebest front 9 in World Golf - so maybe we do have the best course.

Geoff, you forgot about Woosnam and Lyle too. Golf not your strong point?

RCD is absurdly good. Not sure about the associated infrastructure but it's easily a good enough test for the players.

Is it always necessary to be that demeaning S_R? His point is perfectly valid IMO.

I was having a look at the rules for visitors the other day and looking at pictures of the course.

One of their stipulations is that if sandals are worn, it MUST be with socks. Very Happy

I wasn't being demeaning so apologies if it came across as such, merely pointing out that he is mistaken in his claim.
He has a valid point but I'm not sure how he could have forgotten these two, especially as Lyle won two.

Pardon me for missing a couple of flags checking on Wiki. Whistle

As others have said the point is still valid no British winner since 1999 and only 2 English winners since 1951 - that is a poor return

I played it earlier this year - it was great. Front nine the weather was calm and sunny.. and all went well. Back nine it started to blow a bit and it took me 4 big digs to get on the par 5 on the way back in. Was still wonderful to play it though

I also watched the Walker cup there - it should be a good enough course for viewing.
