Your Ryder Cup Empty Your Ryder Cup

Post by Nay Tue 2 Aug 2011 - 22:10

I am currently watching how the 1995 Ryder Cup Was Won and it got me thinking what would my dream Ryder Cup be.

So i ask everyone else what would there Dream Ryder Cup be.

You have to pick the captains, players for both teams (they can be past or present), venue and what you think the score would be.

I look forward to seeing your suggestions.

Your Ryder Cup Empty Re: Your Ryder Cup

Post by Maverick Wed 3 Aug 2011 - 9:46

Ok lets kick this off. Firstly I was lucky enough to be at the 95 Ryder Cup as a 15 year old lad remains to this day one of my favourite golfing experiences.

Right Here goes.....

Europe:
Captain: Seve (Playing Captain)
Players:
Sir Nick Faldo
Colin Montgomerie
Luke Donald
Ian Poulter
Seve Ballasteros
Jose Maria Olazabal
Sergio Garcia
Darren Clarke
Ian Woosnam
Bernhard Langer
Lee Westwood
Tony Jacklin

US:
Captain: Paul Azinger
Players:
Fred Couples
Tom Watson
Jack Nicklaus
Arnold Palmer
Tiger Woods
Payne Stewart
Davis Love III
Corey Pavin
Steve Stricker
Curtis Strange
Tom Kite
Ben Crenshaw

The Course depends if were talking US or European based course so I'll give both:

Europe: Wentworth
US: Shinnecock

The result no idea but I reckon the states would edge it

Alliss Palmer
Jacklin Nicklaus
Faldo Watson
Ballesteros Wadkins
Olazabal Casper
Lyle Trevino
Langer Woods
Woosnam Hagen
O'Connor snr Hogan
Montgomerie Snead
Panton Stewart
Cotton Nelson

capt Eric Brown capt Gene Sarazen

Played at Muirfield

I think the USA would win easily, in spite of Eric Brown.

Let's just try a Europe Team since 1979 as I don't go back as far as George.

(Though it's tough to leave Billy Casper out of any Ryder Cup team.)

Europe:
Captain: Sir Tony Jacklin

Players:
Oosterhuis
Faldo
Ballesteros
Langer
Woosnam
Olazabal
Montgomerie
Torrance
Clarke
Westwood
Garcia
Donald
(sorry Ireland)

USA:
Captain: Azinger
Players:
Nicklaus
Trevino
Floyd
Irwin
T.Watson
L.Wadkins
L.Nelson
Kite
Pavin
Love
Lehman
Verplank

Have been to three of 'em, all in the U.S. and have a spectating record of 2 wins, 1 loss, so I'll nominate myself as spectator emeritus.

Interesting George, I had made my list without looking at the other teams and I picked Eric Brown as Captain [mainly for his extreme dislike of all things American]
I would imagine many posters would have said Eric Who. From Bathgate GC which also produced Bernard Gallacher

Team

Captain Eric Brown [non playing]

Faldo
Montgomerie
Oosterhuis
Ballesteros
O'Connor Snr
Woosnam
Olazabal
Coles
Jacklin
Alliss
Garcia
Langer

I had to force my fingers to type Alliss but he did win most of his matches in the RC against the top American players .
Eric would also have to keep 'Himself' and himself off the magic water for the duration of the match.

George
Do you know what they used to say about Eric Brown and John Panton?

If they could rip Browns head off and stick it on Pantons body it would create the worlds best golfer.

No Arnold Palmer? I think he has the highest points total in Ryder Cup history - maybe equal with Lanny Wadkins.

DTW - I've read quite a lot of stuff about Eric Brown. He really needled the Americans in every match he played against them, but especially in 1957. He beat Tommy Bolt, who subsequently threw his putter over the clubhouse at Lindrick, then smashed all of his other clubs. Someone kindly brought the putter back from the other side of the clubhouse, and gave it to Tommy, who then threw it through the clubhouse window, saying "if I'd wanted the ******* thing I'd have got it myself". There was a scuffle with the barman in the club, and the club captain too.

Whilst I don't condone stuff like this, I do think it's pretty funny when you can look back on it from 50+ years later.

I was at Dalmahoy in 1967 where they had a mini Ryder Cup match ahead of the competition [some fag company event]
Brown was drawn with an unknown Ray Floyd.
They did a little intro thing on the first tee then Renton Laidlaw, the Edinburgh Evening News golf reporter, asked Eric a 'how do you think you will get on question'.
Eric loudly replied that 'the kid had no chance against him', well within Floyd's hearing. Eric then started 333 [five under par] to go three up and Floyd looked totally gobsmacked.
Floyd won by 4/3 or 3/2 in the end.

Gallachers Senior Service was the golf tournament.
There was me and ma pal wandering around watching the golf and brylcreamed smoothy guys were handing us packets of 5 cigarettes. We were teenagers and neither of us smoked. Unprinclpled carpetbaggers, a bit like todays bankers!

Interesting what a wee form slump can do....ever so slightly surprised that nobody is having McDowell in their European side. Even more surprised at no Bobby Jones on 'tother side?

So hard to narrow either side down to 12 but here goes

Seve (playing Capt)
Faldo
Monty
Sergio
Jacklin
Ollie
Lyle
Langer
Woosie
Westwood
McDowell
Donald
Reserve Poulter

Hogan (Playing Capt)
Jones
Nicklaus
Woods
Snead
Nelson
Hagen
Stewart
Watson (T)
Trevino
Mickelson
Leonard (only so Ollie can play him in the singles)
Reserve Miller

Venue.... Carnoustie

I'd like to know whether y'all are selecting the Nelson with a good record or the Nelson with a great record . . . . . . .

Byron rather than Larry Kwini

Och so he was Doon Doh!!....Having said that, is there something specific in the Ryder Cup rules that actually forbids amateurs taking part?
