The Games of our Youth
What were those games you played for hours on end as a kid?
I had Mario World on the Nintendo and spent many happy a moment collecting coins and jumping about on those turtles.
And who remembers the first ever Grand Theft Auto (with the view from above)?
That flame thrower was brilliant!

Re: The Games of our Youth
I played Mario World religiously and rate it as the best game ever even now. I'd put finding all 96 levels ahead of the birth of my children!
All the StreetFighter games went along way into turning me into a recluse too.
Does anybody remember Yie Ar Kung Fu from the arcades? The music alone made it worth the 20p.
I am seriously contemplating buying one of them arcade cabinets with the 100+ classics built in. I think I am having one of them quarter life crisis I keep reading about! Happy days.

Re: The Games of our Youth
As a kid I remember the Mario Bros games on the NES, also Mario World on the SNES was class.
Pokemon games in primary school were awesome, god knows how many arguments they caused, just as bad as the trading cards. Super Mario Land 1&2 and the first ever Wario Land were great.
I remember getting the PS1 when I was 7, first ever game was Rayman- believe it or not it took me two months to figure out how to work the world map and move to the second stage, alright you walk there! Got the original Die Hard trilogy shortly afterward, hilarious stuff with the cheats on especially!
The Ocarina of time and majora's mask were unbelievable, true classics. The good thing about having the Nintendo Wii now is that I can get a lot of those games again on the virtual console. Good times....good times....

Re: The Games of our Youth
The first games I ever played were on the much forgotten "Intellivision", I won't include these as I've got more memorable ones on later platforms. Here's a little taste of the fast paced action though.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdHG5-K8E1E - If only I still had my Intellivision.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRtwlc_WJNM - Morrowind aint got anything on this.
As for some of the games of my youth well I'll stick more to PC games at the moment since to many otherwise.
Sensible World of Soccer I've still yet to find a football game that is so simple yet so much fun to play. Its still the best football game to be made as far as I'm concerned.
LucasArts adventure games (ANY) from the early 90's, they might have stopped doing them and went down a Star Wars only route. Yet this is what they did best and there adventure back catalog stands up and blows there SW one out the water.
System Shock 1/2 were the games that really brought cross genre to gaming, I doubt we would have Deus Ex series and I know that we wouldn't have the Bioshock games without this series.
Total Annihilation, I'll keep this short it may never get the mass market recognition Starcraft has got yet its still the better more in depth game.
Planescape Torment is a personal favourite of mine and a game I rank as the best RPG to be across any console. Yet its almost completely unknown in the mainstream market and even within its own developers game catalog it gets overlooked for games such as Baldurs Gate & Fallout. I still play it to this day every so often.

Sonic the Hedgehog on the Master System was much loved in my household. Also Donkey Kong and Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart on N64, spent hours playing them.

Re: The Games of our Youth
Can't remember the story of the game, but aliens were involved. Was like a futuristic version of Goldeneye. Same engine.
Me and my mates just used to rinse the multiplayer mode, it was very customisable.

Soccer Double for Commodore 64! I played this religously for months was one of my favourite football manager games of all time. Remember waking up putting the cassette in to load and then going to school. Getting home from school and it had just finished loading lol

Re: The Games of our Youth
Spectrum - Manic Miner, The Great Escape
Nintendo Nes - Defender of the Crown, Nintendo World Cup, Ikari Warriors, Pirates!, Punch Out!,
Arcade - Double Dragon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Crime Fighters, Street Fighter 2, WWF Wrestlefest
Amiga - Settlers, Space Crusade, Championship Manager 1993/1994, Civilization, Colonization, Theme Park, Secret of Monkey Island, Out Run
Mega Drive - Streets of Rage, Centurion Defender of Rome, Desert Strike,
Super Nintendo - Utopia, Metal Marines, Kevin Keegans Player Manager, Sim city. Super Mario Kart
PC - Master Of Orion 2, GTA Vice City, Runescape, World Of Warcraft
Gameboy - Pokemon Crystal
N64 - Resident Evil 2
I still play nearly all of these to this day on my PC. I take my lap top to work and sit there and play when I'm waiting on my lorry. Lap Top on the steering wheel, and charger in the lighter socket and I'm away for hours!
If anyone wants information on how to run these old systems on your PC for free, please drop me a message. It's easy to do and lets you relive a bit of your youth! It's not even very difficult. For the most part it isn't illegal as all of these old systems are now abandonware and only certain games you cant download due to copyright, Super Mario being an example.
