How much has American decline hurt Boxing!!

First topic message reminder :

The last real golden period for American Boxing was the late 80's...early 90's.....Hagler, Leonard, Curry etc and lot's of tother American talent which transcended due to the media and omnipresent TV interest in Boxing back then.....

Boxing interest has declined over the last 15 or so years due to certain things like politics....and with the decline in American talent involved in the great game....

Sure it's good that other Countries like Britain and others are having more success but the fact is America is the home of Boxing, the biggest media machine, the place where stars are made!!! and we are insular people if truth be told....

I know we aren't the most popular people.. but for me an interested America with plenty of talent to show the World makes Boxing more interesting and raises it's profile..

How much has Americn decline hurt Boxing??? Quite a bit me thinks.

I agree with Truss boxing needs the States and the States needs superstars to keep their public hooked. Simple stuff I really don't know what everyone's problem with this is.

Paul Smith sells, Groves/DeGale packed out the O2, Khan, Haye both nearly sell out the MEN, Calzaghe had 40k+ at Millenium, Froch sells a few thousand and must have had a few thousand in Finland.

Then you see someone who got to #3 P4P like Paul Williams struggle to sell a couple of thousand tickets.

Sweet pea didn't sell either....so what...he stunk too..

I'm just commenting that even American boxers struggle to get fanbases in America, much more than British boxers do here.

Their is a opening for someone to gain a big following in the States. Problem is when the likes of Bradley, Alexander and Ward have been on the big stage they have stank the house out. Broner is the next American star imo. Would Brandon Rios be considered American?

Boxing is in bad shape in America but else where it's in the best shape its ever been

i don't think boxing 'needs' America, but it certainly benefits from it. However, as many earlier posters have alluded to, its more for economic reasons than geographic. America undoubtedly does marketing and pazazz (spelling?) better than anywhere else but Brit boxing is in rude health and the top guys sell out whole arenas without it. They're making plenty of money doing that similar to the adopted German boxers.

However it's superstars that help boxing transcend both the world of sport outside boxing and even society as a whole. The sport will never have the same breadth and depth penetration without America but it will carry on successfully without it.
